Tectonics: the interaction of mass, line, and plane. The simplcity of this definition reveals the great complexity of its results. The vertical extension of a plane, coupled with the horizontality of a series of lines, creates a hallway that acts as the connection zone between public and private spaces. The constriction of programmatic space, achieved with the use of tiered planes, establishes a needed contrast between areas of motion and rest.
Tectonic relationships formed the basis of the Cincinnati Culinary Institute, a builidng study focused on the inetraction of mass, line, and plane in a programmatic space. The hollow shell of an entry space leads in to a long hallway, encompassing the public restaurant space and private kitchen areas.
Ludlow Literary CenterThe Ludlow Literary Center is a study in geometric manipulation. The program called for direct relationships between the central public forum and all adjacent spaces. This is achieved with the creation of two walls. Pushed apart, the space between these walls forms the public forum, and the pushes and pulls of these two walls complete the rest of the program.
Another key aspect of the Center is the Visting Scholar, who serves as the curator of the gallery and lead researcher during his six month term. The second and third floors of the Center are reserved for his activites, with the expansive archive space flowing freely into stacks of bookshelves built into the East wall.
Much of the inspiration for the Center is taken from the work of Piet Mondrian, whose experiments with geometry result in the creation of concise spaces.

Freshman Year studio focused on spacial representation using different mediums. How do you create space using mass? How can this be represented in drawing form?
After a thorough study and documentation of the Lindner Center (the athletic center of campus, designed by Bernard Tschumi), I designed an emblematic object of the space, focusing on the vertical thrust and rhythm presented in the central bay.
The spiral represents the distribution of circulation in the space. A visitor, with the intention of experiencing the space, is directed right through the central bay; while staff members are led to the side programmatic spaces.
