Byactivelyengaginginaclosereadingfromachoiceofprescribedbooks,acriticalanalysisofpersonalmemorywillbegintheprocessofadaptivereusedesign.Byviewingtheresidueofhabitationandlifeinprogress,spatialdesignwillbeanalysed.Buildingsandstructuresinevitablyageandoutgrowtheiroriginalfunctions.Yetwithchangesinsociety,technologyandlifestyle,constructionanddesignareconstantlyupdatedtomeetmoderndemands,andolderstructuresareleftinthewakeofchange.Thispaperaimstoprovidestrategiesforarchitecturaldesigninterventionthroughthesynthesisofpersonalmemory.Aplaceorexperiencethatresonatespriortoarchitecturaleducationwillbeunpackedanditsassociationstoarchitecturewillberigorouslyexaminedthroughmanyreferencessuchas:sculpture,poetry,art,models,drawings,collageandembroidery.ViaaWunderkammerofthismeaningfulmemory,atoolboxforleadingadesigninterventionto,orwithinaheritagebuildingwillbedeveloped.Theheritagebuildingsandsitesaretobeviewedasrealmsofpossibilitiesandnotasazonesofrestriction.Theaimistoseemeaningfulmemoryaspositiveinnatureandnotcentredontrauma.
Acrossthesemester,referencedresearchofheritagebuildingsandsiteswillberequired,aswillareviewoftheclosereadingofaprescribedbookandanon-referencedreviewofaselectedmeaningfulmemory.
TOPICSTRUCTUREANDCONTENT
TwoHeritagebuildingswillbeinvestigatedthroughoutthesemesterandonlyoneandtheproposeddesigninterventionwillbepresentedatthefinalcritique.Thesewillbe:
• the1910GraftonBridgetramshelterandtoilets,
• theTiborDonner’smidcenturyCityWorkShops.Thefirstthreeweekswillhavelimiteddigitaloutputexceptformeasureddrawingstofocusonreadingandcriticalwriting.
