I would like thank all the magicians who have volunteered to perform at recent events. We can all be very proud of the level of community involvement that we have as a local club. Last year we performed at dozens of Community Events, most of which were fund raisers or aware-ness raisers for important causes. We have recently had magicians perform in the lobby of the Players Theater prior to play openings. This past month David Pitchford and I entertained some of the “walkers” at the Juve-nile Diabetes Walk on Siesta Key Beach on March 21st. This kind of involvement in the commu-nity is not only good for promoting magic and our club, but it is a way to give back to a commu-nity which has been very supportive to us. Please come out and join us next time; even if you do only one or two tricks, it is a great way to get some experience and I assure you it is a lot of fun. I would also like to express my thanks to all of the “regulars” at Bennigans on Tuesday nights. This group is growing and the fellowship and sharing of magic is truly amazing. I especially want to thank Dave Pitchford for being the “Ring Master” of the Tuesday night bunch. He has truly been instrumental in making it a wonderful experience. I encourage more members to come by and join us every Tuesday night from 7PM – 9PM. “The real magic is in the fellowship”. I look forward to seeing you all at our next regular meeting the first Thursday in April. We will have a lecture by Andrew Mayne. Andrew does it all. From close-up to grand illusions. He has written books and developed many original magic tricks. Check him out on Google and you will not want to miss this lecture. Please invite friends and other area magicians to attend. The fee for non members is only $10. In May we will have a lecture from our very own Chandler. Chandler will be sharing some of his “Mentalist” magic secrets and techniques. Chandler is a true professional as well as a true gentle-man. I know we all look forward to his presentation. Finally, I want to remind anyone who has not yet paid your dues for 2009 that they were actually due in January. You can pay them in person at our next meeting or call me to make other arraign-ments. Any and all members are welcome to call me at any time at 941-256-5932. I truly appreciate your input and advice.

MAGICAL REMINISCING With Jim Peterson

ERIC LEWIS A Man of Many Talents

The renowned British conjuror Eric Charles Lewis (1908 - 1993) was a prolific artist of note and a man of many talents. He was a highly regarded author, inventor, magician and builder of magic. Eric's attention to detail and proficiency as a builder of apparatus earned him the reputation as one of conjuring's finest craftsman. In 1945, while living in Northampton, Lewis opened Magikraft Studios and constructed high-quality magic apparatus for collectors and performers. The great magical thinker Robert Harbin often had Lewis fabricate his original ideas. With Eric's assistance, Robert built the first model of the legendary "Zig-Zag" illusion. Like his friend Harbin, Eric was also a prolific inventor of magic and conceived a number of effects including "The Twister," "Curious Cubes," "Diminishing Silk Production," "Light bulbs from Mouth" and many others. In 1968 Lewis left England and moved to

California. His standing as a magical talent preceded him. Before long Eric found himself working with Jim Simon of Worth Magic, and in 1972 Dr. Robert Albo commissioned Lewis to create apparatus for his collection. During this period, Eric counseled and built illusions for such outstanding conjurors as David Copperfield, Doug Henning and Mark Wilson. After six years with Gaughan, Lewis retired and concentrated on his writings and occasionally acted as a consultant. In 1973 I met Eric at the Magic Castle and we spent a couple of hours watching his talented son, Martin perform and discussing the 21 books Eric had written on conjuring. Eric penned important historical works such as "P.T. Selbit-Magical Innovator" (with Peter Warlock, 1989) and "The Oriental Magic of the Bambergs" (1973). Lewis wrote and illustrated the Bamberg book from material supplied by Dr. Robert Albo, the renowned collector of magic from Oakland, California and Theo Bamberg's son, David, otherwise known as Fu-Manchu. Last, but not least Lewis illustrated memoirs, "Fifty Years of Magic" (1908 - 83), was published in three volumes. In 1985 Eric was honored by the Academy of Magical Arts with a Literary Fellowship for his outstanding scholarly achievements. During his retirement Eric was honored with numerous awards for a lifetime of magic. In 1985 he was inducted into the Society of American Magicians' Hall of Fame and that same year was awarded a Masters Fellowship from the Academy of Magical Arts. Eric continued to live a life full of magic until his health started to deteriorate and he died on June 6, 1993. Re: The Art of Deception page 346
