HAPPINESS AT ALSI

HAPPINESS at ALSIby Sharon Marotte

March 8, 2015 was a nice day for our ALSI meeting – sure were a lot of green colored clothes & hats to help celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Players around the village were: Bran-del – Howard Kantorowski, Crider –Laura Guerrero. Jack Marotte set up the sound system & Bill Barr was the MC for the day. Gordon Kohl was at the Texas NAA Accordion Convention so he wasn’t able to be with us.

Al Piselli, with his green hat, was the mystery player for the day. Some of his songs were: Fly Me to the Moon, When I’m 64, Santa Lucia and many more. We enjoyed hearing this guy play his songs!! Great job!

The first players of the day were Erika Baier & Sharon Marotte. Their duet pieces were Irish French songs: Si Petite & La Reine de Paris. Their songs were sweet with pretty melodies.

Next to play was Howard Kantor-owski. He played jigs & reels: Pet of the Pipers/Smash the Windows & Humours of Westport/Mason’s Apron. He also played the Rose of Tralee. He showed us his IPAD where he has downloaded 4000 songs. Very easy to transport & you don’t have to lug heavy books. We en-joyed having Howard come to play at ALSI. He is a great player and a nice guy besides.

Our next duet couple played their Roland electronic accordions, Ken Powers & Linda Hibbert. Their songs were: Auf’n Tanzboden & Auf Zum Tanz. They played very well together and sounded good!!!

Juergen Rosenfeld was our last player of the day. His songs were: I Love Paris -sung in German, Moulin Rouge and Edel-

weiss – many of us sang along. Juergen & Hildegard were dressed in nice attire, typical of Germany. St Patricks Day is not celebrated much in Germany.

We had our cake/ice cream/coffee break early. Jane Ford had all kinds of green deco-rations on the tables, Lois Lahoud & Janeserved cake, Al Piselli & Vicki Call helped dish out two different kinds of ice cream. The cake was furnished by Vicki Eriqat in honor of March birthdays: Chuck Fabatz, Marian Sowell & Vicki Eriqat.

The ALSI Ensemble had set up during the break and were ready to play. Vicki Eriqatwas the director, Lois Lahoud on percus-sions, Jim Kilduff was on drums. The Ensem-ble was dressed in any kind of green clothes. Their songs with many sing a long songs were: When Irish Eyes Were Smiling, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Cherry Pink & Apple Blos-som White, My Wild Irish Rose, Blue Tango, April Showers, Life in the Finnish Woods, Sweet Rosie O’Grady, Tango De La Gelosia, Kerry Dance (with actions to go with music), New York-New York, Sweet Little Girl Polka, Mack the Knife. We also got to play our ex-tras songs: Beer Barrel, Tic Tock Polka & Blue Skirt Waltz. We had lots of players and lots of time to play the entire play list!!!!!

We had a Jam Session following so many folks stayed for that. It was led by Bob Page& included 6 Irish songs, mostly jigs. We would start each song slow, Bob would give ideas for embellishing and it worked out pretty good. The songs were: My Wild Irish Rose, Haste to the Wedding, Irish Rover, Kerry Dance, Irish Washer Woman, & Garry Owen. Most of the songs were in 6/8 time so it was a trick to stay together. Good Job, Bob!!! —

Break

Joe’s first love was the accordion. This was out of all the instruments in the world and it still is to this day. He grew up in downtown San Diego in the “Little Italy” neighborhood. He started taking lessons on the accordion at the young age of 12. His first accordion was a 12 bass Hohner loaned to him by a friend of his father. It was passed down to his young-er brother Vito who stills plays it to this day. His teacher at the time was Charles Bertoli-no who came to his home for the lessons. That didn’t last long so he had to ride buses to his lessons at Bertolino’s Studio in the East County. Joe studied under him for about four years. When he turned 16 and was able to drive, Mr. Bertolino offered him the job of teaching accordion after school and on Saturdays. After High School, Joe joined the U.S. Air Force and traveled the world playing his accordion at U.S.O. shows, military clubs and oth-er venues. Today, he still is very active playing the accordion at various functions in the area and at the ALSI meetings. His heart felt thanks goes out to the ALSI club for all the great music and fellowship that the club has shared with him and his family. The experience over the years has been very rewarding to him and helped to keep him active with the in-strument. His program next month will include Italian, French and modern arrangements for the accordion which should reach out to all the fans of the instrument. —

WORKSHOP MUSIC FOR MAY

This arrangement by Frank Marocco will be used in the jazz improvisation workshop in May. Those in-terested in attending this session should study this piece and practice playing both hands together at a moderate tempo. Note the fingering for the left hand. (This should help with some of the stretch reaches such as C with E minor and then A with C major combinations. Both do not use the counter-bass.) It would also be good to study and learn the basic chords on the right hand melody. (The chord structures are explained on pages 2-4 on the handout that was issued at the last Marocco workshop for the sample key of C). This will help you get more benefit from the workshop. experience. —

NAA Accordion Convention (by Ted Hill)The 28th National Accordion convention held in Dallas March 5th-7th was very good with plenty of things to do for all level of play-ers. It was a very sociable and relaxed con-vention. There was ample time for socializ-ing with fellow accordionist and several rooms to play the accordion. There was also rooms set up for shopping for accordions, music and knickknacks. Mario Pedone, Nick Ballarini and Gordon hosted some of them.

I enjoyed the room set up by Shelia Lee. It specialized in Palmer Hughes material for beginners which I enjoyed because they

are easy to play. More serious players went to a small stage room for 15 minutes of fame. The Hotel lounge also hosted professional players like Tony Levelo during the off times.

Many attendees joined one of the two or-chestra (fun time and higher level) and gave live-ly performances on one of the concert nights. The other concert night featured invited players like Gordon and Stas. Besides the two concert nights there was a polka dance night and folk dance party.

Besides the fun stuff, there were many workshops to choose from. I went to the play-ing Balkan music, bellow shake (by Stas) and a how to yodel classes and of course Gordon’s duet class. Even with a special snow storm it was an all around good trip. —

Doris MazanekDoris Mazanek passed away peacefully on January 30, 2015. She was born on May 19, 1916 in Long Island, NY and has lived at The Springs of El Cajon

since 2007. Her close com-panion was Gordon Ny-haus who lived at the Springs of El Cajon. Both of them were members of ALSI where Gordon played his guitar and button box for us. Doris did not play the accordion but her hus-band Frank Mazanek did.

A Memorial Service was held on Feb.25,2015 at the Springs of El Cajon. Eri-ka Baier, Sharon Marotte and Gloria Ensign played a few of her favorite songs for it. Her 3 neph-ews spoke about her influence in their lives and Gloria told them about her life with Frank and Gor-don and the importance of the accordion for them.

She always looked so pleased to see us as we played the accordion there twice a month as the Friday Group. Her favorites were the Beer Barrel Polka and Blue Skirt Waltz.

She will be missed by all of us.
