Auction Catalogs - American
FOREWORD
It is a great privilege to finally be able to sell this unusual
collection of Latin American gold coins. Many years we have waited
to be granted the privilege to sell these magnificent rarities.
Rarely have so many rarities of the Independent American
Republics been seen in one sale, and never has such condition been
encountered.
^Mhen or where did we see in one sale an uncirculated set of 20,
10, 5 and 2 1/2 Pesos of Salvador together with a brilliant proof set
of 100, 50, 25 and 5 Bolivares 1875? Where did a 4 Pesos of Para-
guay, a 20 Pesos of Honduras and a 60 Pesos of Mexico get offered
for sale in the same half hour?
Experts on numismatics of the old and new Spanish World,Messrs. X. 8C F. Calico have been willing to catalogue these coins
in their superb way. Both Xavier and Fernando Calico are known to
every collector the world over.
All of us are familiar with the superb cataloguing done in the
beautiful palatial establishment on the century old Plaza del Angelin Barcelona, Spain.
It is a great privilege that they have given their knowledge andtime to make this collection a special presentation in the annualpopular Kreisberg-Schulman sale. Mr. Xavier Calico is at present
president of the I.A.P.N. whose 15th Congress is taking place May16th-19th in New York.
These following lots are being sold as part of the schedule in
the annual Kreisberg-Schulman sale numbering (2250-2376). How-ever, since they are a separate part and a completely detached collec-
tion from the magnificent Kreisberg-Schulman consignments, theconsignor of these 125 Latin American gold lots has asked to havethese coins presented in a separate catalogue.
Therefore, before we continue the Kreisberg-Schulman sale of600 gold rarities in the 4th Saturday afternoon session, we will sell
these 125 lots numbered 2250-2376 at 2:30 P. M. on May 21st, andwe congratulate in advance the new owners of these rarities.
ANOTHER IBERO-AMERICANO
PUBLICATION
Many collectors will remember the years that the firms of
X. & F. Calico and Hans M. F. Schulman published the popular
Ibero-Americano Boletin de Numismatica written in Spanish and
Fnglish by the most knowledgeable Mr. Xavier Calico, now President
of the International Association of Professional Numismatists.
Many collectors will also remember the auction catalog of the
Marquis de LL Collection in 1952, which demonstrated so clearly the
close collaboration between the two firms. It is the continuation of
the Boletin and the Marquis de LL Collection which has brought us
together again in this superb sale of South American gold rarities.
Latin America and Spain meet in the business world of New York
City where Spanish culture has always exerted much influence. Did
not Spanish milled dollars function as legal tender until as late as
the year 1845? It is important to know that Latin American gold
coins of the independent republics are only on the threshold of their
popularity. Gold coins of many of the European countries have in-
creased considerably in value, whereas the Latin American series have
not shown much increase at all in valuation. Former import currency
restrictions in the Latin American countries hampered the popu-
larity growth. Now we consider collecting Latin American gold coins
one of the best numismatic investments. In the 28 years that we
have been established in New York, we only saw 2 specimens of the
Paraguay 4 Pesos offered for sale and only 2 sets of the Venezuela
1875 proofs. Never have we encountered an uncirculated set of
Salvador’s 1892 coins and we personally never handled a 20 Peso of
Honduras in all our years of selling coins. The coins mentioned
above are greatly undervalued in th is catalog. The possession of any
of these rarities is considered in the realm of reaching almost the
impossible.
We hope that the many collectors interested in these series will
find in the collaboration of Hans M. F. Schulman and X. 8C F.
Calico an enhancing combination of Spanish and North American
numismatics.

REPUBLICA DE HONDURASIt is really very difficult to make a responsible valuation o f the
following extremely rare set of Honduras. In spite of the fact that
there is an increasing interest in Numismatics of Latin America this
specialty is still far away from what it should be.
Anyway we are sure that in a short time the value of these
coins will increase by many times today’s figures.

REPUBLICA DEL PARAGUAY
As happens with all the coins of such egregious rarity it is
difficult to fix the value of this coin. It lacks in the most important
collections and in our opinion the figure of $10,000 should be con-
sidered as a good investment.

REPUBLICA DE EL SALVADOR
Evidently the values on Friedberg for the following coins are
too low. It is difficult to acquire occasionally one of the pieces of El
Salvador, but it is almost impossible to find the complete set like it
is offered in this sale. Occasionally a single piece is obtainable.
In our opinion this set should be sold at not less than $5,000 or
even more, especially in this Extr. F. condition which we have neverseen.
