A Challenge to EveryAmbitious Man

Success in any endeavor comes from plan-ning. A man without a plan is like a shipwithout a rudder. To get the most out of theset of books, whether you use it as a homestudy set, or for an on-the-job reference set,you must plan to use it properly.

This booklet gives you 9 practical sugges-tions that should enable you to get more outof your set.

Before explaining these specific sugges-tions I'd like to make clear, a point of greatimportance to you. All the books of this 7volume set were written so they make inter-esting reading. The facts are there, presentedin a style never before used in technicalbooks. The men who wrote or edited thesebooks are the instructing staff of CoyneElectrical School. These men have years ofexperience in explaining electrical subjects.Their daily job is to explain to men of littleor no experience, the construction, installa-tion, and maintenance of electrical equip-ment. They have put into this set the same, clear, easy to follow instructions they use inour training shops. In addition they havedeveloped a personal progress check, in theself examination questions after most chap-ters, so that you can see the progress youare making. This is an extremely importantpoint in using a set of this kind.

Thousands of men have already foundthese interesting books the pathway to suc-cess in electricity. They followed our sugges-tions on how to use the books.

What these books have done for others-they can do for you - but you must have aplan and here is your plan for using AppliedPractical Electricity.

How to Use ThisSet as a Home

Study Set of BooksHere are some specific ideas to use to get

the most out of Applied Practical Electricity,or any other books or set of books that youever have an opportunity to read.

1. ARRANGE TO SPEND AT LEAST 30MINUTES PER DAY ON THESE BOOKSFirst and foremost, I would advise you to

try to arrange to set aside at least 30 minutesper day for reading and studying AppliedPractical Electricity. Try to systematizeeither your work or your home life so thatyou can devote at least this much time tothese books.

However, I would like to make clear thatyou should never at any time, try to study ifyou do not feel like studying. It would befar better for a man to skip a day, 2 days oreven 3 days, if he was ill or not "in the mood"to study, than to try to force himself to dosomething which he is not mentally at themoment able to concentrate on. When yousit down to read these books, your mindshould be free to concentrate on them in away that you should.

2. READING CAN BE A PLEASUREAbove all, approach the reading of the

Coyne books as a pleasure, since you aregoing to learn something that you want toknow and something that will enable you toprogress in life.

3

Page 5: APPLIED - americanradiohistory.com · try to arrange to set aside at least 30 minutes per day for reading and studying Applied Practical Electricity. Try to systematize either your

Look on your time spent on these books asyou would the building up of a bank account.Every minute you put in, in reading andstudying Applied Practical Electricity, buildsup your "bank account" for success. Justthink of the advantage you will have over aman who is not willing to put in this extratime. Keep saying to yourself : "The time andeffort I put into the study of Applied Practi-cal Electricity will prepare me for my op-portunity when it comes-I am giving my-self, my family and my job a fair deal byputting in this spare time to improve myknowledge." If you can think along that line, you will find that the time you put in onCoyne's Electrical books, will be a pleasureand will differ from any other studying youhave done in your life.

3. HOW TO CONCENTRATEIn order to get the most out of your read-

ing, you must concentrate. First of all, find aquiet spot, secondly, make yourself comfort-able, and see that you remain undisturbedwhile you read. An important point is tomake sure you have a good light, and deter-mine to devote your time to study, allowingnothing to interfere with your purpose.

4

4. MAKE NOTESBe sure to have a paper and pencil handy

for making notes on points of special inter-est. If a particular electrical principle or lawis explained, that you feel you will have con-stant use of on the job, it might be well towrite out the principle or law. When youwrite, you learn TWO WAYS-you learn byfirst reading the printed page and secondly,by the sense of touch which you actuallywrite.

5. READ A PARAGRAPH AT TIME ANDMAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT

BEFORE GOING ON IF YOU HAVETO READ IT SEVERAL TIMES

One of the difficulties with many men whotake a set of books to read and study, isthat they try to progress too rapidly. Theyquite often will read a paragraph and be-cause they are thinking of some point fur-ther on in the particular volume they arestudying, they will pass over the immediateparagraph they are reading, too lightly. Theresult is that they do not thoroughly under-stand the point and since in many cases ithas an important bearing on anything theyread further in the book, they have difficultyas they proceed. The important thing is toread each paragraph and thoroughly under-stand it before going to the next. A goodpractice is to stop at the end of the para-

graph and ask yourself, "Do I understandthe point brought out in that paragraph."If you do, then proceed to the next para-graph. But if not, go back and read it overagain-if necessary, read it several timesuntil you get the point. If you do this, in thebeginning of your reading and studying of

Applied Practical Electricity, it will becomea habit and you will unconsciously "doublecheck" yourself on each paragraph. The bestexample of what I mean on this point is tooutline that you cannot possibly make a homerun in baseball without first touching first, second and third bases.

6. BE SURE TO ANSWER THE REVIEWQUESTIONS

You will find beginning in Volume 1 andprogressing through all of the volumes ofApplied Practical Electricity, that manychapters have review questions at the endof the chapter. These have been especiallyprepared for your benefit. They provide a"yard stick" that will enable you to under-stand how you are progressing in your read-ing of this set of books. By all means, stopwhen you reach the end of a chapter whereina set of review questions is listed, and answerthese questions. The thing to do would be towrite them out on a sheet of paper and be-neath each question place your answer. Thendouble check the answers with the explana-tion in the preceding chapter and in this wayyou will have the best possible guide as tohow you are understanding the subjectmatter.

7. USE THE ILLUSTRATIONS CONSTANTLYFOR CLEARER UNDERSTANDING

An old Chinese philosopher once said:"One picture tells the story of 10,000 words."You will find that one of the advantages ofthis set is the fact that it is profusely illus-trated with photographs and diagrams. Wefeel that these illustrations- (although theygreatly increase the cost of preparing thisset of books) -are a vital necessity and agreat help to a man who is reading andstudying these books. Throughout the set,

wherever we can more clearly illustrate thepoint by a photo or diagram, you will find itincluded. By all means, stop when you cometo these diagrams, study them and you willfind one of the most enjoyable points in read-ing these books, will be the tracing of thecircuits on the various diagrams and theanalyzing of the Electrical apparatus by vir-tue of the photographs.

8. DIRECT ASSOCIATION HELPS YOUTO REMEMBER FACTS

One of the best ways to remember whatyou learn, is to try to associate the factswith something you already know. Let meillustrate at this point just what we meanby this. In explaining the principle of InverseRelation in Electricity, we bring out the rela-tion between resistance and current in acircuit.

You are undoubtedly familiar with the or-dinary "teeter-totter" in a playground. Thisis a long board set midway on a stand, andwhen a youngster on one end goes up, theyoungster on the other end goes down. Wellthe principle of Inverse Relation in elec-tricity is, that when the resistance in a cir-cuit goes up, the amount of current goesdown. In like manner, when the current goes

up, the resistance goes down. The followingillustration shows you what we mean and isbased on the principle of the association offacts with things you already know. In otherwords, while it might be difficult for you toretain the actual formula of inverse relationin Electricity, it is certainly easy for you toremember it when you think of it in termsof a "teeter-totter."

Throughout all of Coyne's Applied Prac-

tical Electricity, you find simple, down toearth illustrations like these, to explain apoint in such a way that the reader can re-tain it by an "idea picture" that anyone canunderstand.

Another way is use the information youhave at once. As an example, suppose youfind that a certain fact on an early page ofthe first volume applies to something you didthat very day or do soon on a job. If youapply the fact to your specific problem, youwill be able to remember it due to the asso-ciation with definite use.

9. TALK TO FELLOW WORKERS ABOUTTHE FACTS YOU ARE LEARNING

Another good idea is to talk with yourfellow workers on the various informationyou are reading in Applied Practical Elec-tricity. Show them how you have informa-tion which is of practical use. In this way,you too will be aided in remembering these

8

Page 10: APPLIED - americanradiohistory.com · try to arrange to set aside at least 30 minutes per day for reading and studying Applied Practical Electricity. Try to systematize either your

things because by actually speaking and ex-plaining these principles, you are using stillanother sense, namely, speaking. When youread a book, you use sight, when you writeout certain facts or statements that you wantto especially understand, you use the senseof touch; then if you add to that the senseof speech when you explain these matters toyour fellow workers, you are using anothermethod that all helps to "cement" these ideasin your memory so they will never be for-gotten.

In these few pages, I have given you 9ways for successful reading and study thathave been the foundation for the success ofmany thousands of self -trained and educatedmen. Remember to one man the printed pageis nothing more than a "mass or words," toanother it is a "gold mine" of information-a stepping stone to success. It is a source ofknowledge to make a man's job easier, safer, and definitely improve his own personalefficiency.

You have the books that have meant suc-cess to thousands of other men who havebeen willing to devote a little of their timealong the definite, well planned method ofreading or study.

Here Are Some Pointers to Get the

Best Results When You Use Coyne's

Applied Practical Electricity, as aStraight Reference Set

In the preceding pages, I have told youhow to use this 7 -Volume Set as a home studyset. In addition to the "beginner," who buysour books to learn Electricity, there are atleast as many more men who are interestedin using these books mainly or referencebooks. These types of fellows .e home own-ers, electricians, mechanics, garage owners, hardware store owners, farmers or anyonewho either has occasional use for electricalinformation or in the case of the electricianneeds a set of authentic reference books foruse on the job.

If you come under any of those classifica-tions, then here is the way you can get themost out of this reference set of Electricalbooks.

USE THE MASTER INDEX TO LOCATEELECTRICAL SUBJECTS

To begin with, the first thing you shoulddo is to review the table of contents in eachof the volumes. A table of contents is anabbreviated digest of what each volume con-tains. When you have a fair understandingof what is covered in each volume of the set,you can more quickly look up electricalinformation.

One of the features desired in any goodelectrical set of books is a good index system.Without it, any set doesn't mean much be-cause a fellow cannot find what he wants toknow, without spending a lot of time. Whenwe planned this set of books, we made sure

10

Page 12: APPLIED - americanradiohistory.com · try to arrange to set aside at least 30 minutes per day for reading and studying Applied Practical Electricity. Try to systematize either your

that it had the most modern system of in-dexing. Here is how you will find the booksindexed. First, as explained, each book has atable of contents. This outlines in a generalway what the book covers. Then at the backof each individual volume, you will find anindex of each specific subject covered in thatvolume.

HOW DO YOUDO THINGSTHINGS SO = -QUICKLY AND -SO RIGHT?

ELEMENTARY, MY DEARWATSON ! WITH MY COYNE3 -WAY INDEXED SET OFELECTRICAL BOOKSITS AS EASY AS A -B -C

In addition, we have a "master referenceindex" at the back of Volume 1. This is anindex that lists ALL OF THE SPECIFICELECTRICAL AND RADIO SUBJECTSIN ALL OF THE VOLUMES. This MasterReference Index tells you the name of theelectrical subject, the volume it is to be foundin and where it can be found in that volume. This modern 3 -way method of indexing givesthe man who wishes to use these books as areference set, an opportunity to locate anysubject covered in these books, QUICKLYand ACCURATELY.

If some particular type of electrical prob-lem presents itself, refer immediately to theMASTER INDEX. This will give you thesection and the volume of this set in whichthe subject is covered.

11

Page 13: APPLIED - americanradiohistory.com · try to arrange to set aside at least 30 minutes per day for reading and studying Applied Practical Electricity. Try to systematize either your

Then turn to that section and carefullyread the instructions outlined. Also read anyother sections of the set mentioned in thearticle. As an example, in checking over someinformation on electrical motors, some ref-erence might be made to an electrical law orprinciple contained in another volume of theset. In order to thoroughly understand theprocedure to follow in working out your elec-trical problem, you should refer to the othervolume mentioned, to get a better under-standing of the electrical law or principleinvolved.

Because of the tremendous strides thathave been made in the electrical industry inthe past several years, it is advisable thateven though you may be an electrician andplan to use this set strictly for reference pur-poses, that you give some thought to review-ing the entire set from beginning to end.If you devote just a little time each eveningto "brushing up" on electrical subjects, withwhich you are familiar, you will find the timenot only profitable but enjoyable as well. Indoing this, you will be able to get valuableinformation on subjects that you may havethought you were entirely familiar with butin reality, due to increased uses of electricityand improved methods, you may not be thor-oughly posted on specific improved appli-cations.

To sum up again for the benefit of the manwho uses our set as a reference set, he shoulddo the following things : 1. Review the tableof contents in each volume of the set; 2. studythe index in each volume of the set; and 3.be sure to go over the Master Reference In-dex in Volume 1 of the set. When you arefamiliar with these three sources of infor-mation, then, when you need electrical knowl-edge quickly, you will have a systematicmethod of locating it in a hurry.
