QUESTION TIME 10

DOORS AND WINDOWS 12

I recently attended 100% Designand as always was impressed by thelevel of expertise and quality ofproducts on show at Earls Court.Exhibitors, whether an art graduateor an experienced professional, hadpulled out all the stops on their

stands to showcase the very best in design. Althoughpredominantly interiors, 100% is a really interestingshow to visit because of the way in which architec-ture is used and acts as inspiration to many of thedesigners. Whether it is cleverly crafted pieces of fur-niture that utilize more industrial materials or uniquesculptures that make a stance for design, artists atthe show had gone to great lengths to give distinc-tion and definition to their pieces. Granite had beenetched into for a beautiful finish, polystyrene teacupsmade quite an impression as they were scattered

about the capital in a bid to illuminate ‘Britishness’and some of the lighting displays were truly spectac-ular, manipulating light to become more than justfunctional. After a flurry of meetings, I walked awayfrom the show inspired and excited about the nextfew issues of Architects Choice. In the following is-sues leading up to the end of the year, we will fea-ture some stunning and sustainable signage solutionsand will be featuring some of our top companies in aTop Ten spotlight.

Back to this issue and we are focusing onAddagrip and their quest as a company. See page 17for an insight into the company’s philosophy andtheir plans for the future.

There is much going on in the industry of late;with pages of news from practices and professionals;new building materials products and a look at interi-or design specifically in the kitchen. Enthusiasm for

design has not wavered as the year draws in withnew design trends emerging and the all-essentialheating and ventilation products for the season com-ing into prominence.

Our regular panelist Dickon Hayward featurestwice in this months’ issue of Architects Choice.Question Time poses the question of bringing ourbuilt environment back to nature, with Philip Richardsalso debating the qualities of the termite pavilion.Dickon is then put under the spotlight in our‘Architects profile’ seat (page 15), giving his opinionon art, architecture and his favoured buildings.

The task to upgrade the church spire at AllHallows Church, Cheadle was a relativelyunique project and one in which Sika-Trocallicensed contractor Sanderoof had to use a lit-tle lateral or even vertical thinking! The mainpart of the brief was to re-roof the churchspire in a long lasting and proven material andto match it to the existing white church cross.Sika-Trocal Type S 2mm membrane was usedon the project in a specially ordered whitecolour along with the matching SE profilewhich was welded on to the membrane. Theresult has delighted Sanderoof, the main con-tractor DJ Hughes and even the congregation.Sika-Trocal’s area technical manager ShayCasey was on hand throughout the project andat its completion to issue the final guarantee.Given the relatively unique nature of the job,the Sika-Trocal disc fitting system proved tobe a particular advantage on site, allowing fora speedy and effective fixing of the membraneto the plywood base.

Balustrades, handrails, water features and also pieces of sculptureare amongst the subjects brought to metal polishersfor this highly specialised treatment. One further areawhere the metal polishers can deploy their skills – notdirectly connected with fashions past or present – isin relation to the Disability Discrimination Act. This month’s question: Can nature translate seamlessly into the built environment?

The Termite Pavillion isa large architecturalstructure that has beendesigned around theidea of insect habitats.Built at the SouthbankCentre in London, thestructure is part of the‘Pestival’ celebratinginsects in art.

Art, as they say tran-scends so many formsof life and nature is noexception. Many of ourstructures are inspiredby nature and the natu-ral world, but usuallythese structures are lim-ited to the realms ofartistic structures suchas the Termite Pavillion.Marks Barfield archi-tects also conceived theidea of the tree-topwalk in Kew Gardensthat no doubt was in-spired by some formercreation of nature. Its issimple- the most natu-ral things inspire us tocreate bigger, more con-crete forms of what na-ture creates and whatwe can manipulate.

Can nature translateon a bigger scale intothe built environment? What ideas can wetake from the way inwhich natural materi-als form of their ownaccord and, is their agap in the architecturalmarket for more natu-ral forms of building, not just in their use ofeco credentials but interms of design.

uestiontimePHILIP RICHARDSPROJECT LEADER AT WOODSBAGOT

Nature can be translated intothe bigger scale only if thenatural principles are under-stood and fully implemented.Nature is a complex balancedsystem and if one single ele-ment of the matrix is missing, omitted or even added, thewhole equilibrium is damaged.

The translation can fall intoa number of categories; firstlythe termite pavilion is an artis-tic representation of theshapes and volumes which oc-cur naturally, represented andexpressed in timber. The Kewgardens tree top walk is astructural and aesthetic solu-tion which connects and blendsin with nature, without harm-ing its sensitive environment.

The other category and theimportant one, is the under-

standing of nature and imple-menting natures rules into thebuilt environment, followingthe basic solutions and also thesophisticated solutions. Thiscategory contains the naturalbalance and equilibriumdemonstrated in nature.

In the case of the termitemound, the important issue isto understand the function ofthe mound and how it worksand why is it the shape it is.This is a prime example of anatural structure that is built toensure a constant internal liv-ing environment in which theinhabitants can flourish, re-gardless of the variable exter-nal environment. The mounduses a natural chimney style, passive, ventilation systemcombined with a complex cap-

illary geometry which allowsthe external skin to breathe.

Using these factors, com-bined with the sophisticatedstructure the termite mound isa prime example of an ex-tremely ‘smart’ building. Thisis an excellent precedent tofollow in terms of an idealnatural solution, which hope-fully one day can be translatedand put into practice in ourbuilt environment. The amaz-ing thing is that this is just oneexample of so many other nat-ural precedents we can useand implement into our builtenvironment.

The built environmentwould benefit from theknowledge on how and whythe forms are the way theyare, and maintaining all thevariables to create a balancedstructure. Developing andmaintaining the equilibrium.

The ideal scenario is if the

built environment has build-ings which have implementedthe simple and sophisticatedlessons learned from nature, such as the termite mound, and also capturing the aes-thetic qualities and the respectfor the natural environment.

If the built environment hasjust implemented the aestheticforms of nature, such as build-ings in the shape of a bumblebee, a butterfly or a flower, then that’s a sign that we donot fully understand the truemeaning of nature and hownature really works.

There is a reason why thetermite mound is the shape itis and why a shell is shellshaped.

DICKON HAYWARDASSOCIATE AT RICHARD HYWELEVANS A AND D LTD.

The termite Pavilion is a won-derful wobbly mass of wood. Asurprising and delightful sculp-ture to lose yourself and yourthoughts in, memorable andintriguing. Its spatial unpre-dictability marks it out fromthe everyday rectilinear vocab-ulary of the built environmentand lets you instead wonderinto a fantastical world of or-ganic mystery. This is a spacefar from the scale and rhythmsof the city and it leaves youcharmed and perplexed, pon-dering how such a complexcavern could have grown outof the South Bank’s concreteembankment.

In a way it appears as a reallife solid interpretation of thekind of architecture that hasbeen increasingly prevalent inarchitecture schools since theadvent of 3D computer model-ing. Indeed, it is computer-based design andmanufacturing that allows thecreation of these complexforms – such irregularities areextremely time consuming, ifnot impossible without thebenefit of digital technology.

In a strange paradox, there-fore, it would seem that tech-nology, after a lifetime ofdiverting us from the forms ofnature is finally reconciling uswith the infinitely complexshapes of the organic world.Ever since humans left thecaves we have surrounded our-selves with symmetry, right an-gles and studied proportion. Now, with the arrival of thetermite pavilion and the tech-nology that created it, there’san opening to return to the in-trinsic primordial forms of apre-historic age.

The termite pavilion is a di-rect mimic of nature – its formis a scaled up facsimile of the

interior of a real termitemound. The termites that cre-ated it reacted to an infinitelycomplex wealth of forces thatdirected their motion and en-sured the functionality of themound. Yes, this is functional-ism, but not the brutal and re-ductive functionalism thatleads to so much boring de-sign. This instead is functional-ism that actually correspondsto the ever-changing, evercomplex reality of animal be-havior rather than reducing itto a simple formula.

What if buildings could notjust copy a termite mound but

be a human equivalent? Thatis an organic, ever-evolving in-terpretation of requisites. Anarchitecture not so much as arendering of an equivocalbrief but instead reacting tothe constant shifts, whims andemotions of the human psy-che. Buildings that do notstand upright like columnsagainst the chaotic wind ofdesire, but instead flutter po-etically in it, ever shape-shift-ing to the subtlest breeze.

It seems I’ve drifted far off-piste into the realms of sciencefiction. Maybe, but have alook at the ‘Bone Wall’ instal-

lation at Storefront for Artand Architecture by Joe Mac-donald. This work is designednot with a single human visionbut by shifting algorithms re-acting to a complex matrix ofinputs. The results may not bepractical yet, but they’re cer-tainly beautiful and show thepossibilities for a radical newapproach to design. Radical tohumans, that is. Termites havebeen doing it for years.

Since aluminium was first produced in commercial quan-tities in the 1880’s it is estimated that over 700 milliontonnes of aluminium have been produced worldwide. 75per cent of this production is still in active use today. 31per cent of all aluminium is used in construction.Bauxite, the raw material from which aluminium derives,is still being mined and smelted into new aluminium tomeet world demand. The aluminium extraction and re-fining companies have reduced their energy requirementsby almost 70 per cent since 1900. They are using a grow-ing percentage, now 50 per cent, of hydro-electric energywhich is not only an established renewable energy sourcebut also helps to reduce carbon emissions. Today justover 35 per cent of all aluminium produced comes fromrecycled material. It takes only five per cent of the initialenergy to recycle aluminium, which is almost 100 percent recyclable without loss of quality.

Today’s thermally efficient windows arepossibly the worst performing product weinstall in a building struc-ture - they lose valuableheat from the inside ofthe building. So, on thisbasis, shouldn’t we be

specifying small windows with high efficiencydouble glazing to minimise heat loss? It isentirely possible to build new structureswhich make best use of solar gain and re-newable energy sources such as wind power, photovoltaic in combination with heatpumps. These buildings can be self sustain-able or ‘Zero Carbon’ and in some instances, actually have excess energy left over. So why

are we not building structures like these nowfor all our new building requirements?Reason - most of the decision making it isdown to initial high cost - but these highcosts are now falling partially due to the currentrecession. Building Regulation’s are funnellingour design process further to encompassmore efficient designs and utilising renewableenergies such as solar heating. The UK’s fen-estration industry has to look more outwardto the changing requirements of the UK’sconstruction industry. The industry must stoptrying to place one material, or combinationof materials, as better than another and tack-le the real issue of the correct use of glazingin structures and the benefits that can beachieved. www.senioraluminium.co.uk

Dickon Hayward is our regular panelistin our monthly feature, QuestionTime. His thoughtful insights in the

the topics that we discuss always providemuch conversation and food for thought. Itis Dickon’s experience in the industry, as anAssociate Director at Richard Hywel EvansA and D Ltd that allows for hisarchitectural intelligence to shine throughin every element, whether planningstructures on giving his opinion on others.

How long have you worked for RichardHywel Evans?Six Years.

What projects are you currently working on? Resort Developments in Croatia and St Lucia, aresidential tower in East london.

What has been your biggest project forthe practice?Pegaso – a mixed use development In London N1.

Which era of art inspires you the most? And which the least?

The apogee of Gothic in the late Middle Ages. The last vestiges of eccentric mysticism beforethe renaissance began to rationaliseeverything. The least- Surrealism – Selfindulgent and puerile. It says nothing to me -just because its odd, doesn’t mean it’s clever.

Where, in your opinion, is currently themost developed and best developedcountry in terms of architecture andinnovative design? Japan – One of the few places where youngadventurous architects actually get theopportunity to build.

Can you name a building in particular that you do not like and why?Any branch of IKEA – they’re all the same. Ihate any building that makes me walk roundin large circles, trying to lull me into buyingkitchen utensils I don’t need.

What do you like and dislike aboutarchitecture in the UK? I like the enormous amount of talent, debate anddiscussion here. I dislike that all that talent seemsto have to go abroad to build anything decent.

If you could work with any other architect ina collaboration for one project, who wouldit be and what would you want to do?Robert Hooke. We’d build a monumentalcathedral to natural philosophy in the heart ofLondon, full of theatres for showing scientificdiscovery and topped by an enormousobservatory.

What are your biggest concerns whenlooking at the developments inarchitecture through the recession? That architects bid so low they’re unable to dotheir job properly and get sidelined from theprocess altogether. It’s hard to keep high standardswhen times are tough, but the profession willsuffer in the long term if we don’t. ■

By Roger CritchleyGetting a grip on the future

Roger Critchley Managing Director

Roger joined Addagrip in 1986as the Office Manger/Buyer.After three years being in-volved in most aspects of theinternal day-to-day business hewas moved into a sales rolewhere he became more fo-cused on customer relationshipbuilding and new businessgeneration. In 1998 Roger waspromoted to the position ofSales Director and was instru-mental in the significantgrowth of the company. In2004 Roger was promoted fur-ther to the position ofManaging Director.

What is Addagrip’s design philosophy?

We strive to design innovative con-temporary solutions to a myriad ofprojects. We endeavour to providea service of excellence and, wherepossible, create the desired finish tothe specification requested. Manystrange yet interesting requestshave turned out into memorableprojects. We aim to give our cus-tomers ample information to en-able them to make an informedchoice. We provide samples, whichwe believe is a key element to al-low the architect, developer orhomeowner to see the colour andtexture of our product. For majorprojects we offer an onsite visit andcan install an onsite sample area.

What is Addagrip’s history?

Addagrip Surface Treatments Ltd isa resin manufacturing and formu-lating company. Founded in 1980by Dick Cottingham, we establishedourselves as a leading industrialflooring contractor formulating arange of high quality products tomeet industry requirements. In1986 we ceased contracting in or-der to concentrate on manufactur-ing and focus on supplying ourproducts and servicing the needs ofour customers. In the mid 90’s webecame involved in the develop-ment of a hand lay anti-skid high-

way treatment. During this period, and with the experience gained, wedecided to produce a coloured resinthat could be used as a decorativefinish for driveways and patios. Thiswas the start of the Addastone®

Resin Bonded surface dressing.Over the next ten years Addastone®

became a very familiar name forboth quality and the attention todetail carried out by the network ofcontractors we had trained up overthe years. Continuous develop-ments to improve Addastone®

Resin have created, we believe, themarket leader and we are veryproud to have been involved insome of the country’s leading andprestigious projects from the TateModern to the Eden Project. Thelast five years has seen the additionof Addaset Resin Bound surfacingto complement our resin bondedfinishes.

Since the beginning, how haveyou evolved as a company towork with architects?

Working with architects allows usto produce samples to meet theirbrief, this can sometimes incorpo-rate a variety of blended aggre-gates or even the use of colouredquartz aggregates. The importanceof specifying our Addacryl Sealerfor Addastone® Resin BondedSurfacing is also a very major part, without the sealer the Addastone®

resin can slowly seep down intothe asphalt. This means that insuf-ficient resin remains on the surfaceto hold the aggregate leading to apotential failure. All part of a steeplearning curve! We are constantlylooking for new ideas and willshortly be launching the AddagripEcoPave System that provides adecorative surface with a water re-tention facility.

What is your biggest architectural project to date?

Addastone® has been used onmany major projects but two of myfavourites are the Old GreenwichNaval College and Weston Park inSheffield. Addaset has been widelyused in Schools and Universitiesthroughout the UK to surfacing theOld Spitalfield Market in London.

What are your plans for the future?

We plan to intensify product devel-opment to improve and push theboundaries further of our systems. We also plan the implementation ofmore recycled materials and SUDSbased systems. The future is im-possible to predict in the current cli-mate but we are working hard on anumber of large schemes, whichwe hope will be forthcoming overthe coming years both in the UKand overseas. ■

Sika Watertight Concrete was chosen in theconstruction of the Alan Reece Building, thenew home for the Institute for Manufacture, recently commissioned by the University ofCambridge. The new £15 million, 4,500 sq ftbuilding was designed by Arup Associates andbuilt by Keir Marriott. Incorporating the SikaWatertight Concrete system had many benefitsincluding simplified design and time saving onsite through the elimination of laborious de-tailing of tanking membranes. Importantly, ithas provided a BS 8102 Grade 4 environmentsuitable for the storage of valuable archivematerials and equipment. The BBA certifiedSika Watertight Concrete system incorporatestwo state-of-the-art powerful Sika admixtures. These work firstly by reducing the water ce-ment ratio, whilst producing a highly workableconcrete to aid placement and compaction, and secondly, by blocking the remaining capil-lary pores. The system has a successful trackrecord going back 50 years.

In these uncertain times many companies are batten-ing down the hatches and watching their expenditurewith the eyes of a hawk. But one Somerset-basedcompany has invested significantly in a major re-branding exercise in order to underpin its position asthe UK’s leading wetroom specialist.

‘Aqua-Systems’ is the fresh new face of the do-mestic wetroom division at Impey Ltd.

Ben Hollom is Impey’s Marketing Manager andco-ordinated the project. “We feel that in theseuncertain times it is important to offer our cus-tomers as much support as possible. That is whywe created Aqua-Systems – it is a complete pack-age that has been designed to help make wetroomseasier to understand, tackle any concerns and makethe systems easier for our merchants and retailersto sell. We have de-mystified the process and madethe wetroom concept easier to understand,” saysBen “and this is important for our retailers andmerchants alike. With Aqua-Systems the generalbuilder can now enter into a lucrative market thathas until now been the sole preserve of ‘specialistinstallers’ and of course this makes wetroomsmore accessible to the general consumer which isgood news for everyone”.
