Located within the DetroitMetropolitan Airport, theMcNamara Terminal at theNorthWest WorldGatewayhas transformed the current

airport into one of the nation’s premierhubs. The 2.0 million sq. ft. terminalcomplex is surrounded by six activerunways and taxiways. The TerminalBuilding consists of a terminal, con-necting link, east concourse (Con-course A-up to 135’ wide and nearlyone mile long), passenger tunnel andwest concourse (Concourses B and C).

A steel joist and king post truss sys-tem provide support for the 650,000

sq. ft. roof. This framing system createswide-open, column-free spaces that notonly facilitate passenger movementwithin the building but also enhancethe building's future flexibility. Theking post trusses form the lateral-force-resisting system, eliminating the needfor bracing and further increasing flex-ibility of the interior space. The kingpost truss roof system is continuedthrough the connecting link betweenthe Terminal Building and the EastConcourse providing a large openspace with a lively mall atmosphere.Steel framed glass walls provide natural light.

Heinz Field- horseshoe-shaped and two-tiered-seats 64,440 Steelersfans with unobstructedsightlines. Its exposed

structural steel framing is equally asimpressive as its wide-open view ofPittsburgh's three rivers and the down-town skyline. The upper tier, can-tilevering 46' over the suite and clublevels, is supported by "quad-pod" col-umn groupings consisting of four mas-sive steel HSS placed at the midpointalternating structural bays. Thesebranch-like structures essentiallyhalved the typical number of supportsused in more traditional framingschemes. They funnel the structure's

loads into A-shaped frames carrieddown through the suite and club levels.

The use of cruciform columns andfour-direction knee braces carried thissystem to the street level. Consisting ofWT18s welded to W36 members

capped at the top with knee braces,these columns eliminated costly storybracing and its corresponding erectiontime. The exposed structural steelframe has become the signature featureof the facility.

Aprogressive harbor citypoised on the Sea ofJapan, Pusan, Korea, isnow the home to a con-vention center and exhi-

bition hall composed of a prismaticglass gallery and a dramatically slopedroof. Both building elements are struc-tured in steel in this 900,000 sq. ft. flag-ship convention and exhibition facility.

The curved glass circulation spineof the convention center is a 27 frame

tri-chordal truss spanning 754'. Thetruss is generated by slicing a dough-nut-shaped "torus of revolution" thataccommodates the gallery's curved,graduated geometry. Cantilevered steelpipe columns support the truss and theexpansive glass curtainwall system.

Twenty-seven inclined bowstringtrusses span 351' to shelter an exhibi-tion space 800' in length. The resultingclear span area of 280,800 sq. ft. affordsultimate flexibility for staging exhibi-

tions of any variety. The steel wide-flange truss framework is tilted towardclerestory windows letting in both nat-ural light and views of the coastalmountains beyond.

Cascading into the glass gallery, amonumental stair gives the maritimeallusion of a glass and steel serpent.Steel plate "vertebrae" support sand-blasted glass treads while the railingsare built of glass on stainless steelbalustrades.

Situated near Dallas, TX, theStonebriar Centre offers a dy-namic public environmentwhile remaining a traditionallinear-concourse shopping

complex. Using structural steel to de-fine and highlight the major spaces, themayor of Frisco, TX, likened the com-plex to a trip to the airport or opera.Defining the central circulation path, a1,550'-long sloping and curling steelroof structure spans the entire spine ofthe complex. Constructed of tension-supported steel rod "king post" trussesresting on angled clerestory tubetrusses, the roof structure undulatesalong the spine. Secondary spaces aredefined by unique roof forms sup-ported by a variety of truss systems,such as tension ring and bicycle wheel

trusses. An innovative winged single-truss pedestrian bridge and fan trussmark the main entrance.

Architectural elements complementthe steel structures. A contemporary ar-chitectural vocabulary reflects thisarea's reputation for cutting-edge tech-nology and communication industries.Traditional Texas themes blend withthe architectural elements; Texas lime-stone pillars, motifs and steel sculp-tural art complement the structuralsystem. A glass elevator, wrapped by asteel stair, extends through the over-head trusses.

The combination of the interweav-ing skylight system and steel spanevokes an exciting and spacious prom-enade, reflecting seasonal and hourlyvariances of light.

Located in Kearney, NE, andspanning a busy stretch ofInterstate 80, the GreatPlatte River Road ArchwayMonument celebrates both

historic pioneer migration trails andthe more contemporary links that jointhe eastern and western halves of theUnited States. The monument's ex-hibits draw parallels between the moretraditional Mormon, Oregon and Cali-fornia trails, and the other "trails" thatfollowed: the Pony Express, the firsttelegraph line, the TranscontinentalRailroad, the Lincoln Highway, Inter-state 80 and fiber optic cables.

The monument, which appears tobe a large bridge structure over the in-terstate, contains a two-story building.

Filled with interactive exhibits, thebuilding is accessed through pavilionsthat serve as abutments for the 308'span. Numerous architectural treat-ments were considered for the facadesbefore deciding that the best solutionfor a building of such length was to ex-pose the structure. The skin and thestructure were reversed, exposing anarched truss of weathering steel, re-plete with bolts, welds and plates.Glass panels forming the skin of themonument are located behind the steeltruss.

The monument's location (spanningan interstate highway) required inno-vating construction techniques. Theentire structure-including cladding androofing-was constructed on one side of

the highway and "rolled out" over thehighway at night. The building incor-porates a steel plate floor at the lowerlevel, adapted from the concept of or-thotropic plate bridge decks. This floorserves as the primary tension tie andenabled the designers to minimize themass of the lower chord of the truss-de-sirable from both an economic and vi-sual standpoint. Loads are transferredfrom the webs of the girders into theplate at each corner through full-pene-tration welds.

To protect the building from poten-tial petroleum-fueled fires from theroadway below, the building was fire-engineered, resulting in the addition ofdiscreetly detailed steel plate flameshields.

Given the span, steel was the logical choice. The use of weathering steel is consistent withthe rustic setting of the “frontier.” At once romantic and evocative, it recalls the past in amuscular way that is totally American and unquestionably bold.

Located among the hills ofPomona, CA, this dramatichigh school was the result ofa design competition spon-sored by the school district.

The campus was designed on an “un-buildable” hillside site acquired by theschool district for $1. A $13 milliongrading project created 30 usable acreson the steep slope at a fraction of thecost of condemned urban land in thedistrict.

The exciting forms and massing ofthe individual buildings could only becost-effective with structural steel

frames. Dramatic features include atrussed 65’ cantilevered element, whichbeckons to the school’s main entryfrom the Administration Building. Theexposed steel trusses in the gymna-sium offer a strong aesthetic whileachieving an innovative structural de-sign. To maximize usable squarefootages, many buildings feature largesteel-framed cantilevers.

In the interest of controlling energymanagement at the site’s sunny hillsidelocation, the majority of exterior wallsurface area was placed below grade tominimize direct heat gain. The result-ing structure is highly energy-efficient.

The Utah Olympic Oval inKearns, UT, is all aboutsteel-from the speed skater'sblades to the top of the cablesuspension towers. By

using a cable suspension system tosupport the arena roof, the 310'-spanroof trusses are only 3' deep (comparedto the 18' depth required by a typicalframing scheme). The shallower roofstructure reduced the enclosed build-ing volume by 2.6 million cubic feetand reduced the required steel tonnageby 953 tons.

According to The Salt Lake Tribuneon May 27, 2001, "Olympic speedskaters in 2002 will fly around a build-ing that is designed to be as energy ef-ficient as it is visually stunning. The[Olympic Oval]'s roof is held up by acable suspension system similar to thatof the Golden Gate Bridge. The dra-

matically lowered roof …makes itcheaper to heat and cool the arena."The smaller enclosed volume also al-lows for optimum indoor air tempera-tures for skating and for ice control.

The creative use of steel and otherfunctional and sustainable design fea-tures (including the tower-adjoiningwhite heat-reflecting roof) earned thefirst of thirteen worldwide Leadershipin Energy and Environmental Design(LEED) ratings from the U.S. GreenBuilding Council.

Nestled within a nativepine forest gently slop-ing to the lake, thePavilion at SymphonyLake in Cary, NC, has a

transformable stage capable of sup-porting symphony, theater, dance andopera, outdoor seating for 7,000, a cov-ered pavilion for 300-seat dining or500-seat lectures, concessions andticket booth and support spaces. Pro-viding a high-tech civic icon to a fast-growing new town, the Pavilion in thePark features extensive use of steel,glass, and wood.

One goal of the pavilion was to inte-

grate with the wooded area. The verti-cal lattice-like steel structure is in har-mony with the scale and nature of thepines, while the thin steel columns andtransparent glass surround allows foroptimum viewing of the trees and lake,which in turn provide the enclosure ofthe stage. The dining crescent at therear of the audience area forms theback edge of the audience clearing. Theglowing steel and glass lantern overthe stage stores and masks theaterequipment, shelters performers andcreates a visual delight for the audiencewith computer-controlled flickeringbulbs that mimic a basket of fireflies.

Another goal was to create a flexibledesign. Draperies can transform theconcert shell into a proscenium theater,and the choral loft transforms into anorchestra loft for dance and opera. Theorchestra pit provides a dance floor orextra seating when covered.

A vast speaker grid placed incon-spicuously amongst the trees providesbalanced and articulated sound forlarge audiences. The computer-en-hanced sound system generateswarmth of indoor reverberation in anoutdoor setting, and the glass shellaround stage offers acoustic supportfor musicians and audience.

Emphasizing the “lightness”of common structures in theaerospace industry, the de-signers of the Learning Lab-oratory for Complex

Systems at features glass and steel ele-ments in exterior and interior wall sys-tems to complement the heaviermasonry look of the existing building.The new stainless steel, long spanhangar roof system also reinforces afeeling of “lightness” by springingfrom small HSS columns in the win-

dow walls. The roof structure incorpo-rates a series of delicate steel king postand rod trusses that reinforce the“lightness” of the roof. The exteriorwindow wall is comprised of a series ofsteel channels, which in turn support asteel window system. Even the over-sized bi-fold hangar door incorporatesa glazing system that coordinatesclosely with the steel window wall togive the overall space a generous senseof transparency and daylight.

sightlines were incorporated into majorportions of the new interior walls suchas in the library, fabrication shops andvarious specialty classrooms. Metalpanel cladding was the material ofchoice when the east brick façade of thebuilding was discovered to have struc-tural problems. Using a metal paneltreatment in combination with the newsteel windows allowed the hangar addition and the existing low speedwind tunnel to blend with the newerstructures.

Straight-forward, workmanlike, yet inventive ap-proach to steel construction: devoid of stylisticmoves. Simple, clean and well-engineered. Nononsense here. A very honest, down-to-earth useof steel… No gimmick! A raw expression of the ma-terial with its structural integrity and detailing.

The architects of the DonaldW. Reynolds Center werechallenged to combine thefunctions of patient serv-ices, clinical research, basic

research and education in an environ-ment that promotes information ex-change between researchers andpatients.

The canopy of the entrance courtfeatures exposed structural steel tree-like supports and a transparent glassroof, bringing the outdoors right up tothe edge of the lobby. In the lobby it-self, an exposed roof deck and exposedstructure play an integral role in allow-ing the lobby to feel spacious, blurringthe distinction between inside and out-side. Exterior steel and glass framescontinue the look and feel of the entrycanopy while shading large areas ofglass curtain walls. The atrium spaceincorporates a 200'-long south-facingclerestory window to connect thespace to the outdoors. Ornamentalsteel handrails and small balconiesprovide a series of dramatic focalpoints.

This project has received designawards from both the Arkansas StateAIA in 2001 as well as the Gulf StatesRegion AIA in 2002.

Elegant and refined use of steel to create trans-parent pavilions which engage, rather than op-pose, the surrounding masonry structures. Thesteel detailing is unstudied and clear yet it main-tains a complexity that comes from incredible at-tention to detail.

Built in the early 1970s, theImperial Bank Tower inCosta Mesa, CA, requiredupdating to match the qual-ity of adjacent properties

within the owner’s office campus. Thefocus of the renovation is a glass vaultthat replaces the original connectinglink between the Tower and the adja-cent office building. The spaciousglass-clad lobby is the crossroads ofpaths between the adjacent structuresand serves as an informal gatheringspace.

The use of an extremely light steel-and-cable support system, in conjunc-tion with a highly engineeredstructural steel frame, maximizes theglazing while allowing the entire struc-ture to be exposed. Seismic move-ments between the two buildings arehandled by the cumulative movementaccommodated at each silicone glassjoint and by the inherent flexural prop-erties of steel.

The World Peace Bell and Pavilion in Newport, KY, form the be-ginning of Newport’s Millennium Monument Center develop-ment. As the world’s largest free-swinging bell, the WorldPeace Bell weighs nearly 45 tons and is 12’ tall and 12’ in diameter.

Standing 54’ tall, the Pavilion incorporates 50 tons of structural steel.The architects chose structural steel because of steel’s historic significancein the Ohio River valley. The Pavilion’s bolting patterns and x-braces arereminiscent of the steel bridges and train trestles that span the Ohio River.

The Pavilion is clad with glass panels with horizontal 1” frit bands.The semi-transparent look gives the bell mechanism the appearance of aglass-enclosed mechanical clock.

Extremely proud of their ex-tensive park system, thesmall suburban communityof Roseville, MN, boastsnearly 30 parks for a total of

more than 600 acres of open space. Pro-viding a variety of public services andamenities including play areas, pic-nicking facilities, ball fields, ice rinks,trails and golf courses, the parks andrecreation department is in the processof replacing many of its existing parkshelters, starting with three of the sys-

tem’s parks: Acorn, Central and Ever-green.

The new buildings serve a widerange of functions: a picnic shelter forgroups of up to 200 people (600 sq. ft.,enclosed; 4,200 sq. ft., roof area), a con-cession stand for little league baseball(770 sq. ft., enclosed) and two winterice rink warming houses with restroom facilities and staging areas forsummer playground activities (1,000sq. ft., enclosed, 2,000 sq. ft., roof area).In accordance with the program, thenew shelters are designed to be proto-

types for other park structures that willbe considered in future years. As such,all of the shelters have a consistent anddurable aesthetic and remain withinthe $122/sq. ft. budget established bythe client. Large roof overhangs aresupported by an arbor-like structure ofgalvanized steel beams and cedar. Inseveral years, the steel and cedar trel-lises will be entwined with vines,planted in the concrete bases of thestructural columns. The seamless flowfrom interior to exterior alludes to parkand recreation aesthetics of the past.
