The traditional library, a warehouse of books and space, is no longer valid in an urban context. The space must be used in an efficient, but a powerful way to allow a mixture of many different activites and programs to happen simultaneously in the city. THis project aims to take the site of the old library found within the heart of CHICAGO and re-create a library that is in response to the city and its movements.

This project is a movement to re-interpret the city campus wthin the urban fabric of Chicago: How does the campus engage within the city? A study of University campuses was done to better understand how one works. By following the con-cept of many schools under one name, most campuses have this distinction between separation and whole. A similar language is found within the city as many buildings together make up the skyline. A building design was created to emphasize this separation vs. whole concept as well as to create a connection back to the city. By mirroring the typology of the skyline, the lobby becomes elevated providing many benefts as well as strengthening the idea.

Starting with a system of hexagons, a re-usable system was created which could be manipulated according to the users desire. These “Re-usables” are repeatable sequences of critical design operations that like a diagram may be adapted, evolved, or mutated in order to address a range of condi-tions similar to the ones for which they were initially intended. This system was then studied in different scales and methods in order to apply it over the facades of Chicago’s high-rise buildings. While the core and slabs of the buiding remains invaluable, the facades of the high-rise were given a “face-lift” through different interpretations of the initial system study.

The fire station was designed with the site incororated into the buid-ing. The overlay of the grid system that is repeated over Chicago, and the neighborhood, is brought into the form of the building. The design was made to emphasize the two main streets, Polk and Wester, which created the corner of the site. The circulation and structure of the building, along with the sold/void character of the third floor also creates a diagonal tension. The final building is designed to create a flow to the corner, where an open, cantilevered, space suggets the protective eye of the fire station.

Studio_Berlin Professor John ManavesSummer 2009: Berlin, Germany

Studio_Berlin is a summer workshop in collaboration with Universi-tat der Kunste (UdK) in Berlin. The final installation is the product of a 5-week course over a 3-step process located on an unused 3400m2 lot in front of an art gallery in the Tiergarten-Mitte area of Berlin. 20 UIC and UDK students initially proposed individual designs, leading to smaller groups of specific roles, then finally as an entire studio. All the previous experiments and the site pro-posal were taken into account to create the final product. The installation is compromised of a wooden truss system, using a modular system previously studied. Using a complex structural system, the geometry drastically morphs to create a complex mesh that allows for interesting, multi-faceted inner and outer surfaces. The voids in-between the structure is then utilized for sound and lighting making the installation interactive and people-friendly.
