The Campuan
The Campuan, a resort villa development located in Ubud, Bali, departs rom typical Balinese resort
design that reers to traditional local architecture with pitched-roo buildings set up in a village-like
kampong setting. The resorts owner, instead, sought a development that adopted a new approach,
both architecturally and environmentally.
The Campuan resort comprises seven three-bedroom villas, each with a private pool, laid out down
a steep slope overlooking the Ayung Gorge. Aiming to respect the resorts natural environment, the
architects wanted to limit the visibility o the buildings and create a contemporary look.
As such, the villas are low-prole buildings, mindul o their surroundings. Flat, lea-shaped roos
minimise the resorts silhouette. Roo gardens blanket each building, giving the resort the appearanc
o a chain o interlocking leaves. Jack ruit and coconut trees spring up through open spaces in the
roos.
Skylights introduce natural light during the day, and illuminate the gardens at night. The buildings ar
constructed o raw concrete, which provides a sharp contrast to their sleek, rened interiors. The vil
are laid out to fow seamlessly rom one room to another.
The architects have incorporated a number o environmentally riendly building strategies into the
design. A lush tropical garden utilises wastewater rom the resort or irrigation. The water fows down
the resorts sloping site, ltered by vegetation, and is then recycled or toilets.
Other green strategies include using solar panels to supplement electricity; recycled ironwood rom
old boat or pool decking; and solar heat to warm up the water.
In addition to the villas, the resort has reception acilities, a restaurant and bar, and a spa.

The Marina Bay SandsIntegrated Resort
The Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort, an iconic development planned or Singapores waterront,
will redefne the city-states urban landscape. Designed by Boston-based Moshe Sadie Associates
with Aedas Singapore, the over-S$5 billion project includes a fve-star hotel and casino; meeting,
convention and exhibition acilities; internationally renowned restaurants and an array o retail outlets.
Positioned between the Marina Bay waterront and the extensive Garden at Marina South, the Marina
Bay Sands aims to become the defning landmark or Singapore.
The projects silhouette is defned by the three hotel towers, which split and splay towards the bottom,
creating the space or a glazed atrium that connects the three buildings. They are also angled to
enhance the sculptural eect. The aade acing the Garden at Marina South brings the greenery onto
the towers through landscaped balconies, contrasting with the glazed aade acing Marina Bay.
The Sky Park, a one-hectare rootop space set atop the three hotel towers, will eature spas and
restaurants. A sculptured garden, planted with lush greenery and set amidst swimming pools, jogging
paths and terraces, will serve as a tranquil sanctuary or visitors. A public observation deck at one end
o the Sky Park will oer 360-degree views o Singapores skyline and the surrounding area.
Another key highlight o the developments design will be the unique structure o the ArtScience
Museum, positioned on the Marina Bay side o the development. Its lotus-inspired roo is a symbolic
welcome gesture to visitors to Singapore. The museum aims to advance the exploration o the arts
and sciences, and the connections between them. The other low-rise components are unifed visually
through their sculptural wave-like roos.
Las Vegas Sands Corp. was awarded the project tender in May 2006. The project is in its design
development stage and is slated to be completed in 2009.
