Hockey NSW President’s Welcome Message

I would like to welcome players, parents, umpires, officials and hockey lovers to the 2021 Regional Challenge. I’d like to thank our terrific hosts Tamworth Hockey Association, their committee and all of the volunteers who I know have been busily preparing for this weekend for quite some time. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Thanks also to Tamworth Regional Council for their continued investment and support of hockey in NSW. Considered the official conclusion of the Centre of Development (COD) program and the unofficial beginning of the field hockey season, the Regional Challenge is a great development opportunity for all participants. It’s also an opportunity to proudly represent your home region and demonstrate all you have learned over the course of the COD in front of friends and family. I encourage all of you to embrace the opportunity to test yourself against the State’s most talented young players and take the time to enjoy the social aspect of the event. In particular, I encourage you to get out and explore this great area of the state. Throughout this weekend, please ensure you remain COVID safe and abide by all proto-cols and guidelines put in place by the venue and NSW Government. It’s important that we keep not only ourselves, but the local community healthy and happy. Make sure to socially distance, abide by your allocated time slots, check in and out via QR code and maintain good hygiene practices like washing your hands and covering your mouth. Most importantly, if you feel unwell or have any flu like symptoms, stay away from the fields. THA PRESIDENT WELCOME

The Tamworth Hockey Association welcomes all players, officials and spectators to the Tamworth Hockey Complex for the 2021 Hockey NSW Regional Challenge. We hope that all the athletes, coaches and umpires have a great tournament and that the spectators enjoy watching the best junior talent that NSW has to offer. Everything has been done to make this a COVID safe event while still allowing as “normal” a tourna-ment experience as possible. Tamworth Hockey Association are very proud of our newly upgraded complex with 2 FIH Global status and 1 National Status synthetic pitches. The upgrades to the hockey complex have been made possible with the support of Tamworth Regional Council, the NSW State Government and also Hockey NSW. We hope that the Regional Challenge will be the first of many high level tournaments to be held at the Tamworth Hockey Complex. Please enjoy your visit while attending our complex, I am sure you will have a fantastic time. While you are in Tamworth please explore the area and visit our many shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs. Above all else, enjoy the weekend and the ability to play in such a great tournament. - Performance of athlete at CoD Regional sessions The athletes are chosen in consultation with, Volunteer Coaches, the Regional

Participation Co-ordinator & the Hockey NSW Pathway Manager

Each Region will have 4 recipients. One from the: U13 Girls, U13 Boys, U15 Girls & U15 Boys

Regional Challenge Umpires Award

- Citizenship displayed - The umpires are chosen in consultation with, Volunteer Coaches, the

Regional Coaching Coordinator & the Hockey NSW Umpire Manager

We will have 4 recipients. One from the: - U13 Girls, U13 Boys, U15 Girls & U15 Boys

Ambassadors Pride Players Alice Arnott and Ash Thomas will be attending the Regional

Challenge as Ambassadors for the event. Please look about for Alice and Ash during the weekend.

Presentations

At the conclusion of each draw block on the Sunday morning the RPC for each region will conduct a presentation ceremony for their region. The

award winners will be announced and appreciation to the volunteer coaches will be made.

Sportscard Engagement Saturday A award will be made at the presentation to an athlete from each age cohort and

gender with the most activity on their Sportscard account over the Challenge. Pictures, Video, Stats, Profile update.

Sportscard Representatives will be at Tamworth to assist

athlete with activation of their card on Saturday.

Coaches Presentation Larry McIntosh, Hockey NSW Coaching Consultant and Richard Willis Pathway Man-ager will conduct a variety of Coaches Workshop after each block on the draw has

concluded.

These will be informal discussion at a designated spot at the complex. All CoD Coaches and any interested parents may attend to develop an

understanding of the Coaching and Passing Principles being developed during COD and the Regional challenge.

The Regional Challenge is being held at Tamworth from 8am on Friday, February 26th and conclude by 3pm Sunday, February 28th.

110 teams competing. Six half fields operating at once. We will see matches with a focus on the Coaching Principles developed during CoD, (Receiving, Distribution,

Offence, Defence and Goal Keeping). Athletes and Coaches will use the Passing and Defensive Principles developed to create space and enjoyment during the games.

Regional Challenge Rules

- Matches of consist of 20 minutes playing time with no halftime break. - 7 field players and 1 Goal Keeper.

- 2 players must stay in attacking half of field always. This can be any two players regardless of playing position.

- Long Corners to be played from halfway where the ball went over the baseline. - Tomahawks and edge passes can be played in all divisions.

- Penalty Strokes are replaced by 1 on 1 shootouts (8 Sec). Attacking player will start from halfway. The shootout must commence within 30 seconds after being

awarded. Conversions—After any goal a team will have the opportunity to convert to gain an extra point via a 1 v 1. This is to be taken by the player who scored the original goal.

Penalty Corners

- Defended by 2 defenders and a GK. - Attacking team has as many players as they like on the edge of the circle including an injector. A goal shot cannot be made until a pass has been completed. The pass

must have the ball travel a minimum of 1 metre before the shot is taken. - The first shot on goal must hit the backboard even if it is a flick.

- All other players retreat to the opposite quarter and can exit the quarter once the ball is injected into the field of play.
