HABITATHummingbirds are found in mosthabitats across North America, including backyards. Offering nectarfeeders and nectar-producing plantswill help you maximize the number ofhummingbirds that visit your yard.

RECOMMENDED FEEDERSHow often does a hummingbird flit into the nectar feeder, take a drink anddart off too quickly for you to get anydecent looks? What about flying tothe backside of a feeder where youcan't see them? What if you couldslow them down to get a longer look and see them anywhere on the feeder?

The WBU High-Perch Hummingbird Feeders are theanswer. We recommend using the Wild Birds UnlimitedHigh-Perch Hummingbird Feeder to attract the most

hummingbirds to your yard.Designed to appeal to hummingbirds, this feeder allowsthem to hover or perch while feeding. It does not leak. Beescan't access the nectar solution, and the built-in ant moatdeters ants. The feeder is easy to clean, and the nectarsolution recipe is on the feeder.

Based on our standard feeder, the Wild Birds Unlimited Decorative WindowHummingbird Feeder brings the birds in for closer views. Watch their tongues lap upthe food, darting in and out of the nectar solution up to 12 times per second. It is theonly window hummingbird feeder that contains an ant moat.We offer assorted decorative glass or ceramichummingbird feeders. They are beautiful for youand functional for the birds.

RECOMMENDED ITEMSOffer our Wild Birds Unlimited Nectar, or mix upyour own water and sugar (4:1 ratio). Cleannectar feeders every two to four days; then fillwith fresh nectar solution.Use the Wild Birds Unlimited Nectar Port Brushto keep your feeder clean and presentable forhummingbirds.Keep ants out of non-WBU nectar feeders withthe Trap-It Ant Moat.

April's High Desert Bird-of-the-Month: Local Blackbirds ... Red-winged &Brewer's There are many members of the Blackbird family inour area, including orioles and grackles. For thisarticle we will concentrate on two of the most familiar- Red-winged and Brewer's. Red-winged blackbirdscan be found all across North America, in wetlandsand marshes, but also on golf courses, driermeadows and pastures, and even at backyard birdfeeders. The male is easily recognizable, being all glossyblack with red and yellow shoulder patches. Duringbreeding season you can see them sitting oncattails, fence posts or other high perches singing

nonstop; sometimes puffing up their shoulder patches in display. The female ispatterned very differently than the male, being a subdued, streaky brown much like alarge sparrow. Brewer's Blackbirds are a little larger, about

Robin-sized, and look very different fromRed-winged. The male is a glossy, iridescentblack with a bright yellow eye. Females areplainer brown, a little darker on the wings and tailand have a dark eye. In our area Brewer's canbe found just about anywhere from grasslandsand marshes to sagebrush and woodlands, aswell as lawns, golf courses, city streets andparking lots. Local Birdsightings by Jacque Lowery I hope you all are enjoyingthe official Spring season. The blossomingornamental and fruit treesare spectacular right now, especially in concert withbirds singing their springsongs. Keep your fingerscrossed that there is nolate frost to destroy ourchances of fruit this year. I spent two weeks inHawaii, which made mybackyard observation timea little short this month. There is a lot of courtshipbehavior going on, with several people reporting Mourning Doves on nests already.Great Horned Owls (probably the earliest avian nester) are sitting on eggs or feedinghatchlings at this time.
