Line Block

The line block was a spatial study focused on line. It is confined to a 12in x 12in x 12in area. The construction is made of 3/8 inch thick basswood. The drawing is an ele-vation of the line block with poche added for compositon, as well as to distinguish planes within the constuction.

Section Block

The section block is an in depth study of the section cut. The construc-tion is confined to a 12in x 12in x 12in area. The block is made of MDF. The drawing is an exploded axon of two-inch strips of the side pieces revealing a shape of the contours from inside the construction.

Balance Block

The balance block was a spatial study that focused on line, plane, and volume. It was bound by a 12 in. x 12in. x 12in size requirement and had to balance on four square inches. The balance block was the result of a series of iterations that were driven by terms such as interlocking and transparent. The final construction is made of poplar and finished with wax.

Folly

The folly was a group project that was restricted by an 4ft x 4ft x 8ft tall area. The final construction is made of MDF and pine wood. The site for the project was on the Schneider Quad on the UC campus. The draw-ing on the following page includes a section cut of the final construction along with the elevations to present the most information. The sketches are conceptual showing the process of how the design came together over the course of the project.

Coffee Table

The coffee table is five foot long, one-and-a-half foot wide, and twenty inches tall. The table is made out of birch ply-wood and oak plywood. It is painted black and stained with natural wood color.

The 7 Walls project was designed to create four spaces with seven walls. The four spaces were a place of entry, a place of study, a place of gathering, and a place of overlook. The site was a 5oft x 100ft x 50ft tall space in downtown Cincinnati. The render to the right is an ambient occlusion render done in Maya. The next image is a site plan. On the following page, the render is also ambient occlusion render of the site with the design added in. The physical model on pages 19 and 20 is made of chipboard, basswood, and plexiglass. It is 18 inches long by 9.75 inches wide and 9.75 inches tall.

Compression and Release Apertures CantileversThe use of apertures was another driving concept for the design. By using apertures, I attempted to create a visual connection throughout the whole space to make it feel bigger than it actually was. I placed an aperture in the middle of the second floor to create a somewhat skylight affect for the first floor gathering space. I also placed apertures on the second floor to visually connect the study areas.

The use of cantilevers was another driving concept for the design. Cantilevers have always been an intriguing aestheitc to me so it was something I wanted to incorporatein this design. In this case, I wanted to use cantilevered walls to serve as bench-es to make the gathering space more interesting.

The use of compression and release was a driv-ing concept for the design. By using compression and release, I tried to manipulate the senses to make the space feel more open than it actually is. I thought the best places to incorporate this idea of compression and release were in the place of entry, as diagrammed above, and in the place of overlook on the third floor.
