REASONS FOR CHANGE

• Restrictions in ABC Codabar standard – possibility that a repeat unit number might happen.

• Old component code system is unable to systematically naming modified products with multiple attributes

- Autologous deglycerolized leuco-reduced RBC irradiated divided unit.

• Improve donations look back system– Donation Identification number (DIN) system

• ISBT 128 standard will be the global standard– ABC Codabar symbology will be phased out

DEVELOP CHANGE STRATEGY• Study the ISBT standard technical specifications

from ICCBBA web-site

– Learned from other blood banks & attending

international conferences

• ISBT 128 standard affects many blood bank

processes

• Blood bank computer system is pertinent to

implementation of ISBT standard
