Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI will canonize Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This is a great day for the Church in both the United States and Canada. Kateri was born in what is now called Auriesville and baptized at the Mission in Fonda. She went to Sault St. Louis, Canada, and there received her First Holy Communion. She died and was buried there. Kateri’s life is intertwined with the history of our diocese. For many decades we have prayed for her canonization. Now that it has arrived, we give thanks to our good and gracious God for this gift.

In honor of the canonization, Bishop Hubbard is leading a pil-grimage to Rome for the celebration of the canonization. Bishop Hubbard was present in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, in 1980 when, now Blessed, Pope John Paul II declared her Blessed. The Bishop participated in formally presenting the case to the Holy Father during the Beatification liturgy.

The preparations for the pilgrimage are underway. The pilgrim-age will leave Albany on Tuesday, October 16 and return on Tuesday, October 23. We spend six wonderful days in Rome, first starting off with an overnight visit to Assisi. I hope that you will consider joining the pilgrimage. Information is on the bulletin boards and there are flyers at the entrances of the church. Feel free to take one. All information concerning re-serving a place, cost, etc. is on the flyer. This should prove to be a wonderful trip and experience. I am looking forward to it and I hope that many of you can join me. Fr. Farano ***************************************************

What is the St. Pius X Parish

Pastoral Council? As stated in the council’s constitu-tion, the purpose of the council is to “…deliberate and advise the pastor in all matters pertaining to the spiritual, administrative, educa-tional, financial and social affairs of the parish”. It’s that simple.

The Parish Pastoral Council consists of 12 members who meet once a month from September to June to deliberate and confer with our Pastor regarding all matters pertaining to the affairs of our Parish. The council works collaboratively with the standing committees to develop and execute programs that address the needs of our parish.

The council oversees working committees that promote the work of the church and of the parish. That work consists of maintaining buildings and grounds, assisting people in need, providing religious education, working with our youth, planning worship services, and promoting a spirit of fellowship within the church. All parishioners are welcome to join any of the committees at any time. You do not have to be a member of the council to help with any of these committees. St. Pius does not hold elections to determine who will serve on the council. Any parishioner sixteen years of age or older can participate in a “discernment process” that is held each year in June to decide who will serve on the council. The only qualifi-cations you need to serve on the council are an interest in the parish, and a willingness to help guide the affairs of the parish. This pretty much means that YOU can serve on the parish coun-cil at St. Pius. What is a “discernment process”? Well, a common dictionary definition says that “discernment” is the ability to judge wisely and objectively. The Oxford English Dictionary adds that, in a Christian context, “discernment” is perception without judg-ment, with a view to obtaining spiritual direction and under-standing. At St. Pius, the “discernment process” is nothing more than a meeting of people who think they may be interested in joining the council. A facilitator leads the people at the meeting in prayer and discussion, after which each participant is asked to decide if they want to join the council at that time or not. Each participant makes a personal decision that is re-spected by everyone in the group. On Tuesday, May 8, after the 7:00 PM Mass in the chapel, there will be an informational meeting for all parishioners 16 years of age or older who would like to find out more about possibly discerning to become a member of the St. Pius X Parish Pas-toral Council. Parish Council Notice of Discernment: The actual discern-ment meeting will take place under the guidance of Mary Harri-son in the chapel on May 9th at 7:00 pm.

This weekend is the 2012 Bishop’s Appeal Commitment Sunday. This Appeal supports all of the vital ministries and programs throughout the Diocese of Albany. It is our one opportunity during the year to reach out in support of all the people of God beyond the boundary of our own parish (Parish name). Please respond to the Bishop’s Appeal by making a pledge that you can pay throughout the year. Your gift directly helps our parish to pay its share of the important work of the diocese. Let us strive for 100% par-ticipation: not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice!

Join Siena College students for a Bowlathon to benefit the

Saint Francis Xavier Orphanage

Proceeds will go towards providing the orphanage with two solar panels! The Bowlathon will take place on April 28th at 1:00PM at Sunset Bowling Alley at 1160 Central Avenue, Albany. The cost is $20 per person and included in the $20 is two games of Cyber Bowling, shoe rental, two slices of pizza, a soda, and MOST IMPORTANTLY a donation towards the solar panels. Mary Prayer Service: On May 6 at 9:10 am in the Parish Center, our Third Grade Classes, under the direction of their Teachers and Aides will celebrate a “Mary Prayer Service”. The third graders can wear their First Communion clothing or something nice. Re-Registrations: The children in grades K-7 brought home Re-Registration Forms for the 2012-2013 school year on March 25. Parents: Please fill out the forms and return them with the fee to your child’s Teacher by May 6. One form per family. For those students who completed the 8th grade program, information re-garding the Confirmation Program was sent home on March 25. Please do not put them on the Sunday School Registration Form. First Communion: The Results for First Communion Seating are: 9:30 Mass: whole pew =28, ½ pew =3, sitting as a group =0, A – Z =21, and Z – A =10 (31 responses). 11:30 Mass: whole pew = 39, ½ pew =3, sitting as a group = 0, A-Z =37, and Z-A = 5 (42 responses). For both First Communion Masses, all children will have a whole pew in church seated alphabetically A – Z. There are 111 children from our Parish and School who will be receiving their First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 5 at 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM. Let us keep these children and their families in our prayers as they prepare to receive Jesus who is the “Bread of Life”.

Rehearsal Dates for First Holy Communion are:

For the 9:30 am 1st Communion Mass Children: Tuesday, May 1 from 3:30 to 4:45 pm and Wed. May 2, 6:00 to 7:15 pm

For the 11:30 am 1st Communion Mass Children: Tuesday May 1 - 6:00 to 7:15 pm and Wed. May 2 - 3:30 to 4:45 pm.

Children need to attend both Rehearsals for their Mass Time. All Rehearsals are held in the Church.

He Is Real

Fundamental to us as Christians is our belief that Jesus Christ really died on the cross, that he was truly raised from the dead, and that he will return at the end of time as he promised. It is clear from today’s Gospel reading that the risen Jesus was not a disembodied spirit, or an illusion of the grief-stricken disciples. On that first Easter the disci-ples, as witnesses to Jesus’ death, were overwhelmed with joy to see him risen to new life. When Jesus appeared among them he told them he was no ghost, and to prove his reality invited them to touch his hands and feet. Then he asked for a piece of baked fish and ate it in front of them. After this reassurance Jesus went on to explain to them once more how his death and resurrection were foretold in the scriptures. At this point he did not pose complicated questions to test their understanding; instead, he gave them a task: to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins “to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem” (Acts 24:49). Stop and think. This is not “Give a few hours of your time, and we’ll consider you’ve done your part.” What Jesus was giving them was an all-consuming, life-long mission. They were his chosen followers, his disciples, but now the time for learning was over. They must become apostles, the ones sent on a mission. Every time we come together to celebrate the Eucharist, we are offered the love of God through word and sacrament. We are reminded of God’s saving deeds and wonderful promises, and we are given food for the journey. Finally, we are urged to go forth to love and serve the Lord. What mission is Christ calling you to fulfill, that only you can do?

“Caring with the Heart of Christ: Pastoral Care for those with Memory Loss”, a Bread and Soup Luncheon for Colonie Area Pas-toral Care Ministers, will be held this Thursday April 26th, 2012 from 11 AM to 1 PM in the Social Hall at Christ Our Light Church, Loudonville. The luncheon will also include a presentation by Diane Van Dusen, Manager of Clinical Dementia Services at the Eddy Alzheimer’s Services. Ms. Van Dusen participated in the Medical Mission that traveled to Ghana in 2009 to help improve the lives of memory impaired elders and their caregivers. The program is for those involved in Pastoral Care Ministry, those wishing to volunteer in this ministry and those seeking to know more. All are welcome! There is no cost. Please remember to lock your car doors before coming into Church. Most unfortunately, even with locked cars, there have been some incidents in the parking lot during Masses. Anything such as GPS systems, cell phones, i-pads, your E-Z Pass and your garage door openers should not be visible in your cars, not to mention other valuables such as wallets, purses and handbags. PASTORAL CARE “And he said to them, ‘Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jeru-salem. You are witnesses of these things.’” + Today’s responsorial psalm questions, “What can bring us happiness?” (Ps. 4) The gospel relates, following the res-urrection, numerous occasions that brought joy to the disci-ples. Jesus reveals himself unexpectedly to two travelers as they shared a meal and later to the whole group as they hud-dled in the upper room. Amidst fear, confusion, and bewil-derment Jesus appears bringing “peace” and the challenge to live as witnesses of God’s salvation. As we continue to celebrate Easter it is time to look at the way we live as a Resurrection People. Are we still weeping at the Christ’s cross or are we living as a people forgiven, and redeemed? Are we joy-filled? Do we rejoice knowing our own personal crosses will eventually pass? Have we received Christ’s peace and totally rely on and trust in our God? Christ has given us the gift! Will we reach out and accept it and live as joyful “witnesses of these things”?

St. Pius X Parishioner Bus Trip A Family Event

New York Mets vs. Colorado Rockies Thursday, August 23rd

Take your family out to a big league ballgame on the afternoon of Thursday, August 23rd at Citi Field. The Mets will be playing the Rockies at 1:05. The bus will leave promptly at 7:30 am from the St. Pius School parking lot and will re-turn at 8:00 pm.

The price for the tickets this year will be $56.00 per person. The price includes bus transportation, admission, a light breakfast and a sandwich lunch at the stadium parking lot. Bus seating is limited to and reservations will only be confirmed upon receipt of your payment. To make reservations, please call Frank and Stephanie Brennan at 452-0792. As in the past, don’t hesitate or it will be too late!

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the popularity of this event, we have been unable to include many parish families each year. "CHANGE FOR CHANGE" COIN DRIVE

We held our breaths as the weekend masses began...would peo-ple remember their "change for change" coin containers? And remember you did! All weekend long, our hearts were warmed as a steady parade of containers flowed in. In spite of leading very busy lives, you took the time to think of Haiti's poor chil-dren and in your kindness, over $27,000 was raised that directly goes to the St. Francis Xavier Haitian Orphanage. In one of the containers there was a note from the father of an eight year old who wished to give her birthday money to the children of Haiti. She expressed that they needed it more than she did.

On behalf of the St. Francis Xavier Haitian Orphanage Founda-tion, we wish to thank the St. Pius X Orphanage Committee who worked very diligently on this project. Our parishioners, reli-gious education families, St. Pius X staff, outside businesses, individuals, churches, schools and organizations all helped us to go beyond our goal. We appreciate all the families and indi-viduals that helped us with the counting along with SEFCU and Info Label who donated their services.
