I think Spring may have finally arrived, which is especially good news to the gardeners and the golfers just itching to start the 2017 season. No doubt, all are glad to see the sun and some warmer temperatures. Everyone should now have received the email from VP, Laura Hare regarding decisions to be made at this year's Annual Meeting of CFUW National. I hope that you will take the time to peruse this document in order to help our club come to a majority decision regarding the future of GWI (Graduate Women International) and a proposed increase to our dues. This decision will definitely affect how we move forward as a club, so it behooves us to ponder it carefully.

The Rhythmobile, this year's family concert was a great hit. Thanks to Pat McLaughlin and Elizabeth Ewashkiw and their team for once again putting on a first class event for the younger generation in our community. I am also thrilled to let you know that Pat and Elizabeth have agreed to continue to co-chair this event for another year. We all appreciate not only their leadership and expertise, but the assurance that this very worthwhile event will continue.

And what about this year's Spring Forum?! The accolades are still flowing after this very successful event. I heard several members say that they had some reservations about attending, but those doubts were all dispelled by what turned out to be a truly thought provoking and meaningful morning. Thank you to the committee of Marilyn Jackson, Kay Manderville, Carroll Hennessy and Mary E. Miller. Your ability "to think outside the box" and create a new concept for the Spring Forum worked perfectly.

Our Annual General meeting and dinner is fast approaching. Pauline Lingard and Susan Frizzell, our special events coordinators have chosen a new venue for us, Huff Estates Winery. The owners have suggested that we need 65 in attendance. With this in mind, I hope you will plan to attend and join in what traditionally has been a most memorable evening. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Finally, the executive has chosen to nominate Marylea Burtt and Kay Manderville for the 2019 Notable Women Awards. Quite frankly, all members of our club are notable and deserving of this award! However, our club was limited to two nominations and we felt that we should not let the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of these two women pass us by. Thanks to Kay and Marylea for accepting the nomination and we sincerely hope they will be chosen as recipients of this award.

PAST PRESIDENT’S AGM Governance Report April 2017: Lenore Begley

The Governance Committee of Carol Sayeau, Marylea Burtt and Chair, Lenore Begley met over the course of the past year. I want to thank my Committee Members for their time and expertise. It was a pleasure to work with them.

The following Motion is presented to the membership for their decision. Motion Article 111.61: (To be added)

When a situation arises when the Executive needs to make an immediate decision before the next scheduled Executive meeting, the Executive will be polled electronically. The Recording Secretary receives the responses, records the votes, reports the results of the polled issue to the Executive and prints a copy of her report for filing. The decision requires quorum.

Pg. 5 Voting Rights

Rationale: A proposal for a Constitutional change was made at the request of the executive to accommodate the need for a rapid response to a particular situation.

According to our constitution (Article IV), additions or amendments can only be made at The Annual Meeting. Once the executive approves a change, it is then presented to The Club at a regular meeting prior to the Annual Meeting.

FINANCE REPORT : Mary Milne, VP Finance The financial statement to March 31, 2017 is included for your information with the addition of the proposed budget for next year. Please review the information so you can ask any questions at the April meeting. Also in the newsletter for you to review are some proposed changes to the Bylaws re our Investment Policy.

Proposed Bylaw Amendments – from Finance Committee Meeting Mar. 30, 2017

1. Because of a concern that the Scholarship Treasurer could make financial investment decisions alone, we propose the following Amendment to the Bylaws by an addition to Article III (Officers), Section 9 (Scholarship Fund Treasurer) to add point “l”:

Have all equity decisions require written approval by the Finance Committee. This could include committee minutes or group emails.

2. Given that interest rates on GIC’s remain low and that we have an updated copy of the National CFUW Charitable Trust Fund investment guidelines that increases the amount which can be invested in dividend paying stocks, we are proposing to increase the percentage in our Asset Mix Policy from 25% to 35% for such stocks and decrease the percentage for debt securities from 70% to 60%.

And a substitution to Article XI (Investment Policy) 1 c. (5) Asset Mix Policy of the following 35% dividend-paying stocks (range 25-45%) 60% debt securities (range 50-70%) 5% cash (range 0-15%)

This policy brings us closer to the CFUW National Charitable Trust Guidelines.

Note: The changes are shown in bold print.

PLANNNING and DEVELOPMENT REPORT: Jane Taylor, VP Planning and Development

The second book sale of the year will be held at the April general meeting. Please bring your surplus novels and bring your change to purchase replacements. All proceeds go to the general fund for club activities.

Spring Forum Report On April 1, our Club hosted over 100 participants in a forum on the topic “Empowering Young Women: A Community Vision” The Steering Committee believes it can state this was an unqualified success. Dona Knudsen gave opening words which highlighted the connection between CFUW and the empowerment of women; she also spoke to the participants of the commitment of CFUW members to sharing their skills in the community. These words were a powerful introduction of CFUW to a group of women many of whom did not recognize the CFUW at all. Dona was followed by two speakers who have a depth of personal and professional experience working with young women: Mary Mask, Executive Director of Abigail’s Learning Centre; and Julie Sweeney, SSW, who manages a local program for Girls Inc. and also does private counselling with young women. Following the speakers, small group discussions allowed participants to talk about the issues and hear from the young women themselves. Recorders kept notes on significant points arising in the discussions. Some of the immediate outcomes of the event include:

two new members of CFUW because of profile-building three further participants showing interest connection with potential collaborators in “empowering young women” networking across many professions and age groups expanded perspective on education for young women in our community - invitations for CFUW to visit/speak at some programs CFUW members excited about potential speakers/topics for our general programs drawn from what came out of the small group - some participants were making private arrangements to

offer time/skills to the agencies and much more Almost all the participants asked to receive our Club’s “summary report”, which is a work in progress. All were anxious to confer on some “next steps”. There will be a fuller newsletter article available for May.

SCHOLARSHIP REPORT: Laura Hare, VP Scholarships

Schools have been reminded that due date to the Board Office is Wednesday, April 26.  Committee is meeting on Friday, April 28 to review applications for eligibility.  Laura will assign interview times and send them to schools that same day.

Interviews are scheduled for Monday to Wednesday, May 1, 2 ,3 at St. Mathews United Church, 4 pm – 10 pm.  We are looking for volunteers to be greeters for 2 hour shifts each day.  Please advise Janet MacDonald if you are willing to greet the students.

Town and Country Garden Tour Committee Update : Irene Hiebert and Karen Mouck Co-Chairs

Drum roll, please! The Sponsorship Team of the Garden Tour Committee has again worked their magic:  the total record-breaking amount raised in sponsorships stands at $7000, plus 27 items for the Raffle Table valued at more than $2200. What an achievement!Kudos and thanks go out to Barbara Durnford, Barbara Pipher, Jane Anderson, Janet Simpson-Lightbody, and Mary E. Miller, with special mention going out to Linda Richardson, Karen Mouck, Irene Hiebert  and Evelyn Neumann.  Excellent work everyone!Carol Sayeau is hard at work designing our tickets, map and promotional materials. Garden Tour tickets will be available by May 1, at a cost of $25 each. If you wish to make a purchase for Mother's Day, please contact Kimm Leeman, our new Ticket Distribution person. It would be amazing if each Club member were able to sell 3 or 4 tickets. We are hoping that you will be inspired by the work being done by the various Committee members and that you will plan to make your own contribution. Plan to volunteer on Tour day and  plan to purchase tickets. Your efforts will help to make this fundraiser, in support of the Scholarship Fund, a real success.  Here are excerpts from two more garden descriptions: Garden 1: Along the shrub-lined driveway you will see a row of shrubs starting with a spiral boxwood followed by cedars, hydrangea trees, nesting cypress, burning bushes, box woods and several hostas. The perennial rockery with our majestic flag of Canada at its centre lies further on.  Daisies, rudbeckia, phlox, delphiniums, dahlias serve as an attraction to bees, birds and butterflies.Walking further north, you will see the “Hosta La Vista” garden which runs along the east side of the yard.  As

well as enjoying the hostas, be sure to note the birdhouse tree and the many creatures peeking out along the way.  A stepping stone pathway highlights another garden with an ornate birdbath at its centre where several species of birds flit and frolic. Garden 2: As you come down the driveway, the garden to your left has diamond hydrangeas – a favourite of monarch butterflies, false dragon-head flowers, red cana lilies, red cone flowers and many more. The garden on our right is a display of weeping cypress, Platycodon blue balloon flowers, purple cone flowers, brilliant red cardinal flowers and summer hydrangeas.Follow the path down to the Bay and you will see our hostas garden with Big Daddy, Abiqua Moonbeam, Princess Diana Remembered, Kross Regal and more.Relaxing on our dock, we often see swans, blue herons fishing the shore, Canada geese and mallard ducks with their young.

Family Concert 2017 Report : Co-Conveners Elizabeth Ewashkiw and Patricia McLaughlin

The Great Rhythmobile AdventureOn Saturday, March 18, 2017, the last Saturday of March break, CFUW featured its 2017 Family Concerts. We had a SELL OUT show at the John M. Parrott Gallery, Belleville Public Library at 11:00am and an 80% capacity audience at 1:30pm. Once again, our performances featured multi-talented percussionists Bruno Roy and Marton Maderspach, from Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JMC). They pour themselves 150% into their shows and seem to love doing so – they have a great sense of fun and the audience – the young and not-so-young, gave the shows great reviews.

We thank our club members who so enthusiastically helped us on concert day: Carol Sayeau (with her camera!), Jess Chambers, Linda Connelly, Caroll Hennessy, Kimm Leeman, Val Poultney, Sandi Repic, Linda Richardson, Diane Sule, Margaret Hare, Susanne Koehler, Min Lam-Scott, Carolyn Cockerline, Karen Mouck, Susan Walker and Cathy Warren; and Mary Milne, Katrina Cross, Sylvia Doyle and Penny Hendricks for their behind the scenes assistance; and, all club members who helped us by buying tickets, attending the show, and/or helping us market the event by distributing flyers and sharing on social media. This year it really felt like our event was

known to the community. THANK YOU.We are also so appreciative to our event sponsors: Proctor & Gamble ($500), Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario ($100), and McDonald’s Restaurants/Bob & Sylvia Doyle which once again provided all the refreshments for both shows. We are also thrilled with the donations by Susan Walker ($200) and Michael Moffat ($300) from RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Even with all this generous support, and good ticket sales, our Family Concerts lose moneyIn our effort to improve the financial outcomes, this year we wrote and submitted applications for additional financial assistance - to the Rotary Club of Belleville and District, the Lion’s Club of Belleville; and the Parrott Foundation; this week we will be submitting an application to the City of Belleville’s Arts and Culture Fund. To date, we have received no additional monies. The 2017 – 2018 JMC Concerts brochure was received this week, so while we wrap up the 2017 event we are already beginning our work for next year. . .

This year we distributed an Evaluation Survey at our concerts and collected 63 completed forms. We got lots of input - and 23 email addresses from families who would like to be contacted when next year’s concert details are known. Great momentum. . . We even got this type of feedback from the young children in attendance. . . In wrapping up, we would welcome input from the club membership and/or executive regarding the status of our Family Concerts – we seem to need more sponsorships, or to increase the ticket price, to choose a cheaper production group, or to choose a venue that can accommodate bigger audience numbers (a decision we have avoided given our wonderful partnership with the Belleville Public Library). We welcome input. . . Respectfully submitted, Elizabeth Ewashkiw and Patricia McLaughlinCFUW 2017 Family Concert Co-Conveners

INTEREST GROUPS:

The CanLit Dinner group will be meeting on May 4th at Waring House in Picton. We will be discussing the book Eulogy by Ken Murray. We are pleased to have the author coming to join us to lead our discussion. Social time begins at 5:30 pm with dinner served at 6 pm.

Club Vision to Action: Marilyn Jackson

The group continues to address electoral reform, proposed change to criminal law to acknowledge Non-State Torture, and water issues. Notably, the Spring Forum meeting offered chilled water in jugs to the 100 participants, rather than bottled water. The Garden Tour will offer ticket holders the option of filling their own bottles when they pick up their lunches; there will also be a small number of refillable bottles made available to ticket holders, supplied through $50 in general CFUW funds committed at the March Executive meeting. Bottled water will also be available. The reaction/uptake will be observed to guide approach next year. Vision to Action will begin to post “information bites” under the Education and Advocacy Tab on our website. These will illustrate some of the subjects that Vision to Action is looking at.

Vision to Action meetings continue to be held monthly on the fourth Friday. The next is Friday April 28, and will be held at noon hour at the home of Anne Cunningham, Apt 401, 334 Dundas St East, Belleville.

Table-hoppers: Margaret Hare

Table hoppers will meet at The Beaufort Pub, 173 Dundas Street East, Belleville, at 12 noon on April 19th. Please contact Marylea Burtt, 613-966-1327 or Margaret Hare, 613-967-2472 by April 17th if you plan to attend.
