● Apply pre-emergent weed control to prevent germination of weeds and unwanted plants in your landscape. Moana recommends: Green Light Amaze and Monterey Weed Impede for flower beds & non-planted areas, hillsides, paths, etc.) and Green Light Portrait for lawns. Aerate your lawn, and if necessary, dethatch.

● Feed lawn with Dr. Earth Lawn Fertilizer.● Prevent crabgrass and feed lawn with Scotts Turf Builder with Halts.● Purchase and plant dormant Star roses now. Dormant roses offer a greater

selection than roses available in May and since there are no leaves, the cane structure is clearly visible. Planting them now will promote strong roots and beautiful blooms earlier than if you waited until may to buy roses already in leaf and bloom. to promote strong roots and beautiful blooms.

● Plant fruit trees - pear, apple, peach, cherry, apricot, nectarine & plum -- on a dry day before buds swell with Dr. Earth Fruit Tree Planting Mix and Dr. Earth Fruit Tree Fertilizer; mulch with Gardner & Bloome Soil Building Compost. Spray with Liquid Fence FreezePruf when buds begin to swell to prevent frost damage by protecting buds from 2 - 9 degrees F below freezing

● Plant trees and shrubs while they are still dormant -- before they break bud. ● Feed existing fruit trees with Dr. Earth Fruit Tree Fertilizer.

that they won't benefit from preventative treatment, just that they have demonstrated superior pest and disease resistance). Of special note is the variety 'Sunshine Daydream', a yellow grandiflora, which is the first traditional garden rose to win the All-American Rose Selection under "no-spray" conditions. All Fiber Pot roses are #1 grade with a minimum of three substantial canes measuring at least 3/8" in caliper.

Spring Color and Greenhouse Plants For those of you with spring fever you'll want a few poppies, ranunculus, primrose, candytuft, primrose and pansies to add to an indoor or outdoor container. And we have a great variety of new greenhouse plants, including orchids, violets and flowering azaleas and gardenias to provide instant color indoors.

Bird of the Month: Western Bluebird Western Bluebirds are small, stocky thrushes with thin, straight bills and fairly short tails. Males are shiny blue above with rust-orange extending from a vest on the breast onto the upper back. Females are gray-buff with a pale orange wash on the breast and blue tints to the wings and tail. The throat is blue in males and gray-buff in females, and the lower belly is whitish. Western bluebirds are highly social and usually feed in flocks during the non-breeding season. They hunt for terrestrial insects (grasshoppers, caterpillars, beetles, ants and others) by dropping to the ground from a low perch. They also frequently feed on berries (mistletoe, juniper and elderberry) in trees. They rely on trees both for nesting cavities and hunting perches; they also perch on fences and utility lines. Western Bluebirds live in open woodland, both coniferous and deciduous, and also are found in backyards, burned areas, and farmland, from sea level far up into the mountains. Fun Facts:

● Bluebirds have no blue pigments in their feathers. Instead, each feather barb has a thin layer of cells that absorb all wavelengths of color except blue. Only the blue wavelength is reflected and scattered, resulting in their blue appearance to our eyes.

● Bluebirds can spot caterpillars and insects in tall grass at the remarkable distance of over 50 yards.

● Males may carry next material to the nest, but they do not participate in the actual building. They spend much of that time guarding their mates to prevent them from mating with other males.
