"Dispelling the myths on Medical Treatment and Outcomes in the Australian Bush."

Make the most of the evening and join other members at 6. OOpm for a convivial (BYO) meal at the Vietnamese Restaurant at O'connor Shops (the one on the corner). Try to be early to ensure there will be ample time to finish and still get to the meeting in comfortable time.

PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE

Thank you to the many members who attended the last general meeting at which we heard, debated and argued with Brian Weir from the ACT Parks and Conservation Dept. over the useffilness of entrance and licensing fees, the overall agenda of the Government and other aspects of the Marketing Strategies and Options Plan. I have since spoken to Brian and he is keen to keep in contact and let us know what is being considered within the ACT. Thank you to Eric Pickering who contacted many members of the Family Bushwalkers Club. I was pleased at how the evening progressed. Since this Report has been raised I have been contacted by a number of people who have expressed different viewpoints and some of these will be published in the next IT

(due to space constraint over the Membership List in this issue).

In this IT is Rob Horsfield's suggested form for all leaders to complete with regards• to walks. Rob intends to compile a Walks Inventory/Log for the Club over the next 2 years and from these a possible revised book on Bus/iwaiks Around Canberra may be produced. The last was produced in 1974 and was a great success. Before any new book is started a possible market needs to be examined as well as the selection of walks.

Recently in The Canberra Times was an article on Ginini Flats. Because it is the home of the rare Corroboree Frog (bur Club emblem) and other

small animals, the Ginini Flats has been designated Wetlands of International Significance.

In the IT is a centrefold lift-out Membership List. This has been the work of Alan Vidler and Roger Edwards. These addresses are not sent to the libraries or interstate clubs.

And the weather was magnificent for the Sentinel walk. Wild stormy clouds clouds clearing to warm sunny weather, almost hot enough to swim in a little waterfall (remember guys!) And the views stretched to Victoria.

ICONSERVATION NOTES I Remnant Roadside Vegetation within the ACT The Conservation Council of the South-East Region & Canberra has asked our Club (we are a member of CCSERAC) to help to "identif' areas of known environmental significance along the rural road network" in the ACT and surrounds. There is special concern along the Kings Highway and the Sutton-Queanbeyan road because of proposed roadworks.

The object is to identif' areas of "significant remnant vegetation", that is, vegetation which has been preserved in its original fonn. Often this happens alongside roadways between the road surface and the fence line. If you think an area may still have remnant vegetation, please contact either:

CCSERAC, GPO Box 1875, Canberra ACT 2601 (Fax: 248 5343); or Mr James Cox, Roads and Traffic Section, Dept of Urban Services, Tel: 207 6602

I MEMBERSHIP MATTERS I New members: Rod McCrea, Lyons; Dave Cox, Deaking; Tim Falkiand, Watson; Adrienne Beddis, Hall; Henry Gardner, O'Connor

I FROM THE EDITOR

We are on The Web (Trial till May 1996)

If you would like to find the Club Program on the World Wide Web (which you don't really need to do if you are reading this!), you can find iton the Internet at

http://www.pcug.org.aul—axnikkels/cbcprog.html

Allan Mikkelsen is our Webmaster and is providing our web page as a voluntary service to the Club.

The Committee has decided that communications from Netsurfers should be kept under a watchfUl eye: that is, mine. There are no phone numbers or addresses or leaders' names on the web page. If people want to contact the club, they must first e-mail me and I'll put them in touch with the person they need. If I feel, from the nature of someone's message, that there could be any problems, I will discuss the message with the President and Leader before replying.

Don't forget that the closing date for copy for IT is always the Committee Meeting each month (La 4th Wednesday). The typing, composing, printing and publishing schedule is very tight, so I can't guarantee that I can put your article, walk report, walk preview, gripe, poem, fin comment or Bushy Tale in the next IT unless you can get word to me in time.

I do the final processing in Word 2 for Windows. If you have a Macintosh of the right type, or if you are using Word 6 on a PC, it would help if you could give me an IBM PC formatted disk with the file saved in Word '2 for Windows. If you are running a bit late, this saves me re-typing.

If you have an idea for an article, or a short pithy comment, give me a call and I'll write it up for you. It can be anonymous or pseudonymical (unless it's seriously controversial). I'll cheek the final version with you before publication.

You can contact me by

17 April - 15 May (approx) - Grand Cycle Tour of South Eastern Australia - L/R Canberra -Cobargo - Bennagui - Mallacoota Inlet - Orbost - Suggan Buggan - Jindabyne - Kosciusko - Tantangara - Canberra.. Mountain bikes essential. Dates Negotiable, come for all or part of the trip. Leader: John J'Ons 231 6326 (h)

13 April - Bungonia Gorge and Shoalhaven River- M/M-R Descend the steep red track into Bungonia Gorge, followed by a walk through the spectacular sheer walled gorge then a scramble round, over, under and through large limestone boulders for a few hundred metres (this is the roughest bit). Then a gentle walk along Bungonia Creek to the Shoalhaven and upstream to a wide sandy beach for lunch. The direct r9ute out (mainly on the white track) features a 500 metre ascent with views both ways along the Shoalhaven River. Map: Caoura 1:25 000 Leader: Vance Brown 251 3997(h) Trinsport about $18.

Sunday 14Apr11 - Naas Gorge - L/E-M Naas Gorge occurs at the steep downcut where the Naas River thlls from the elevation of the high valleys almost to the level of the Canberra plains. The gorge features a series of cascades and waterfalls and a number of geological erosion features of some note. Access involves a longish slog along the Naas Valley trail from Caloola Fann, but the gorge's unique character makes it worth the effort. Map: Michelago and Colinton 1:25 000 Leader: Terence Uren 217 2037w or 282 2403h Transport: about $6 Note: Bookings taken until 2pm Saturday.

13 - 14 April - Witses Hut - M/E-M From the Tantangara Road, follow a ridge, then range to Blanket Hill. After a slight descent to the north, we will come across the delightful Witses Hut. This hut has CBC history as the place where a cup of tea taken by David Truman (the leader) was saved on the Long, Long, Long ... Plain to Kiandra daywalk, renamed by Alan Mikkelsen in an attempt to restore some credibility to the trio. My trip from a different direction, taking two days will be much, much, much shorter. Return route via Nungar Creek Trail. Map: Tantangara 1:100 000 Leader: Richard Bain 257 4816(h) 265 5222(w) Transport: about $25.

13 - 14Apr11 - Mts Kelly, Scabby and Burbidge - M1R As well as climbing the three rocky peaks for magnificent alpine views, you will see giant granite rock-fices on the south side of Mt Gudgenby, camp by an idyllic tarn on the ridge between Scabby and Kelly and visit Yankee Hat paintings. Map: ACT 1:100 000 Leader: George Carter 2512130 (h) 263 3549(w) Transport: about

8pm Dickson Library. Ted Wiltshire from St Johns Ambulance presents "Dispelling the myths on Medical Treatment and Outcomes in the Australian Bush."

Saturday 20 April - Mt Coree and Devil's Peak - M/M-R From the arboretum car park at Blundell's Flat a steep climb of 640 metres to Mt Coree for great views from the fire tower at the top. Then down the ridge to the saddle between Coree and Devil's Peak with plenty of lunch spots with fine views on the way. Then a 300 metre climb to Devil's Peak for more views before returning to the saddle and an easy walk back on 4WD track to the cars. Map: Cotter Dam 1:25 000 Leader: Chris Roper 287 1243(h) 272 5151(w) Transport: $7.

Saturday 20 AprIl - Corang Peak - M-UE Walk from Wog Wog to Corang Peak and return along tracks. Extensive views to Pidgeon House and other peaks and valleys of the Budawangs. A good introduction to the area. Map: CMW Budawangs Leader: Gary Trevean 285 1 135h or 266 4149w or email gtreveannavmat.gov.au Transport: about $15

21 April - Mt Domain - M/E From Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve follow the fire trail to fishing Gap. From here a foot track takes you north along the Tidbinbilla Range to Mt Domain. Return via entry route. Excellent views (360°) along range and sub alpine bush. An easy trip, but a climb of 600 metres which is gradual. Map: ACT 1:100 000 Leader: Richard Bain 257 4816(h) 265 5222(w) Transport: $5

20-21 April - Orroral - Yaouk - Morgan, Murray, Bimberi , Orroral Car Swap - M/R - LiE This was a popular trip until the mid-SO's when a property changed hands. It changed hands again a couple of years ago. The party starting from Yaouk will climb Morgan and Murray before going to one of my favourite campsites between Bimberi and Murray. After a convivial joint camp they will proceed via Bimberi (ACT's highest), Cotter Hut and Cotter Gap to Orroral. The other party will do the reverse. The LIE version would be to skip all peaks and follow fire trails all the 'way, just looking at the gfeat scenery. Combinations possible. Maps: Rendezvous Creek & Yaouk 1:25 000 Leader: Alan Vidler 2545373(h) Transport: $13.

NEW / REVISED EDITION: "BUSHWALKING NEAR CANBERRA"

General Information

The previous book was published by CEC in 1974. It contains an introductory section on the Art of Bushwalldng, Geology and Landforms, Vegetation, Prehistory and Histoiy.

Of the 20 walks detailed, some are local and those further afield include, for example, Ettrema and the Brogo.

Several thousand were sold and it seems that it,was a very successful publication. It is now out of print. Club activities since then have included many additional walks.

Aim To publish a new or revised edition.

Process Authority: approval to initiate this project was given in August 1995 at a CBC Committee Meeting. Subcommittee: This is being formed by Rob Horsfield. Expressions of interest are most welcome. Schedule:

Stage 1 Feb 1996 - Feb 1998. Information Gathering • existing records of walks • writing up walks • speculation about / investigation of walks • formalisation of records - locations, routes, time & distance, going, "other".

Stage 11 Decisions on content, format and presentation. This might overlap Stage I. Stage lllPublication and distribution.

Action I If you areinterested in being on the subcommittee, make contact now with

Rob Horsfield 11 Studley St., Kambah 2902 Phone: 2314535 (h)

II Please send (to the above address) anything that you think might be helpful, viz.:

• details or records of past walks • suggestions about walks (past, present or future)

- --- -A-- - III Please provide details of walks that you do over the next 24 months.

A preferred form has been inserted in this issue of IT (April 1996).

However, it's not necessary to use the form - anything more or less equivalent will help.

Thanlcing you, Rob Horsfield

Thursday 25 April - Anzac Day - Jumbuck Flat/Emu Flat - M/M A cook's tour of sub alpine valleys in one of my fivourite walking areas. Starting at Smokers Trail, see two brumby yards near Jumbuck Flat and boil a billy at Emu Flat, where the daisies and gentians should be flowering. Mostly off tracks, very light scrub. Joint walk with NPA. Map: Conn Dam 1:25 000. Leader: Murray Dow 257 4371(h) Transport: $6.

25 (Anzac Day) - 28Apr11 - Hollands Gorge - MIM-R Unlike last year's Budawangs Easter trip, I plan to spend my time in Hollands Gorge by entry from Yadboro Flat. Apart from that our resident path finder, Brian, will be absent for obvious reasons. From Yadboro Flat the route will be generally flat, up Clyde Gorge and thence Hollands Gorge. A climb will take us up to Monolith Valley via the beautiflul rainforest Angel Creek. Exit via the usual route i.e. Kaliana Ridge. Tents or flys required. Map: Budawangs CMW. Leader: Richard Bain 257 4816(h) 265 5222(w) Transport: $22

27 April - Boxvale Railway and Nattai Gorge - MIM A pleasant walk near Mittagong. Walk a triangular route from the cars to the Nattai Gorge. Then follow the Gorge for a few kms before climbing up to follow the route of the Boxvale tramway back to the ears. All on tracks, but difficult through some of the Gorge and a very steep climb out of the Gorge towards the end. 27-28 April - Monolith Valley - Shrouded Gods Mtn - M/M This enjoyable walk through the Budawangs will deliver great views in all directions. After heading up towards the Castle, which we may climb if we have time we will move across to Monoloith Valley, a valley walled by huge sandstone slabs. Shrouded Gods mountain towers above the surrounding creeks, but the view can only be seen after penetrating its scrubby defences. Map: CMW Budawangs Leader: Sybille Davidson 293 7462w or 282 4325h Transport: about $25.

Saturday 4 May - Fosters Mountain - LJM A Budawangs walk of two parts: a long fire trail bash from the locked gate accessed from Nerriga and a moderately scrubby traverse of Fosters Mountain to the South Eastern end.
