FOREWORD
We, the class of nineteen hundred
and thirty-eight, the first to graduate
from the new high school, hope sin-
cerely that we may some day, in the
new life ahead of us, look back and feel
that we have done our best to establish
a precedent of which we may be proud,
and worthy of being followed by the
generations of students to come.

Class Song of 1938
Music by Philip Musso
Words by Janet Cross
Oh, Class of '38 we greet thee now;
Our parting song to thee we sing.
In years to come, each thought returning
To Cranford's halls, where our memories cling.
Those youthful days of work and careless play
Through four short years have seemed to fly.
Will you remember us as wellAs we remember thee, Oh Cranford High?
To take thy name to far flung parts of earth,
We'll strive the Blue and Cold to wave;
That all the world may know as we go forth
That Cranford's banners stand for the brave.
As now we pass beyond your portals,
We promise thee we will not fail.
This song we chant in unison—
Oh, Cranford High School do we greet thee, "Hail.

CLASS OFFICERS
C L A S S H I S T O R YWhen we, the Class of 1938 entered Cleveland High School, we all
had a feeling that we were destined to have something unusual happen tous. To start things rolling we chose for sophomore officers Eleanor Wysocki, president; Jack Arnesen, vice-president; Alex Bell, secretary; and RuthSchade, treasurer. The chrysanthemum became the class flower. "Deeds, not words" was immortalized as our motto, and crimson and silver wereordained to decorate the programs of the Junior Sub and Junior-Senior Prom
After the loss of our Junior president, Carol Morrison, Harold Crimeswas elected to step into her unoccupied shoes, wi th Wi l l iam Tyree rightbehind him. Marjorie Miskelly threatened us w i th dire consequences ifwe didn't pay our dues, and Muriel Lindsay read the minutes at classmeetings. Two one-act plays were given, followed by dancing, to carry outthe Junior Play tradition, and we moved on into our Senior year.
Wi l l iam Carroll became the gavel-wielder wi th Fred Schroder to helph im ; Margaret Robinson worried over our money matters, and Alice Blackrecorded the events at meetings.
Af ter the Christmas holidays we fulf i l led our destiny when the wholeschool picked up its belongings and transferred to the new building at WestEnd Place. This gave us the honor of being the first class to graduate from"Dear New C. H, S." It also gave us something smaller than Freshmento tr ip over—the 7th and 8th graders—the Freshmen having learned todefend themselves. The Senior House Warming was the first dance givenin the new gym, and a large profit was made. The Senior Play, "CrowingPains" was presented in March, and we were told that it was the bestSenior play ever put on.
And so we come to the end by wishing the Class of '39 as much successas we have enjoyed.
"Rah' Rah1 C. H. S.!"

C L A S S P R O P H E C Y"Wel l , Fred, do you still prefer to remain a bachelor after seeing how happily
married Elinore and I are?" Thus we sat down to dinner, the seven of us, Elinore and I.our husbands, the twins, and our dinner guest, our old classmate Fred Schroder. Aftertelling each other how little we had changed after all these years (knowing all the timewe couldn't have recognized each other without calling cards) I started again to find outabout Fred's ideas on marriage.
"You know this bachelor life isn't all it is supposed to be. Frankly I've heard there'sno comfort to it whatsoever."
"Truthfully, Louise," answered Fred, "I 've heard it is much more comfortable thanthe thorny road of matrimony."
The husbands interrupted, as husbands have a habit of doing and reminded us thatwe were here to discuss details for our round-the-world trip. It took us all the rest of
dinner and the evening to iron out the details — such as, which liner; should we take thetwins; should we take the golf clubs and in what neighbor's care should we leave the dog.
The next day we started our shopping tour at Bon wit Teller's. We were greetedby Charles Albury, dapper floor walker, who directed us to the Children's Department.Doris Byrnes, one of the clerks, satisfied our needs.
From there we went to Stern's. In the coat department we bumped into LucyDi Tullio, who was shopping with her four little boys. Louise called the twins" attentionto little Wallie and Will ie Cheser who were accompanied by their parents, Dr. and Mrs.Cheser.
We four went to luncheon at Berardinelli's Spaghetti Shoppe where we were greetedby the proprietor himself. He told us we had just missed Betty Merrill, the well-knownnurse, and her chum, Janet Cross, who was teaching at Katharine Cibbs School.
Six P. M.! We went to meet our husbands and Fred for dinner at the Hotel WaldorfAstoria. To our surprise the featured orchestra of the evening was Wally Roberts andhis Sophisticated Syncopators. He introduced Miss Vallera Conshors, soloist for theevening.
The night before sailing the five of us decided to do the town. We started at theage-old Stork Club. Seated at the table across from us was New York's famed playboy,Joe Plummer, and with him was the famous model, Patty Wild.
Later on at another club we were amazed to spy Jane McCinnis, our former schoolmate, graciously selling cigarettes.
We wound up in the early morning at Chi Ids'. The hostess, Patricia Jewell, seatedus.
The next day, at the pier, we saw Mrs. Beam and Mrs. Bail are bidding farewell totheir husbands who were leaving on a tour through the wilds of Africa. Their interpreter,Will iam Scholz, was accompanying them.
The steward, Edwin Ensor, showed us to our staterooms and introduced us to thestewardess, Patricia En right, who took a great liking to the twins. We learned fromthem that the head chef was none other than Victor Radlinski.
The passenger list showed us that Admiral and Mrs. Nathaniel Mims; CountessOlivia Van Ostaff, the former Mary Hosmer; Mildred Jansen, famous mannequin; MarjorieMiskelly, leader of the well-known swing orchestra; and Eleanor Cunvaldsen, U. S. Secre-tary of State, were among those crossing with us.
The captain of the boat. Sir Herbert Simmons, was the master of ceremonies at theentertainment on the last night.
When we arrived in London one of the first functions we attended was the opera.During the course of the evening we met Alex Bell, Dartmouth football coach; RichardAndrews, chemical engineer; Curtis Hallbert, head photographer of the Life Magazine;Eleanor Metz, President of the London branch of the Thursday Morning Club; BarbaraWaters, Joke Editor of the Punch Magazine; and in the orchestra pit we discovered PhilMusso.
Of course we had to stop in Paris for the Exposition. The first day of our visit weattended a fashion show put on by Janice Barnes and Isabel Fairweather I well-knownfashion designers) . The clothes were modeled by Helen Franklin, better known as thewife of the French aviator, Orville De Trix; blonde Ruth Schade, third wife of Lord Ron-vater IV; and Ethel Schultze, famous Parisian model.
From here we hurried over to the Palais De La Danse where Edna Miller was makingbox office history. Charles Binder was doing an adagio dance with Marian Stephens andDoris Bogen was doing interpretive dancing.
Passing a sidewalk cafe we noticed Lester Bishop, Paris Playboy, accompanied by twolovely redheads, one of whom we recognized as none other than Pete Franklin, a youngwidow.
From Pans we dropped down to Spain. In Madrid, the king of the spring festivalwas Edward Cole, Chicago financier, and queen was Frances Mac Phail, former debutante.Olga Mirkowich, New York dancer, led a special number. Going farther into the countrywe located Barbara Sinclair, world-known poet, in her charming castle. Visiting her washer sister, Nancy, petite society matron. There also, we met Charles Kiami — famous
Page 46
soldier of fortune — and their other house guests, Jack Jensenius and Camp Hopkins, who had just completed their walking tour around southern Europe. It was hinted thatthey might soon need the services of Jack Henning, internationally famous chiropodist. Before leaving Madrid we stopped to see one of its traditional bull fights. We werethrilled by the matadors lack Modne, George Leavitt, and John Redmon. Crossing theborder to leave Spain we encountered the Nordstrom brothers, Richard and Roy, havinga little trouble trying to get their stunt act into the country.
Back again — speeding over southern France, the newspapers told us that the heroof the hour in Monte Carlo was E. Calvin Shire, Jr., who has just had the honor lor luck)to break the bank. On the beach at Nice were Eleanor Wysocki and her chum MurielLindsay taking a hard earned vacation from their exclusive Fifth Avenue dress shop.Resting a day at Cannes from the constant journey Fred told us he had met the famousgolf pros., George (Casey) Poeltler and Harold Crimes, battling for the cup offered bynone other than Dick Vandermade, the owner of the Safer-Than- Sure -Safety -FastenerCompany. While exploring the town, Elinore and Louise ran into Elizabeth Smith andMargaret Robinson searching frantically for some antique mirrors for their homes inScarsdale.
Resuming the tour with new vigor we went to Rome -— to see the ancient marvels. At the station we were greeted by hordes and hordes of people. We smiled feebly, won-dering why on earth we should receive such an ovation.
We realized that we were mistaken as the crowd surged toward the last car. Fromit emerged the great matinee idol, William (Petruchio) Herzog and his manager and pressagent •— Harold Davis. Outside of the city, digging beside the Appian way we foundProfessor Dora Finch and her assistant Helen Martin, Professor Thomas Greene and hisassistant Felix Moses — all archeologists looking for the ruins of Ancient Rome. Movingon to Venice we found Roy Brinkerhoff. president of the Gondoliers' Union, who hadadded the modem touch to "gondoliering." It was rumored throughout the town that hisbusiness was suffering on account of the competition offered by the Markowich Speed-boat Company.
Flying toward Switzerland, our pilot pointed out Professor Chinery in a balloon ob-serving the stars . . . Arriving at St. Moritz we met Dorothy Dengler, the head skiinstructor. Among her pupils were Margaret Trompelt, U. S. Secretary of War, andAlbert Volckmann, personal secretary to Roland Stout, the head of internationally famousbroadcasting studios. Louise Young, television artist was also trying her luck at thesport. Duchess Von Swizzpauli I alias Alice Ruth Black) registered herself and her sevenhandsome little dukes as we were leaving for Berlin. There Josephine Bostinto and JosephineSantoro were the rage of the town as the "Singing Jo's". In the company with them was thatfamous trombone player, Calvin Schwabe, and clever comedian, Steve Peti, with his stooge,Mary Laucus. The human cannon balls, Marguerite Hess and John Feduniak, were startlingall of Berlin.
On to Moscow! Our attention was called to an approaching train by the lusty bassvoice of John Caffrey. Here Edward Cosmos and Gordon Grau, automobile salesmen, weretrying their luck at selling Fords to Russians. We enjoyed a completely Americanizeddinner at the home of the famous scientist, Richard Shaw. There also were Norman Shire, economist, and Betty Williams, New York dress buyer. The vegetables were supplied byRaymond Scott and Jack Willis, who were running a cooperative farm just outside Moscow.—Still hitch-hiking.—this time to Vladivostok, was Paul Svendsen. In Siberia, we were toldof the imprisonment of Joe Shepard, due to the use of blasphemy in referring to the Sovietgovernment. Showing the Russians just how to dig ditches were Raymond Collins and EdwinRohrer. We went southward toward Tibet where Miss Elizabeth Rood was doing notablemissionary work accompanied by Dorothy Reiner and Pastor Philip Conley. Fighting onthrough the wilderness was a party of explorers consisting of Emma Beese, Jeanne French,Vera Kovacs, Harry Harrison, Ruth Keyser, Edward, Miller, and Alfred Travers all searchingfor Shangri-La.
In Tokio we bumped into Skelly Carroll paying off a bet by pulling a jinrikisha aroundthe city for three days dressed in shorts. At a Japanese night club Dorothea Bonhag, ThomasDineen, Marie Somers and Jack Arnesen all students at the University of Toykanna wereattempting to teach the Japanese the age-old Suzy-O.
In Australia hunting kangaroos were Alfred Brown and William Tyree, they wereattempting to bring twn nr three back fnr Yellowstone Park in our own United States.
The city of Sydney was a pleasant sight. We really didn't expect to find it so civilized. The greatest surprise however was "The Brass Lantern Tea Room" doing a wonderful business. We found that it was owned equally by Edna Gipson, Charlotte Saunders, Bernice Hudson andBernice Durham.
On the boat going from Australia we stopped off at Honolulu to find Constance Glenden-ning and Mercie Franke teaching dancing to the natives or vice-versa. Touring the rest ofthe island we met Christine Bnrezeka, an economics teacher, Doris Broadwell, home nursingteacher, and Selma Brod, English teacher, all taking vacations from their teaching activitiesat C. H. S.
As the boat entered San Francisco, its decks filled with passengers, our attention wassuddenly drawn to a group of people on the Golden Gate Bridge. Suddenly we saw a manleap off the side. We were horror-stricken. A wave of murmurs crept over the crowd. Atelephone call assured us that it was no suicide—but Jimmy Skinner, dare-devil stunt manof Hollywood. (continued on page 88)

W e give you the members of the Class of ' 41 , commonly called
the Freshmen. They are fortunate indeed to spend their four years in our
new school. W i t h the excellent facilities afforded them they should
become an efficient and prominent group. From the class of ' 38—to the
class of '41—have as much fun as we have had in the four fleet years.
Page 52
Due to the resignation of Miss Pray, Mr. West was appointed thesponsor for the class at the beginning of the school year.
The Junior Class waited until spring to give its annual JuniorSubscription Dance, which is usually held in November in order to usethe new gymnasium. The affair proved highly successful and original. The class hopes to accomplish much in its senior year.
Good Luck Juniors! May you have a successful year as Seniors!
President, Roy Daniels; Vice-President, Margaret Diradourian;Secretary, Miriam Graff; Treasurer, Bill Plummer; Student CouncilRepresentative, Leo Panasewitz; Sponsor, Mr. West.
The Sophomores have just be-come organized this year. Theychose as their class colors blue andwhite. Their class motto is "Facta, non Verba". Their class flower isthe gardenia.
The Sophomores have inaugu-rated tha Sophomore Dance. Ittook place on April Fools' Day andwas very successfully conducted.
F R E S H M A N C L A S S
At last the Freshmen have lost their distinction of being the
smallest in the school. We are sure they are as pleased as we are to
see the seventh graders, latest and briefest additions to the High-School.
However, in spite of their size, they are already beginning to form
class organizations.

We welcome the eighth graders in this their first year wi th the
upper classmen. Although they wil l also be the first eighth grade which
is unable to conduct the customary graduation exercises, we feel sure
that this loss wi l l be offset by certain privileges, such as being able to
see and meet the Seniors daily.

FOOTBALL SQUADCranford's 1937 football eleven was awarded third place in the
final standings of the Croup 2 North Jersey High School Competition.Though the team's win and loss record was not as impressive as itmight have been, the team fought on relentlessly under the able leader-ship of Captain Harold Crimes. Six veterans, namely Harold Crimes,Tom Nolan, Roy Brinkerhoff, Al Brown, Ronnie Kelsey, and GeorgePoeltler reported for practice and formed the nucleus of a very inex-perienced team. Tom Nolan proved to be extremely valuable in thescore column with twenty-five points to carry away the scoring honorsfor 1937. Others placing in this column were Poeltler with twelvepoints, Ericksen, Brinkerhoff, Korner, and Ensor with six points each, and Captain Crimes with one point.

H O C K E Y T E A MAfter a year of idleness, hockey returns to take its place in Cran-
ford's sports parade. The inactivity of the team was due to unseasonableweather in the winter of 1936-37 so no games were played, but thisyear the team played under Captain Bill Plummer's leadership. Theirwin, loss, and tied record, was three, four and one, respectively. JoePlummer was high scorer with five goals to his credit. The team sup-ported itself financially and did a very fine job.
The lineup for the 1937-38 Blue and Cold Hockey Team consistedof Hager and Davis, defense men; Skinner and Bill Plummer, wingmen; Joe Plummer, center; E. Wild, goalie. The reserves for this teamincluded George Kettle, Solon Lawrence. King Ward, "Bud" Hall, andBill Sprole.
They played Hun School, and were beaten 9 to 1, but this occurredonly after a three weeks' period of warm weather, during which icehockey was an impossibility.

GIRLS' AThe Girls' Activity Program has as its aim to encourage
each girl to participate in the sport or sports which she pre-fers and is best suited for, now and in future life. The newhigh school has been a great aid in making possible theattainment of this goal during the past year. Due to betterfacilities and more time, it has been possible to provide manyindividual activities and team games. There has been anoticeable amount of interest and enthusiasm in the way thegirls have entered into their athletic program.
Basketball proved to be a very popular sport this year.Fourteen teams took part in the tournament. Numerals werepresented to the winning team captained by Betty Scar-brough
Page 86
THLETICSNomahegan Park was the scene of hockey games which
took place in the fall. A number of girls enjoyed this activity, and again the Juniors showed their outstanding ability.
Badminton was introduced for the first time and provedto be a leading activity with an enrollment of ninety girls. Two tournaments were held, an "Elimination Tournament"and a "Ladder Tournament".
Classes in golf were held four afternoons a week. Bowl-ing, volley ball, servusball, and paddle tennis, also have someenthusiastic participants.
Track and baseball, as yet, are incomplete.Sponsor—Mrs. Breck.
SCIENCE SQUEAKSAll statements below have been proved true by the scientists of our Science Squeaks
Department. Only after long and tiring research work are we able to relate these facts toyou; you may be astonished at the facts revealed by this department, so take a strong rein-forced chair and sit down and get ready for S:ience Squeaks.
1—Most young authors live in attics because they usually cannot live on the first story.
2—Cuba, an island in the Atlantic Ocean—believe this or not—is entirely surrounded bya thing called water. The department has recently warned Cuba of this fact.
3—Of all the Science Squeakses, this one is by far the most startling and amazing—it isthe fact that most divorces are caused by marriages.
4—The introduction of the camera has made the taking of pictures much easier.
5—Birds fly south every fall because it is too far to walk.
6—-This Science Squeak will undoubtedly cause an argument—99f/c of all the collegestudents who graduated in 1937 were able to rsad and write.
7—Fire extinguishers filled with gasoline have been found by scientists not to be veryeffective in fighting fires.
8—It is easier to chew chewing gum when the wrappers have been removed.
9—Not one major league baseball player in the years 1935-37 was able to steal to firstbase.
10—Ocean currents are stopping places where electric eels are charged.
CLASS PROPHECYl Continued from Page 471
We visited the M. C. M. studios in Hollywood where Cherrie Carberry, Mary JaneYeakel, and Laura Zickler are acting as script girls for the picture "The Wise Profits" whosestars were Paul Encksen, Rita Ha shim, and William Speed. This famous picture was beingdirected by Buddy Morris. On stage 22 Warren Peterson was doing the 12th in a seriesof Tarzan Pictures, his mate was none other than Helen Randall.
At the Brown Derby we saw many familiar faces, among them: Robert Griffin, famouscomedian; Tommy Nolan, ex-pugilist turned movie star; Virginia Wheeler, gossip columneditor; Jane Wallace, society blues singer; and Mildred Ummer, currently playing the titlerole in the picture "Alice-in-Wonderland."
Hiring a car and a trailer from Bob Crube, persistent salesman, we started eastward.Stopping at a drive-in for refreshments we were greeted by the proprietor Richard Doylewhose assistant Millie Di Tullio served us delicious malted milks.
In the trailer camp about 300 miles from Hollywood we met a group of Cranford residentstraveling toward the west coast. They were Mary Doyle, magazine editor, Betty Massa, housewife, Grace SteggaMs, radio commentator and her secretary, Dons Wanko. At Reno, twoof our ex-classmates, Anne Valentino and Alice Sanzalone, who contrary to the usual customwere getting married.
Traveling through the wilderness we uncovered the Dude ranch of Peter Markey, famedfor his yearly rodeo.
In Yellowstone, Peggy Wetjen, the ex-follies girl, was amusing herself feeding the bears. Also visiting Yellowstone was George Snyder, distinguished New York Lawyer vacationingafter a trying murder case.
Crossing Lake Michigan on the same boat were James Reilly, his wife and their triplets."Ah, there's no place like home—•" said Elinore as we sat down to dinner our first
night at home. "The world is a wonderful place—very marvelous—but living from a trunkand sleeping on a rocking boat are not my ideas of comfort."
"Yes" satd Fred—•" I'm inclined to agree with you two—Maybe married life isn't socomplicated after a l l . "
Just then the twins let out a wail, the milk glasses upset; the potatoes burned andElinore and Louise longed for the solace of a London fog.
