Demand-driven
• Prove that the project is demand-driven:– Who needs it?
– What is lacking today – market failure?
• Reflect this throughout the application:– Observer Partners
– Co-creation/bottom up process
– Target groups and how they will be involved
Innovation
• What is new about your project? – Compared to state of play of (scientific) research
– Compared to previous projects
• What is your added value to what alreadyexists?
• How will you use existing outputs/results?
• How will you go beyond?
Relevance
• Does this fit Programme Strategy?
• Does this contribute to EU/national/regional/local policies and strategies?
• Does this add to previously funded projects? What’s new?

Other ways to find Partners
• Other Interreg programmes (shsh…..)• Twinnings• Professional associations e.g. RTPI• Policy networks e.g. Eurocities• University partnerships• LEA exchange agreements• Enterprise Europe network• ESPON, Eurostat, Cordis
Cross-border Cooperation
• Why in a cross border programme?– Added value?
– Why not local, regional, national?
– Why not in another programme?
– How to put it into practice?
– Not only exchange of knowledge and experiences
– Also: joint development and implementation of solutions
Exercise
Find 4 good reasons for/ways of cross border cooperation in a row!
We are all confrontedwith the same problem
We need to exchange experiences
We need joint effort of an international consortium
We need a multi-disciplinary approach
Cross fertilisation isnecessary to find new ways of working
The UK partners willtrial X, the BE partnerswill pilot Y
We will develop a knowledge repositoryfor sharing good practices
A cross border approach is essential to the success of the project
To reach a critical massTo develop a joint solution to a commonproblem
To cluster SME’s on demand side ofrenewable energy
To bring together the expertise of FR, NL, UK, BE/FL
Our 5 NL partners willcooperate with the UK partner
A demonstrator will berealised in FR
A cross border approach is crucial to realise a knowledgetransfer
The issues are common& require a broaderperspective beyondcountry borders

Durability
• Durability of project outputs
• Durability of project results
Durability
• Durability of project outputs
• → Long-lasting effects of project’s outputs beyondproject duration– Will the outputs be maintained after project’s end?
– Who will be responsible for updates?
– Who will be the ‘owner’?
– Will outputs be embedded in daily practices?
– How will funding continue?
Durability
• Durability of project results
• → Long-lasting effects of project’s results beyondproject duration– Clarify whether and how the change brought by the project
will be long-lasting
– Describe concrete measures taken during and after the project to ensure and/or strengthen the durability
• Institutional structures
• Financial resources
Communications
• Extend reach of your result
• Who needs to know?
• Who else can benefit?
• How will you make sure they do?
• Not an add-on – critical to scale of result

Common reasons for negative feedback
• Intervention logic not clear enough; outputs and results not tangible Need and demand not sufficiently evidenced
• Partnership not robust/ wide enough
• Poor quality translation / writing
• Project trying to cover too broad an issue; not focused enough
Lessons from past Calls
• Step 1 is more than a ‘concept note’ / expression of interest
• Define market failure and target groups
• Distinguish between outputs and results; set baselines and targets for results
• Partnership concept: types of places and types of org where the problem is worst/ best outcome/ has most potential/ leaders can help followers
Lessons from past Calls
• Explain territorial aspect of especially Priority 1
• Implement not create strategies
• The end of the activities is not the end of the project … (ensure take-up of results)
What to concentrate on before step 1
• Look at Co-operation Programme and ProgrammeManual
• Get Intervention Logic Lite or PNQ from Paula, or use Concept Note Template
• Register your project idea on the website and get on the mailing list
• Talk to the Territorial Facilitators about eligibility and suitability of your ideas
What to concentrate on before step 1
• Come to project fairs and workshops
• Start finding partners and having meetings/ developing the ideas into action plans
• Check Programme website for updates; workshops, application forms, guidance notes, call dates
What to concentrate on now for your CN
• Study Co-operation Programme for the right SO, types of action and results
• Read Programme Manual
• Define the vision, market failure and results with partners
• Draft Concept Note form off-line
What to concentrate on now for your CN
• Chase partners to developing their ideas into action plans which fit
• Edit/deal with word count later
• Talk through draft with a Territorial Facilitator
• Check Programme website for updates, application forms, guidance notes, decision dates
Thank you for your attention!
