A mixed-used building by Groupwork +Amin Taha Architects, designed forcontemporary furniture retailer Aria, occupies a former bomb-site on the cornerof Upper Street and Barnsbury Terrace inIslington, London. The original buildinghad been conceived as one of two endpavilions on a parade of Victorian buildingsconsisting of ground-floor shops withtownhouses above. Aria – which had anexisting shop on Barnsbury Terrace –purchased the empty plot in 2012 and heldan invited design competition for proposalsfor the site.
AAmmiinn TTaahhaa wwrriitteess:: The choice ofconstruction and fabrication processes waskey to ensuring that this ‘restoration’ wasneither an attempt to perfectly represent orremember the past, nor part of an arguablylegitimate development of the neoclassical. After all, the almost intact adjoining terraceemploys a typically Victorian use of anarchitectural language to expediently paperover commercial necessity. Here, thePalladian-inspired centrepiece, wings andpavilions have almost no differentiation, somewhat representative of the period andits philosophy. If the ‘Must Fall’ memorial-removal movements highlight howconstructed narratives inevitably havedifferent readings from the outset (andcertainly by later generations), the structureof our proposal and its visible making, fromdrawing to completion, would need to readas a critique of the nature of narrative andmemory. In the manner of ‘denkmal’, theGerman for ‘monument’, it is an invitationto ‘think as you look upon me’.

Established in 2010 with six staff, Piercy &Company now numbers about 50, who untillast summer were spread across threedifferent studios, albeit within a fewminutes’ walk of each other. The practicenow occupies the ground floor of a formerfurniture depository in Camden, northLondon, a U-shaped space around theentrance hall and circulation core.
The broad corridor space that links thetwo arms of the ‘U’, forms both thepractice’s entrance hall and a display areafor its models. These are all made in-housein a dedicated workshop – “the messyheart of the studio”.
ST2 | 15
The existence of the workshop is a clearmanifestation of the studio’s interest indesign through making, testing anddeveloping ideas in three dimensions aswell as on screen. Models can also serve asuseful communication tools, engaging theclient in visualising the design. At present,at least two of the workshop’s three 3Dprinters are in use at any one time.
The materials library is located in anopen-plan office area along one of the arms, and comprises a floor-to ceiling, purpose-designed CNC-cut plywood piece of storagefurniture, designed and built by thepractice, with cupboards at the base, toppedby drawers and oversized pigeonholes.Larger samples are kept in other cupboards, along the entrance corridor.

ST1 | 39
The form – its walls and roof – wasconceived and built as a 1:1 hollow castmemorial with an intention to demonstratethe nature of misremembering, using an in-situ cast terracotta and concrete mix, developed with Hanson, to highlight flawsand missing elements. The initial responsefrom both structural engineer and quantitysurveyor was to specify and seek quotesfrom prefabrication suppliers. At the nextclient meeting they presented a proposal forstainless steel formwork with repetitivepanels clipped onto a steel sub-frame, allweathered and insulated with block andplasterboard interior finishes. It wascatastrophically over budget.
Fortunately we had contacted concrete andformwork suppliers beforehand with a costper cubic metre rate that remained withinbudget. Even with this it took someexplanation to demonstrate that instead ofthe standard quantity surveyor’s cost-bookapproach of splitting superstructure, internal and external wall finishes, all threewould need to be combined.
To convince the client and design team ofthe deliverability of the proposal weundertook 1:1 samples, sending a 3D modelto University College London’s robot arm torout out inexpensive expanded polystyrene, bonding that to the cheapest plywood andcasting within. Samples were provided bytwo contractors, one of which we appointed.Polystyrene routing companies normallyused by the car and film industries createdthe formwork for the contractor to bond tothe plywood and prepare on site.
