Feeder Calf Project

This project consists of steers and heifers that weigh between 300 lbs. and 700 lbs. at fair time.

The animal must be weaned which makes this project different than bucket bottle. Animals

must be in the exhibitors possession before May 15th. This year families can stop in at the

office to purchase tags, $2 a piece, and when dropping off the livestock entry forms a picture of the animal with the

tag in its ear must be included. Feeder calves are not sold at the livestock auction. Contact the office if there are

questions.

Sheep Goat Weigh-In

The pre-fair goat wether and market sheep weigh-in will be held on Saturday, April 26th at the Buchanan County

Fairgrounds in the Black Pavilion. The goats will be weighed in between 8:00 am-9:00 am and the sheep will be weighed between

9:00 am-11:00 am. Tags will cost $1 each. A goat/sheep clinic will follow immediately after weigh-ins. It is up to the exhibitor if

wanting to attend this clinic. Anyone interested in identifying goats or sheep for the State Fair and/or Ak-sar-ben will need to

contact our office. State Fair weigh-ins will be held at the Hawkeye Community College Farm in Waterloo on May 3rd 9:00 am-

10:00 am. Paperwork needs to be done in advance, contact the office to get this completed.

Single Source Sheep Project

The Single Source Sheep Project is an opportunity for 4-H and FFA members to gain valuable experience in raising sheep through a

partnership with local producers. Members will be able to purchase lambs at a fair price. All lambs for this project will be sold to

members from a pre-determined producer so that all of the sheep have the same genetics.

Enrollment Process

1. Interested members will need to complete the Single Source Sheep Project entry form. The entry form must be turned in by

April 22, to our office. Payment is due when the animals are weighed at the pre-fair weigh-in on April 26th.

2. Members have the option of purchasing 1 or 2 lambs (lambs will weigh between 60-80 lbs.).

3. The purchase price of the animals will be determined by averaging the value of lambs using reputable market prices. Prices

will be announced as a per pound amount and the total value of the animals will be determined at the weigh-in by multiplying

the beginning weight by the purchase price.

Pick-Up Process

1. The Single Source Sheep will be weighed and ear tagged prior to the sheep weigh-in on April 26, beginning at 9:00 am.

2. Participants must pick up their lambs prior to 10:30 am on Saturday, April 26 at the Buchanan County Fairgrounds.

3. Upon arrival, participants will draw numbers out of a bucket. The numbers correspond with the ear tag numbers on the lambs.

This will ensure that the animals are selected at random.

4. Paperwork will be given to the participants to track the expenses and care of the sheep.

5. The Sheep Committee recognizes that there may be participants who have never raised sheep at home before. Therefore,

there will be authorized mentors available for anyone who needs assistance.

Participants will need to contact our office in order to have a mentor assigned to them. The committee and

mentors will not be responsible for the prevention of illness or death of the animals.

Single Source Sheep Project Entry Form

Return this form to the Extension Office by April 22. Payment is due at weigh-in.

FSQA – Mandatory Training and Testing

FSQA

From the State 4-H Office—In today's world, food safety is one of animal producers' biggest

responsibilities. With over 15,000 Iowa 4-H'ers enrolled in livestock projects, about 17 million pounds of

meat is produced each year. The goal of this program is to help youth and their parents better understand

what they can do to produce the safest food possible.

So what does FSQA mean??? It stands for Food Safety Quality Assurance and is for those members who

show species for both the county fair and state fair. These include: market and breeding beef, swine, sheep

and dairy (both dairy cattle and dairy goat), meat goat, rabbit and poultry. This is a great way to teach 4-

H’ers about record keeping, veterinarian and drug usage in project livestock, healthy production practices,

care and handling, feed and feed additives, and biosecurity and ethics.

This year FSQA is mandatory for all youth 4th-12th graders that are showing those specific species above for

the county and state fair. Youth will need to go through the training or take the test, all at no cost. The

training is a two hour long workshop that includes different stations for youth to participate in. All

workshops will take place at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, where

training will be facilitated by those who are FSQA certified. Each youth who

participate in the workshop will need to do it once every year. Those that can

take the test, begin in 7th grade but will not have to take the test every year. If

planning to take the exam call the Extension Office. It can be taken at one of the

dates below at Hawkeye Community College or by appointment at our office.

Youth can take the exam three times in one setting. If not passed they can take it at a later date. Call today

to take the test! Below are the dates of the workshops where you only have to attend one. RSVP at least

two days prior to the event.:

Monday, April 7th, 2014 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

If you can’t make it to the last training there are other options. Contact the Extension Office.

For more information about FSQA you can go to

http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock .

Contact the Extension Office for more questions and details.

Space is limited!

Please RSVP prior to the event to:

2014 Buchanan County Fair Dates: July 16-19

Camera Project: This project encourages members to submit developed 4x6 photographs by June 2nd to the

Extension Office. You do not have to be enrolled in photography to enter (this is not the photography contest and no

ribbons or awards will be given). This year there is no theme. We want to see your photographs of anything you

would like to snap. Photographs will be displayed at the Buchanan County Fair and judged by the general public. The

top 12 photographs will be enlarged and displayed at our office in the front lobby. Your name and club name will be

displayed on the photo. As time goes by we will try to display as many of the other photographs as possible

throughout the year.

Challenges: Are you creative or like to make things with your hands? Well the duct tape and cupcake challenges

are still on for this year! If you have a knack for creating items with duct tape or like being in the kitchen baking and

decorating cupcakes, this challenge is for you! For more detailed information about these two challenges, check out

the Buchanan County 4-H website. www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/4h

Fair Book Update and Forms:

The 2014 fair book will be up online April 15th. DO NOT USE THE 2013 FAIR BOOK WHEN DOING LIVESTOCK ENTRIES.

Numbers have changed from last year and will be updated. Changes have been made throughout the book so please

be aware of them and read closely. If there are questions, contact our office.

Livestock Entry Forms

These forms will be available on the Buchanan County 4-H webpage April 15th. Website:

http://extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/4h. Instructions of how to fill out a livestock entry form will also be online to

help guide families through the process of how to complete it. If there are any questions or concerns, call the

Extension Office to receive help. Entries cannot be emailed. They need to be dropped off or sent to the Extension

Office by May 15th along with your payment. Our office is not responsible for any forms that are not received. If you

are unsure if your forms have been received, please contact the office before the May 15th deadline. It is better to

call than to assume your paperwork has been turned in and find out at county fair that it wasn’t.

Building Entry Forms

These forms will be available on the 4-H Webpage. This needs to be turned in at the county fair when you arrive with

your exhibits. Contact our office if there are any questions about the process.

State Fair Entries:

If planning on taking animals to the State Fair, you will need to log onto your 4hOnline account. Web address:

www.ia.4honline.com. If you have forgotten your user name and password contact Alexia. On 4hOnline you will

need to enter in each animal you plan on taking. There is a help sheet made available on the 4-H webpage. Follow

those steps to register any animals that were not identified at a local or regional weigh-in site. IMPORTANT: All

animal ID’s must be submitted no later than May 15th, 11:59 pm. The website closes at 12:00 am and you will not be

able to enter your information. For questions contact the office.

4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign

The 2013-14 State 4-H Council is putting the finishing touches on this year’s campaign. Their goal is to raise

$26,513.14 for projects and programs that will benefit a number of 4-H’ers statewide. One campaign

project is raising support to finish building a tornado safe room at the Iowa 4-H Center. A letter for club

leaders will be available very soon!

Why support this campaign? Approximately one-third of the funds support the State 4-H Council program,

which in turn provides the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference experience for your 8-12th grade 4-H’ers. Almost

half of the funds are distributed back to 4-H members in the counties in the form of scholarships for out-of-

county 4-H experiences and financial assistance to help cover program development fee costs.

Club donation forms and contributions can be sent directly to the Iowa 4-H Foundation or delivered to

county offices by May 15. The form can be found at this link https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org/

Horse Meeting For all the 4-H and FFA members who have an interest in the horse project area, the horse committee would

like to invite you to a meeting that will help you complete livestock entry forms and answer any questions

you may have. This meeting will be held at the Heartland Acres Theater Room beginning at 6:00 pm on May

5th and this does not count as a clinic. Horse Clinics Dates: June 3, 11,19, 23 on fairgrounds horse arena

Step Camps

Outdoor Adventures Program The Outdoor Adventures Program, (OAP) sponsored by the Buchanan County Conservation Board and Buchanan County ISU Extension and Outreach, gives youth the opportunity to learn valuable outdoor skills and experience the outdoors in a new exciting way. Participants will enjoy the outdoors by being in contact with nature for an extended period of time. They will learn the techniques necessary to make such an experience enjoyable without harming the land. There are three steps in the OAP. Step One: Fontana Campout (July 24-25) Campers learn the basics of making camp, cooking in the outdoors, campground safety, knowing their surroundings, and wilderness etiquette while camping at Fontana Park. Step One is open to youth entering grades 7-12. Call 319-636-2617 to register. Step Two: Hiking Adventure (August 7-8) Participants exert themselves and use the techniques they have learned during the Fontana Campout as they hike and camp Yellow River State Park. Step Two is open to youth who have completed the Fontana Campout. Call 319-636-2617 to register.
