3. Please note that CV’s, references or other prepared material WILL NOT, at this stage, be accepted with this application. Additional documents should only be submitted when you are specifically asked to do so.

During the selection process, North Wales Police reserve the right to obtain references from all previous employers. 5. It is important to note that all applicants are required to have resided continuously in the UK for three years immediately prior to submitting an application to join the police service, with any absence from the UK being no more than six months during this time.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

Appointment will be subject to the service conditions indicated in the job advertisement/job description/person specification which may be subjectto modification.

The Chief Constable reserves the right to terminate an employees’ service at any time, subject to the provisions of any relevant legislation. Undernormal circumstances notice on either side will be required as laid down in the Contract of Employment given on appointment.

The successful applicant will enter into the Pension Scheme unless they opt not to do so. Upon appointment, new entrants’ Contract ofEmployment will be issued subject to the Police Support Staff Conditions of Service which are supplemented by North Wales Police Localagreements. These are negotiated on a collective basis by the Staff side of UNISON.

The Chief Constable expects employees to give their undivided allegiance to the Force. No restrictions will be placed on their private activities,so long as their conduct is not such as to bring discredit upon the Service in which they serve.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1974 – By virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, the provisions of theRehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 do not apply. You are therefore NOT entitled to withhold information about a previous conviction on thegrounds that it is for other purposes spent under the Act.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

The appointment of every new entrant to the Force shall be subject to a probationary period of six months. At the end of the probationary periodand subject to satisfactory reports they shall be transferred to the established staff. This rule of probationary service shall not apply to an offertransferred from the service of another police authority unless otherwise indicated on the Contract of Employment. Persons employed on FixedTerm Contracts will be subject to the terms of the contract.

Note 1 Personal details

Convictions or cautions will not necessarily preclude you fromappointment. It will depend on their nature and the circumstances ofthe offence. Failure to disclose convictions/cautions/reprimands orwarnings will, however, result in your application being terminated.

You must declare all convictions for past offences, formal cautions bythe Police (including cautions as a juvenile, i.e. under 18 years) andany bind-overs imposed by any court. You should include any trafficconvictions such as speeding, drink-drive offences, fixed penalties formotoring or disorder offences and any appearances before a CourtMartial. Only exclude parking offences.

You must also declare any charge or summons currently outstandingagainst you.

You must include spent convictions under the Rehabilitation ofOffenders Act 1974 (by virtue of the provisions of the Rehabilitation ofOffenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975) or any involvement withcivil, military or transport Police.

You must also declare if you have ever been involved in any criminalinvestigation whether or not this led to prosecution (either of yourself or others).

Some applicants do not declare information which they believe is nolonger held on record. However, our enquiries will reveal incidents fromlong ago and failure to disclose these will lead to your applicationbeing rejected. Note 3 Convictions and Cautions: You and your family

Tattoos are not a bar to appointment. However, some tattoos couldpotentially offend members of the public or colleagues, or could bringdiscredit to the Police Service. It depends on their size, nature andlocation, and sometimes on the extent.

If you have tattoos on your face, neck, forearms, upperarms or hands,you must indicate their location and provide at least two photographsof each tattoo. The first must be a closeup of the tattoo and the secondmust clearly show the location of the tattoo on your body. If you havetattoos located on other areas of your body then please contact yourlocal force. Please ensure that you describe the tattoo and thewording, giving a translation if applicable. Describe any personalsignificance or meaning that you attribute to the tattoo.

Tattoos are not acceptable if they:

• undermine the dignity and authority of the office of constable;

• could cause offence to members of the public or colleagues and/or invite provocation;

• are garish or numerous or particularly prominent;

• indicate unacceptable attitudes towards women, minority groups or any other section of the community;

• indicate alignment with a particular group that could give offence to members of the public or colleagues; and/or

• are considered to be discriminatory, rude, lewd, crude, racist, sexist, sectarian, homophobic, violent or intimidating.

Note 4 Tattoos

To be eligible for appointment you must be a British citizen or acitizen of a country that is a member of the European EconomicArea, or Switzerland. Commonwealth citizens and other foreignnationals are also eligible but only if they are resident in the UKfree of restrictions.

If you are a Commonwealth citizen or other foreign national,you must provide proof that you have no restrictions on your

stay in the UK. You should therefore send a copy of yourpassport showing that your stay is free of restrictions.Do not send your actual passport with this application.Other documentary evidence of your status may be required.

Give the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two refereesand include the position they hold, if known.

They should not:

• be your current or previous employer;

• be a police officer; or

• be related to you.

You should have known them for at least three years.

HM Forces

Applications from members of the services who have 12 months ormore before discharge may still be accepted, at the discretion of thechief officer. Please enclose confirmation of your projected date ofdischarge (e.g. a letter from your commanding officer).

Due to the nature of employment with HM Forces, it must beemphasised that security checks will be made with the appropriatemilitary authority at an early stage in the selection process. This is inaddition to your current employer’s reference, if different.

It is at the discretion of the chief officer as to whether successfulapplicants are allowed to remain on the Reserve List.

Note 8 Employment

Note 9 Disability

Unless the chief officer decides otherwise, you will not normally beeligible for appointment as a police officer if you have any of thefollowing business interests:

• You hold any office or employment for hire or gain (other than as a police officer) or you carry on any business.

• Your spouse or any other relative living with you keeps a shop or similar in the area of the police force in question.

• You, your spouse or any relative living with you holds or has a financial interest in any licence or permit relating to liquor licensing, refreshment houses or betting and gaming or the regulation of places of entertainment in the area of the police force in question.

However, the chief officer may decide to allow the business interest, if he/she thinks it is compatible with being a member of the force.

Note 6 Business interests

Police officers are in a privileged position with regard to access toinformation and could be considered potentially vulnerable tocorruption. Applicants to the Police Service should not therefore beunder pressure from undischarged debts or liabilities and should beable to manage loans and debts sensibly.

Police Regulations also state that a member of a police force shall notwilfully refuse or neglect to discharge any lawful debt. Your applicationwill therefore be checked to determine and verify your financialposition.

Most applicants have debts, such as mortgages, undischarged studentor other loans, and credit/store card debts. Debts which are within yourmeans and are manageable are not a bar to appointment.

• Applicants who have existing County Court judgments outstanding against them or who have been registered as bankrupt and their bankruptcy debts have not been discharged will not be considered.

• Applicants who have discharged County Court judgments may be considered.

• Applicants who have been registered as bankrupt and their bankruptcy debts have been discharged will only be considered after three years from discharge of the debt.

• Applicants who are the subject of a current Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) may not be considered.

Note 7 Financial position

The Police Service has a policy of prohibiting any of their officers orstaff from becoming members of the British National Party (BNP),Combat 18 or the National Front, whose aims, objectives orpronouncements may contradict the duty to promote race equality.

If you are a member of the BNP or similar, your application will berejected.
