The first Lutheran missionary toJapan was commissioned at St.Johns Lutheran Church inCharleston in the late 1800s.Because of those early ties, TheJapan Evangelical LutheranChurch is now a companionsynod to South Carolina. Sincethat early start, the JELC hasgrown to over 23,000 baptizedmembers, 119 churches and 97clergy.Japan has experienced the triple

tragedy of earthquake, tsunamiand some nuclear radiationemissions. Even though bothLutheran churches in the city ofSendai are OK and one even hasfull use of its utilities, theLutheran Church in Japan needsour help. Being socially mindedas ourselves, the JELC is sendingvolunteers to go into areas thathave been the hardest hit. Theywould greatly welcome ourfinancial support so that it can

be distributed through theirnetwork of relief and assistancewhere it is needed most.Pray for the people of Japan andg i ve generous l y to the i rrecovery. Money given throughSt. Peter will be forwarded tothe South Carolina Synod andthen on to the Japan EvangelicalLutheran Church. It will not gothrough the ELCA.

LENTThe word Lent was derived from the old Anglo Saxon wordLencten for Spring and it is a 40-day (not including Sundays thatbegins with Ash Wednesday) period of prayer and spiritual selfexamination that prepares believing Christians for Easter. Lenttherefore, is identified with the passion and suffering of Christ, whodied for our sins, and the 40 days is reflective of the 40 days Jesusfasted in the desert.

This year Ill be focusing on the following Books of the Bible duringour evenings together. Well look at their history and message andsee if they can teach us something new.

The images are heart wrenching. While we sit in our safe andcomfortable homes, almost a million

people are without shelter, food andmissing loved ones. We are stilluncertain what the future holds forthe nuclear reactors and nowvolcanoes are erupting, whats next?So what can we do besides pray forthese people? We give. But beforeyou decide on where to send funds,do your homework and make themost of the dollars you sendoverseas.

    Charities and Give To An

    Established Give to known

charities such as the (Japanese) RedCross, Save The Children, World

Vision, Salvation Army, Unicef andDoctors Without Borders.

    Designate Your Investment

Generally, it is best to trust yourchosen charity to spend yourdonation as it sees fit, but withdisaster related giving, you shouldspecify that you want your donationonly used to respond to thisparticular crisis.

Do Not Send Supplies Knowing that people are desperatelyin need of food and water; it is hardnot to want to pack up a box ofsupplies and send it to Japan, but thistype of philanthropy is simply notpractical or efficient. Charities areoften able to partner with companiesto acquire large amounts of in-kind

donations such as bottled water andnew clothing. Have a garage sale andturn your used goods into cash and

donate that to a worthy charity.

    B e C a r e f u l O f E m a i l

Sol ic itat ions and Avoid

    Telemarketers

    Seek Out The Charitys

    Authorized Website Criminals

    are likely to set up bogus sites tosteal the identity and money ofg e n e r o u s and unsuspe c t i n g

individuals. We saw this afterHurricane Katrina when the FBIreported that 4,000 sites werecreated to do just that. If you plan togive online, be sure to find thecharitys legitimate site.

    Consider The Nature Of The

Charitys Work Not everycharity is responding in the sameway. Some are providing medicalassistance, some shelter, some food

and water. Others will be morefocused on either short term or longterm rebuilding efforts. And some arejust helping to fundraise for othernonprofits. Think about what it is youwant your philanthropic investmentto accomplish and then take the timeto find the charities doing that work.

During Hurricane Katrina, theJapanese Foreign Ministry said that itwould provide $200,000 to the

American Red Cross to assist victimsof Hurricane Katrina. Japan alsoidentified needs in affected regionsvia the U.S. government and providedup to $1,000,000 in emergencysupplies such as tents, blankets andpower generators if they receiverequests from the U.S. for suchassistance. Private and corporatedonations totaled over $13,000,000.

    How Does This Happen?

As you read this, we haveall traveled together through the

    Lenten journeythrough the

rocks and sands of the desert,

    through the wilderness and craggy

    outcrops of stony mountaintops.

We are NOT spectators; we are

    PARTICIPANTS. We are not the

bystanders on the sidelines of the

    Masters Golf Tournament. WE ARE

THE PLAYERS. So, we arrive at the ThreeDays, beginning with Maundy

    Thursday. As we celebrate Holy

    Communion, do we not have

glimpses of the Last Supper? Were

we not all represented there as

    disciples? Would we be the

Betrayer? We now sit at the table

with all the other disciples gazing at

the face of the one who would die

for us all. We are the players. We are

    not bystanders. T h e G a r d e n o fGethsemane is foggy with the

settling in of nightfall. There is a

    sense of expectation in that

    uncomfortable way. We sleep with

the disciples at the edge of the

    garden among the brambles and

rocks. We do not stay awake for

just one hour either. We are the

sleepers. We are the players. We

    are the betrayers. We gaze into a small fire,h u d d l i n g f o r w a r m t h a s

    temperatures cool. Someone

recognizes us as some of Jesus

disciples. We are the players. We

deny him three times before the

cock crows at dawn. We denounce

him emphatically, even though wejust supped with him not long ago.

We are NO mere bystanders. You

see, we will sell him for thirty

pieces of silver. We will shout

Crucify Him! with the rest. We

will cheer when Jesus is beaten

and flogged. We are the players. We

know the script. We know our

    entrances.

And as the wind sweepsover the hill of Golgotha, the place

of Skulls, we gather our head

cloths and cloaks around us and

gaze upon the bleeding and dying

form of Christ. We weep, yet we

pierce his side, we nail his hands

and feet. We feel the earth shake

under our feet for WE ARE NOT

    Spectators. WE are the players.

How does this happen? How can we be innocent

    b y s t a n d e r s ? T h i s i s t h e

representation of all our sin and

guilt, blood staining the ground and

seeping into the rocks. WE are the

players. We are the SINNERS. Jesus

is the pure. Jesus is the holy. So

how can we NOT come during the

services of Holy Week and repent

for what we know we have done?

How does it happen that we DO

NOT come? All of us must supply

the answer when we are asked

these questions by God? Do you

    have your answer ready?
