Cacaxtla, Mexico.

A good deal of what we know about the small city-state of Cacaxtla in

Mexico comes from its colorful, complex murals. !er ",### years ago,

Cacaxtla grew in a modest way with temples, palaces, and some smallpyramids.

$he lmeca-%icalanca people li!ed in Cacaxtla as warriors and

Meticulous builders. $heir society appears to ha!e been di!ided into

distinct social strata, but little else is known about them.

$heir magnificent murals depict colorful scenes of battle, trade, and

worship. $he &attle Mural is one of the grandest at 2 meters tall and 2#

meters wide. 't shows a gory scene of armed (aguar warriors

pre!ailing o!er defenseless bird warriors.

 Cacaxtla would appear to ha!e a powerful army, a !ibrant economy, and asophisticated culture. &ut at least one art history professor, Claudia

&rittenham, thinks the portrayal represents the people of Cacaxtla as they

wished to be rather than as they truly were. )*e sometimes ha!e a terrible habit of 

thinking of art as though it+s somehow separate from life, as if it+s decorati!e and not

an essential thing, she said. )'n the pre-modern world, that+s not true. All art is

political, and the art can be an acti!e agent in creating a sense of community.
