BOARD BRIEFS Vance County Schools / April 2021

Board of Education Recognizes Media Specialists

The Board recognized our media specialists as part of National Library Week for their fostering of belonging and community through equity and access to all, promoting the free exchanges of ideas. The theme for National Library Week (April 4-10, 2021), “Welcome to Your Library,” promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building – and that everyone is welcome to use their services. lot and it is available for free for those in our community. Since March 5, we have only had 5 cases and all were community/family spread. We have given all staff the opportunity to be vaccinated, with 71% of our school-based staff vaccinated. Senate Bill 37 is a summer learning opportunity required by the state for all grade levels, which will require 150 hours of instruction (approx. 6 weeks). The plan will provide support for students and the district is working on a plan currently. The program is optional. Senate Bill 387 is the Excellent Public Schools Act which discusses the Science of Reading and the fundamentals that teachers must be trained on, with a focus on reading proficiency.

Our Plan B continues in grades 9-12 with two cohorts. Our grades PreK-8 began Plan A on April 12. Based on the data, we have 68% of our PreK-8 students returning to the classroom. This number continues to increase through ongoing communication with families. Dr. Jackson shared the data by grade

level and by school. We had 2,249 students present on the first day on Plan A.

Dr. Jackson shared the Class of 2021 Graduation Schedule. Each school will have a face-to-face graduation in accordance with the guidelines for gatherings on Monday, May 24. All graduations will take place on the campus of Vance County High School. The graduations will be ticketed events with masks required. The event will be abbreviated and physical distancing will take place.

Transfer Approvals

The BOE voted to approve 27 transfers into Vance County Schools and 7 transfers out. This includes 14 Student transfers into Vance County for 2020-2021 and 13 transfers into Vance County for 2021-2022. The 7 transfer outs are for 2021-2022.

Installment Pay Change

Due to changes at the state level, installment pay will no longer be available for 10-month employees. There are currently 229 10-month employees currently on the installment plan. This change allows the employee to earn the interest on their money rather than the state. Information will be shared with those employees in the near future.
