CCGC President’s Report AGM 27 September 2008

3. President’s Report “The Club has been fortunate to continue employment of professional staff and to have the services of dedicated volunteers, therefore ensuring a vigorous team community” This report it is my pleasure to reflect on two celebrations. Firstly, the Club’s inaugural Presentation Night was an enjoyable and rewarding event. The pinnacle award, the Sharp Award, was presented to Donna Hopkinson for her outstanding volunteer efforts. We hope to continue this as an annual awards night where we can bask in the many successes of our Club members.

Our other celebration was, of course, the 30th year Reunion and Birthday. Thanks to hosts Les Sharp and Dahlia Sharp, this was a lovely walk down memory lane, with many original gymnast members returning to the Club. Videos and photos continue to be archived for future enjoyment! To mark the occasion I have included Dr Sharp’s speech at the end of this report.

The Club’s other substantial achievement was to reaccredit at Club 10 National Standards Star 3 level. Thanks to Committee member Lesley Dickens for the weekends of work dedicated to completing the checklist and other policy documents. The audit report was minimal – essentially a spelling error – unheard of for what is a very comprehensive assessment. Gymnastic Results; Retirements

Club gymnasts and coaches have again enjoyed excellent participation and outcomes, both locally and interstate. Results are at the end of this report and well and truly speak for themselves. In particular, Canberra City won Second Overall Champion WAG Club Levels 4 to 10 at National Clubs Championships last December; and a Canberra City gymnast, Katrina Le, was selected to represent Australia at the Levels International Challenge earlier this month. We have Australian Representative in every team since 2002!!

The Club continues to field maximum entries in both national and state competitions. In particular, recent State Grading competitions again saw magnificent representation by record numbers of CCGC gymnasts. The Club farewelled senior gymnast, ACT Gymnast of the Year 2008 and Bars National Champion Laura Peel, on her retirement. Laura will be throwing her talents at aerial skiing much to the squad’s delight. Staff Farewell to Traci Ward (office) - November of last year. Welcome Ann Dawson – office assistant Michaela Morgan Cheerleading Coach – UK Joy Koh WAG Coach and FIG Judge – Singapore Welcome Baby Toby Joe Schumacher and we look forward to Mary Schumacher’s return after Maternity leave.

The Committee also looks forward to Coach Dmitry Berezovskiy joining the Men’s coaching team later this year/early next year. Dmitry hails from Canada and we are indeed fortunate that he is keen to join the Canberra City crew. Membership. Programs. External Programs. New Programs.

Membership numbers for 2008 are now 1127 and have again surpassed last year's high and represent a record enrolment and also record retention rates. We may attribute this to the professional, caring, coaching and office staff at the Club. Certainly MAG, WAG, State & National and KinderGym Programs are all showing strong and increasing enrolments – the Club’s challenge is to attract more coaching staff!

CCGC President’s Report AGM 27 September 2008

The Club's website, www.canberracity.org.au , promotes our profile and achievements to the wider community, as is reported on our new-enrolment forms - coming second to word-of-mouth as a way of finding /deciding on a gym club. New Programs

Gymnastics Australia’s GymMix program complements the Club’s own programs. GymMix resources are gradually being incorporated into their programs by our coaches following workshops introducing and using the resource.

Birthday Parties are now fully fledged as a program utilising all available gymnastics resources. Formal feedback has been very positive. Gymsport Programs

Cheerleading Canberra City hosted the inaugural ACT Cheerleading Championships. This event was highly successful, as were our Mayhem (POM Champs) and Chaos (Junior Level 1 Cheer Champs) teams. Ninety-three athletes participated and a couple of hundred spectators attended. Gymnastics Australia’s Nerine Cooper came down to judge at the event and was impressed at the enthusiastic uptake of the sport, CCGC being the first club to adopt Cheer.

Lucy Kobier reports: “The last twelve months have been an exciting time for the cheerleading in the ACT, particularly our squads. Michaela Morgan joined us early this year as head coach and has brought with her a wealth of experience from the United Kingdom and United States which has benefited both cheer squads. Michaela’s contribution combined with the squads hard work is reflected in the outstanding results we have achieved at competitions this year. The squad has increased in size with almost 40 cheerleaders attending regularly across our senior and junior squads. In addition to our competitions we have had the opportunity to perform at various public events around Canberra and also featured in a story on ABC’s Stateline which has received positive feedback. We are in full swing preparing for the Australian All Star Cheer and Dance Championships being held at the end of the year and are keeping busy promoting cheerleading in the ACT every opportunity we can” GymABLE, the Club's program for people with a disability, has developed strongly under Coach Mary Schumacher. Mary had five athletes participating in the SOACTR State Games event last November and four athletes in the SO Junior National Games of April this year. Mary also coordinated all aspects of the Junior National Games Gymnastics event, which was attended by Gymnastics Australia personnel.

Schools / External Programs

Programs run at Charnwood (TEAM gym), Gungahlin (CCGC-RAGE) relocated to Amaroo School for 2008, 'Majura', Miles Franklin and Lyneham. The Cook Primary program at relocated to Macquarie PS under the banner of TEAM! Aranda Primary after school classes have also continued with 23 gymnasts enrolled for term 3 just ended. It is also great to see these programs represented at the ACT Levels 1-4 Grading day. Congratulations to all coaches coordinating the satellite venues! In particular to Geoff Monro who coaches at just about all the venues. Report “Overall the primary school gymnastic classes this year have been very strong with all of the school classes showing high numbers.

Tell me there is something in the water at Charnwood, I just say well no not really they’re just a great team . On a more personal note myself , and Agnes are very grateful and appreciative of the great support the committee and Canberra City Gym Club has given us in our time of financial hardship and we are committed to serving the club and working very hard for the club’s future and ours too.

For you, for Gymnastics ; For the benefit of both. Geoff Monro.”

Community

Cheerleaders led the way with displays at Tuggeranong and Westfields as well as at World Youth Day this year. The Club itself continues to contribute to school fetes and trivia events whenever possible and to youth education, eg: supporting PCYC's KidSmart publication. We have been pleased to donate prizes to pre-school and school trivia events, eg: Majura and Aranda events. This year’s Pyjama Week (week 10 of Term 3), organised by Kindergym Coordinator and Saturday morning supervisor, Naomi Nye, raised a record $418 for the SIDS Foundation!

Within the Club, the Canberra Diving community and the Circus Space group have voiced their appreciation of being able to utilise our facilities. We have also welcomed the University of Canberra’s Teacher Education School – they have doubled their class time in the gym this semester.

Education

Congratulations to the following coaches who have qualified as Level 1 MAG or WAG coaches: Amelia James; Charlotte Churchill; Elyse Baldwin; Janine Nicholson; Keiran McNabb; Morgan Barnwell; Vanessa Elphick and Zac Streeter. The Club recognises the value of the mentoring and assistance provided by Mary Schumacher – ensuring that Canberra City’s workbooks were submitted on time. We now have a record number of Tertiary and Gymnastics Australia qualified coaching and judging staff.

This year has seen a continuation of the Club's Professional Development Workshops held, as a minimum, at the start of every term following Staff meetings. The Club values education highly and subsidises these events and other updating opportunities - mostly from funds raised through Christmas Cup, an event where coaches and judges donate their time.

CCGC President’s Report AGM 27 September 2008

Building, Infrastructure and Equipment.

Fine tuning of the extended areas of the gymnasium has continued since the 2007 AGM. Major works completed are: installation of a hydroboil in the kitchen; installation of a hot water service; installation of the ducted vacuum system (thank you Brian Hewett); decking extending from the multi-purpose room’s north exit to the pit room’s east exit (National Patios); installation of a mat curtain at the end of the tumble-tramp; installation of the five large whirly roof vents (Steadfast Structures); the kitchen Door-to-the-Deck; various equipment modifications & upgrades such as the baby beams; and R & D. Office & Administration. Communication.

With increasing staff and athlete numbers has come an increase in administration load. The office staff continue to grapple with new ways to communicate important dates, events and news to families. The A-Frame notice boards and the Plasma Screen are developing as useful communication tools.

Volunteer Efforts. Grants. Awards.

We appreciate the volunteer work of parents throughout the year with cleaning, gardening and maintenance. The Club also welcomed a member of the public who dropped in and offered his volunteer services to refurbish/replant the Clubs gardens

Volunteers and fund-raising occasions continue to contribute to the Club's physical and social well being. In particular I wish to thank the Parent Committee on donating the cost of the kitchen Door-to-Deck project as well as supporting our Australian representative athletes with their travel. Fund-raising Report Fundraising has been quiet this year, however thank you to all the parents and gymnasts who have helped and supported the fundraising activities we have had.

CCGC President’s Report AGM 27 September 2008

Sponsorship Following the takeover of Wests Rugby Club by the Canberra Southern Cross Club (CSCC) and our meeting with CSCC’s CEO, Canberra City has been offered an annual sponsorship of $2000 in the first instance. We welcome this mutually beneficial partnership and will be encouraging our members to sign up with the CSCC. Financials

We continue to improve our accounting and Human Resource management processes and follow any recommendations happily. The office now fully operates in MYOB and COMMBIZ, the Commonwealth Bank’s online business banking service, as well as through the ATO’s taxation portal. I commend Jenny Xian for her dedication to learning how to operate in these changing environments.

The Management Committee has approved an increase to professionals’ wages to somewhat keep pace with CPI and this will be applied March 2009. ACTGA Registration, Insurance and Affiliation fees are also increasing in 2009. With all utilities’ costs and usage also increasing the Committee approved a small increase in class fees to take effect Term and Quarter 4. Comparison with other states indicates that we provide services at competitive high standards and rates. Auditor

Christine Reid & Associates, appointed at our last AGM, resigned as the Club’s Auditor. The Committee appointed company auditor Mr Roy E Priest, FCPA. Christine Reid & Associates have continued to provide services for the preparation of the year end financial statements. Referring to the financial statements……

Although the operating surplus seems to have stabilised at what appears a grand amount we should note that the Committee dedicated $40000 of extra payments to the loan account to hedge the interest rate increases occurring over the last 18 months. Throughout, our Not-for-Profit charter has been a priority and the Committee has taken every opportunity to re-invest in Club infrastructure and resources for all members benefit. I am pleased to report that these measures have now reduced our Loan Liability from ~$402000 as at last AGM to $294071 today.

CCGC President’s Report AGM 27 September 2008

In conclusion….. Some new goals for the Club and its Committees include continuing the work improving the Club’s surrounds, eg: pathways, parking, deck shading, as well as considering a Building Stage 7 – some more floor space for the afternoon’s youngest athletes and for dance. In the immediate future, the new Committee may wish to consider the three grant rounds currently available to Community Organisations such as CCGC. Ongoing are the review and renewal of procedures and policies as well as the opportunity to submit an application for Star 4 Club 10 accreditation! The challenge continues to be one of maintaining what we have all worked hard to develop: a fantastic environment and culture for all levels of interest and participation in gymnastic sports. To this end we invite and welcome new faces to help us in the future

Canberra City Gymnastics Club 1978 – 2008 30 years in the Community

This year Canberra City Gymnastic Club celebrates its 30

th

Anniversary having been founded in 1978 with 10 gymnasts in Kingsley St Hall ANU. In 1985 the club gained a grant and land from the ACT government to build its own facilities in Belconnen. Since then many hundreds of gymnasts have passed through its doors. Quite a few of these gymnasts and their parents have stayed over 10 years and six have been with the club for over 20 years. Many people have helped shape Canberra City Gymnastic Club particularly through their achievements at national competitions, in coaching, in judging, in administration, and in establishing innovative programs. To mark the occasion the Club hosted a birthday party-reunion last Saturday 19

th

July. After a warm welcome by Club founder, Les Sharp, over 130 guests, some travelling interstate, enjoyed a buffet luncheon. Folk spent time viewing the large photo and timeline banners and, with gymnasts past and present, stood transfixed by the video screens (were the WAG bars ever really that close together!?). A special gold Club pin was presented to those who had been associated with the club for more than 10 years after which Club athletes provided some entertainment as they signed their image on the Club’s Australian Representatives wall mural.

Special guests included John Malouf, Sport and Recreation advisor to Grants Committee 1985; John Wolstencroft, then Secretary Sport and Recreation, David Dickson then Manager of the Bruce stadium, Gene Schembri, then Coaching Cordinator Australian Gymnastics Federation; Elana Sharp, Australian representative, World Gymnastics Championships, Budapest 1983; Genevieve Preston, Australian representative, World Gymnastics Championships, Sabae 1995 and Olympic Team Reserve 1996.

CCGC President’s Report AGM 27 September 2008

Words from Canberra City Gymnastics founder and previous Chairperson on the occasion of the Club’s 30th Year Reunion event: “When Dahlia and I visited Canberra last year and saw the building opposite being demolished, it struck us how well our Club has realy done, lasting 30 years and now stronger and larger than ever.

Then we wondered what happened to all those young gymnasts that we spent years with, some more than a decade. They would now be adults and we thought it would be fantastic to be able to meet with them and their parents after all these years, particularly on the Club’s 30th Anniversary.

So, today, that day of reunion has arrived, and we are very pleased to see how many of you have been able to attend.

Everyone here has contributed to the welfare of the Club and I would like to acknowledge that contribution.

I would first like to thank the ACT administration individuals who persuaded the ACT Government to grant us land and finance to build this centre, and to now show them that we are worthy of their confidence. I should recall the work of the initial group’s parents who constructed the gymnastic equipment and pits, and of the parents and coaches who came once a week for a whole year as general dogs bodies, to dig out the trenches, wire the reinforcing rods, remove the rubble, construct the floor, landscape and plant the trees; the parents and coaches who laid the slate and tiles, installed the heating system, did the carpentry and doors, so that we could complete the building on time.

Then when the fire charred the main hall and blew out the windows, our friends from the other Canberra Clubs came in their hundreds and cleaned the walls and removed the debris, so that we could survive. The only reminder of that is the silver paint that now covers the main hall’s interior beams.

I also welcome the present and former Australian Gymnastics Federation members who represent the wider gymnastics community of which we are part. On the walls are the images of our Australian Representatives and we will ask them to sign their images, so that our present and future Club gymnasts and their parents understand that these drawings are the Club’s gymnasts who hold a place of inspiration and honour. I have also listed the gymnastics results through the three decades as best as we could find, and these are recorded on the white standards. I should also mention that this tradition of excellence is continuing with the Club’s gymnasts who have just returned from Australian Levels Championships gaining ten medals! Lastly, I point out that there are 55 persons who have had a close affiliation of more than ten years with the Club, and 7 of whom have been with the Club over 20 years! After the buffet we shall present them with a special 10 year Club pin as a sign of the Club’s appreciation. There is no more formal business than this – I welcome you all and invite you to lunch.”
