Archaebacteria

• Prokaryotes

• Several hundred known species

• Most live in extreme environments

• Can be found in swamps, deep ocean thermal vents, and sea-water evaporating ponds.

Questions

• We learned about the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. List 3 differences.

• Why might it be advantageous to have the adaptations that allow survival in extreme environments?

Eubacteria

• Prokaryotes

• Very strong cell walls.

• Found in most environments except the extreme environments occupied by archaebacteria

• Some cause diseases such as strep throat but most are harmless.

Questions

• Some bacteria can do photosynthesis. What trophic level would these bacteria exist at?

• What color would a photosynthetic bacteria be?

• What wavelengths of light would they absorb? What would they reflect?

Protista

• Eukaryote that lacks complex organ systems.

• Fossil of protists shown to be up to 2 million years old.

• Some are animal like, some plant like, some fungus like.

• Can be unicellular or multicellular

Questions

• Some protists have hair-like appendages that help them move. What are these called?

• At what trophic level would the fungus-like protists exist?

• Which process would animal-like protists use to make energy?

Fungi

• Eukaryote

• Heterotrophs that do not move.

• Oldest fossil 400 million years old

• Absorb nutrients from organic material in the environment.

Questions

• Fungi do not move but we know they are alive. What are the characteristics of life?

• Yeast is a type of fungus. Recall that we used yeast for a lab where they filled balloons with a gas after alcoholic fermentation. What was that gas?

Plants

• Multicellular Eukaryotes

• Do not move

• Very diverse

• Autotrophs/producers

• Cells usually contain chloroplasts

Questions

• Plants use photosynthesis to get energy. What is the equation for photosynthesis.

• Photosynthesis has 2 parts: The light reactions and the Calvin Cycle. Where in the chloroplast do these each take place?

Animals

• Multicellular eukaryotes.

• Heterotrophs

• Very diverse

• Cells organized into tissues, organs, and organ systems.

• No cell walls

Questions

• Animals use cellular respiration to get energy. What is the equation for cellular respiration?

• How much ATP is produced during cell respiration?

• Oxygen is required for cellular respiration. What process is used when no oxygen is present?
