Sussex Academy opened under the name Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000 serving 225 students in grades 6 to 8. In 2012 the middle school received approval for a major charter modification to add a high school. In 2013, the school name was changed to Sussex Academy, the school moved into its current location at 21150 Airport Road, Georgetown, Delaware, and the first 9 th grade class was enrolled. Each year, as a new high school grade is added, the enrollment numbers increase. 2014-2015 498 students 2015-2016 594 students 2016-2017 700 students expected There is a high demand for 6 th grade enrollment at Sussex Academy. Therefore, Sussex Academy uses a lottery system. School recruitment begins in November and the public lottery is held in January. A 9 th grade lottery was held for the 2016-2017 school year, as the community interest in the high school has increased over the last three years. Sussex Academy currently employs 36 teachers and 6 paraprofessionals. Additional teachers will be hired for the 2016-2017 academic year. The school is currently interviewing for a new Athletic Director. Academics are the main focus at Sussex Academy. The middle school curriculum follows an Expeditionary Learning Approach. Learning expeditions are interdisciplinary studies, usually lasting six to twelve weeks, led by a teacher or teaching team. Learning expeditions are based on State and Common Core standards, aligned with local curriculum maps and focused on essential content and skills. Each learning expedition includes guiding questions, kickoff experiences, projects, lessons, fieldwork, experts, service learning, and a culminating event that features high-quality student work.

SussexAcademywasapprovedasanauthorizedInternationalBaccalaureate(IB)WorldSchoolinMarch2015.AllSussexAcademy11thand12gradersareenrolledintheIBcoursesandhavetheoptiontocompletetheIBDiploma.StudentschoosingtochallengetheentireIBDiplomaProgramwilltakeatotalofsixIBcourses:math,chemistry,literature,Spanish,historyandasixthcourseoftheirchoosing.Inaddition,allofthestudentsalsotake“TheoryofKnowledge,”andparticipatein“Creativity,ActivityandService.”ThestudentsroundouttheirIBDiplomaProgramwithan“ExtendedEssay”whichisa4,000wordessaythatisresearchedandwrittenaboutatopicrelevanttoanIBsubjecttheyarealreadytaking.Currently,19outoftheschool’s40grade11studentsareenrolledintheIBDiplomaProgram.SussexAcademyoffersafull-fledgedathleticsprogram.TheschoolcompetesintheHenlopenSouthConference.Thefollowingsportsarecurrentlybeingoffered:MiddleSchoolBoys:Baseball,Basketball,SoccerandCrossCountryHighSchoolBoys:Basketball,Golf,Lacrosse,Soccer,Swimming,TennisandCrossCountryMiddleSchoolGirls:Basketball,Cheerleading,FieldHockey,Soccer,Softball,CrossCountryandVolleyballHighSchoolGirls:Basketball,Dance,Golf,Lacrosse,Soccer,Swimming,CrossCountryandVolleyballTheSussexAcademyFoundationisthefundraisingentityforSussexAcademy.Asacharterschool,SussexAcademydoesnotreceivecapitalfromeithertheStateorFederalfunds.,TheSussexAcademyFoundationinitiatedacapitalcampaignin2012.Themoneyraisedfromprivatedonors,businesses,foundationsandeventshasbeenusedfortheacquisitionandbuildoutoftheschool’scurrentlocation.ThefoundationhasalsoborrowedsignificantsumsfromtheRuralDevelopmentarmoftheUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgriculture.Sincethepurchaseofthecurrentlocation,classrooms,sciencelabs,administrativeoffices,lockerrooms,restrooms,artificialturfandnaturalgrassathleticfields,aperformingartsstage,cafeteriaandanInformationCommons/Libraryhavebeenadded.Constructioniscurrentlyunderwayfora30,000squarefootmiddleschoolwingthatisscheduledforcompletioninAugust.With$14millionraisedtodate,theFoundationisworkingtoacquireanadditional$4million.Thisfinalphaseofthecapitalcampaignwillprovidefundingforthemiddleschoolwing,bleachers,athleticfieldlighting,pathways,scoreboards,additionalparkingandaconcessionbuilding.Anaquaticcenter,agenerousgifttoSussexAcademyfromSchellBrothers,isalsounderconstructionwithascheduledAugustcompletiondate.
