Piecing Together Los Angeles - An Esther McCoy ReaderEast Of Borneo Books 2012 ISBN 9780615528236 Acqn 21168Pb 15x21cm 392pp 5ills 26.50

Esther McCoy (19041989) is one of the twentieth centurys foremost architecture historians, andone of the greatest chroniclers of the architecture of midcentury southern California. Her 1960book Five California Architects has long been acknowledged as an indispensable classic, and asReyner Banham famously observed of her, no one can write about architecture in Californiawithout acknowledging her as the mother of us all. Piecing Together Los Angeles: An EstherMcCoy Readeris the first anthology of McCoys writing. It features a selection of some 70 pieces--ranging from her 1945 article Schindler, Space Architect to Arts & Architecture: Case Study

Houses, a 1989 essay commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Fromfiction forThe New Yorkerto seminal essays on new architectural forms, McCoy charts theprogressive edge of American idealism, from the collective utopian spirit of Jazz Age GreenwichVillage, through the Depression and the war years, to the optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. Inpreparing this volume, writer and editor Susan Morgan extensively researched the McCoy papersat the Archives of American Art. Her editorial decisions were based, in part, on McCoys originalselections for an unrealized anthology solicited by W. W. Norton in 1968. Expanding on thatproject, Morgan has included essays, articles, lectures, correspondence, memoirs and shortstories that illuminate the breadth and complexity of McCoys writing and the southern Californiaregion that inspired her groundbreaking work.

    Thanks for the View Mr Mies - Lafayette Park, DetroitMetropolis Books 2012 ISBN 9781935202929 Acqn 21608Pb 17x24cm 288pp 280ills 150col 21.95

Lafayette Park, an affordable middle-class residential area in downtown Detroit, is home to thelargest collection of buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the world. Today, it isone of Detroits most racially integrated and economically stable neighborhoods, although it issurrounded by evidence of a city in financial distress. Through interviews with and essays byresidents; reproductions of archival material; and new photographs by Karin Jobst, Vasco Roma, and Corine Vermeulen, and previously unpublished photographs by documentary filmmakerJanine Debann, Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies examines the way that Lafayette Park residentsconfront and interact with this unique modernist environment. Lafayette Park has not received thelevel of international attention that other similar projects by Mies have. This may be due in part toits location in Detroit, a city whose most positive qualities are often overlooked in the media. Thisbook is a reaction against the way that iconic modernist architecture is often represented.

Whereas other writers may focus on the design intentions of the architect, authors Aubert, Cavarand Chandani seek to show the organic and idiosyncratic ways that the people who live inLafayette Park actually use the architecture and how this experience, in turn, affects theireveryday lives. While there are many publications about abandoned buildings in Detroit andabout the citys prosperous past, this book is about a remarkable part of the city as it exists today,in the twenty-first century.
