This year, the iReady Students had their tuition and books paid for by the federally

funded University of Hawaii P-20 initiative… the students got their college credits for

free!!! The iReady program is an excellent way for students to become familiar with the rigor

of college level work, college requirements, and most importantly, deadlines that the professor

establishes. The iReady class provides the student face-to-face support and computer access to

complete the college course assignments during the school day on the Leilehua school campus.

Based on information from our former iReady students, all college credits earned through the

iReady class were accepted to the colleges they are currently attending, both local and mainland

schools.

PTSO News……… PTSO would like to take time out to thank all the families who helped make our

year a great one!!! PTSO was very busy in April and May getting ready for the

end of the year.

PTSO had a McDonald’s Night on April 25th. We would like to thank all who came

out and supported us and to all who came out and volunteered their time to

make it a successful night. We would also like to thank LHSSA for making the

awesome signs!!!We DID make out goal

PTSO was able to provide three scholarships again this year, The Mighty Mule

worth $1000.00, awarded to Paulina Reyes. The Minehira worth $500.00, awarded

to Ethan Toriki, and the PTSO scholarship worth $500.00 awarded to Kelly Jonas.

Congratulations to all for setting such great examples to your peers. These

scholarships were awarded to the recipients at the Convocation Ceremony held

on May 4.

PTSO/PCNC along with many wonderful parents and businesses in the

community were able to give our teachers a fabulous luncheon during Teacher

Appreciation week.

PTSO would like to expand what we do at Leilehua but we need your help as

parents, students and teachers. If you are interested in helping, becoming a

member, or just donating to a good cause, please contact Karl Spix.

HAWAII HIGH SCHOOL AUTO ACADEMY

The Hawaiʻ i High School Auto Academy targets high school students interested in the automotive

industry in which they participate in an unpaid internship at a Cutter dealership in the mornings, then

attend classes at Honolulu CC in the afternoon, five days a week for six weeks to total 120 classroom

hours. Upon successful completion of the program the students will receive four college credits

towards an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Automotive Technology.

The innovative summer program began as a collaborative partnership between Honolulu Community

College, First Hawaiian Bank, Waipahu High School and the Cutter Automotive Group in response to a

shortage of trained workers in the automotive technology industry.

Since the program’s inception in 2004, the bank has contributed over $125,000, which covers the cost

of tuition, tools and supplies.

Summer Engineering Academy

Summer Engineering Academy, or SEA, is an intensive summer program that offers the student the

opportunity to learn, to think, and problem-solve like an engineer. Students will apply their knowledge

of math and science to practical projects, and see concepts they learned in high school classrooms

come alive. Through lab work, group projects, lectures and assignments, you'll learn how engineers

approach real-world problems. The students will meet other students with similar interests and

collaborate on testing theories and find solutions to engineering problems.

We are currently planning to explore the engineering fields related to micro-robotics,microprocessor

programing, and 3-D printing. All these engineering disciplines just so that we can create micro-robots that

will be competing with others for a robotics competition. You will have to design, build and program a micro-

bot that is 1 cubic centimeter, and a 1 cubic inch maze solving robot.

Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Product Engineering, Mechatronics, are the primary

engineering fields that will be explored. Ever wonder how they made that thing move, or how they fit

everything into that small a body? That is what engineering is all about. Engineers make things work and fit

where they need to go.

As students complete SEA projects on materials, structures, chemical processes, circuit design, computer

programming, robotics, and other topics, they will gain insights into which engineering fields best match

their abilities and interests. These modules will be two weeks in length and 4 hours long each day. Students

will rotate through each module.

Students will also take a college success class to prepare them for entry into the University

System. This class is designed to orient students to the college setting. Students will be able to identify

campus resources, demonstrate knowledge of

c o l l e g e procedures, discuss definition of success and evaluate their important life roles. Students will

attend this course during the 3rd week of the program.

Prerequisites are completion of geometry, completion of physics, or chemistry or biology and basic

computer skills.

SUMMER

ENGINEERING

ACADEMY

Imagine you are Matt Damon in "The Martian," trapped on Mars with no way home -- or a member of Apollo 13, scrambling to save your crew with only the scant materials on board the ship. These are the kinds of almost-impossible tasks engineers have to deal with every day. Through this course, you will learn how to tackle that kind of problem solving, as well as the basics of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Programming, including electronics, prototyping, writing code and more as you explore what makes the world around you move and function.
