SPOTLIGHT ON GRADE 5

The 5th grade students have had such a wonderful year with many creative projects,

engaging activities and lifetime memories being made along the way!

In ELA, the students have been eagerly working on their Wax Museum Projects.

This year, the focus of the Wax Museum has evolved to integrate the core princi-

ples of STEM. Each student has been researching an INNOVATOR that has made a

significant contribution to better our modern world through Science, Technology,

Engineering and/or Math. On May 6th, they will come “alive” and be on display at

the annual 5th grade Wax Museum. We would love for you to visit from 9:00-11:00

and learn about the many innovators who have made such valuable impacts on our

lives.

In Religion, the focus has been on the Sacraments and the grace received in the

Sacraments that help us to live as faithful followers of Jesus. This year's Holy Week

and Easter had a special meaning for us as we learned that Jesus instituted the Sac-

raments during his life, death and resurrection. We have also had opportunity to

provide many cross-curricular experiences. In the fall, we learned what it is like to

live with different types of disabilities. Putting the Beatitudes in action, we learned

how we can be empathetic and help persons with disabilities in the most impactful

ways.

Thanks to the STEM team, we extended this learning second semester with STEM

lessons that allowed us to design knee braces for those with a physical disability.

We were blessed to have Mrs. Morris, a St. Barnabas parent and missionary with

the WALK team, explain how health professionals incorporate STEM during ortho-

pedic surgeries. She showed us how children in Central America were able to walk

after these surgeries and she modeled how we can use our God-given talents to

help persons in life-changing ways.

On May 12th, the 5th graders will embark on an overnight field trip to CYO Camp

Rancho Framasa. While there we will learn about nature and taking care of God’s

creation. Students always enjoy focusing on prayer and faith while also having the

time of their lives.

HEIFER INTERNATIONAL Many thanks to our students and parents for support of our Lenten service project, Heifer International. (Check out more at www.heifer.org.) The students learned much about how families in third world countries depend on subsistence farming for their livelihoods and how the gift of an animal – or two – can make it possible for them to support their families. They learned that not all people are able to go to school or have access to clean water. In each grade level, the students decided how to use the funds they donated. Together we can do much. Altogether our students donated $3,7. With a matching donation by a donor to Heifer International, the St. Barnabas school community will provide the gifts listed above.

Kroger: register your Kroger Card under Community Rewards for St. Barnabas School. So far we have

earned $8000 by just buying our groceries!

Amazon Shopper? Use the link www.smile.amazon.com and register to support St. Barnabas

School. 0.5% of your purchase goes back to St. Barnabas. To build on that, purchase a ScripNow for Amazon and 3.5% of that purchase supports St. Barnabas. So your $100 purchase at Amazon could give St. Barnabas $4 all without having to buy anything you weren’t planning to.
