On the 11th of October, Harry Taak and Aishwarya Maheswaren interviewed our inspirational Principal. Ms. Macfarlane expressed her honest opinion and her deepest thoughts and feelings

about the school.

We started off by asking her simple questions that went like this…

MEET

MS.MACFARLANE

What’s your favourite part of the school so far?

“The best is when I get to attend lessons and see students learning.”

I hear you’re a part of the London club, what’s your favourite

part of London and would you take your students there?

“Well, on the 20th of October I am taking some students up the river

Thames and the Tate Modern art gallery.”

Have all the students lived up to their full potential?

“Definitely!”

Has everything gone as it was expected to be?

“It has gone 100% better than I had expected.”

Can you describe the school in just 3 words?

After a few days of thinking time Ms Macfarlane said …

“Infectious learning community.”

How long have you been teaching?

“Twenty three years.”

By Harry Taak & Aishwarya Maheswaren

Ms Macfarlane has been a teacher for a long time,

She is very impressed with the students’ dedication to learning.

We’ve all got questions that we would like the answer to. In the first article of the series, we an-swer the question,

Why do we yawn? No-one really knows for sure why we really yawn. But there are many theories about why we do it. One of the theories is that we get bored or tired, that we don’t breathe as deeply as we usually do. As this theory goes, our bodies take in less oxygen, because our breathing has slowed. Therefore, yawning helps us bring oxygen into the blood and take away the carbon dioxide out of the blood. Yawning is an involuntary reflex (meaning that it is something that we really can’t control) to help us control our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Another theory is that yawning stretches the lungs. Stretching and yawning may be a way to flex muscles and joints, and to increase oxygen levels or to help us feel more awake. There is one other idea that seems to be true. Yawning can be ‘sort of’ contagious. If you yawn in class, you could notice other people doing it too. Even thinking about yawning, could make you yawn. So you could be yawning now as you read this!

As it was a tie, a names was drawn from a hat and Unais won the jar. The next time at Isaac Newton Academy we have a fundraising competition, we hope a lot more people will enter the competition. The Social Enterprise Club is on a Monday. If you want to do business, want to make money, if you have a great business mind and would like to raise money for charity and local community, this club is right for you.

The Sweet Jar Challenge took place between the 12th November and 17th Novem-ber. The object of the challenge was to estimate/guess the number of sweets in the jar. Participants paid £1.00 a guess. There were a lot of guesses and altogether, there was £67 raised by the Social Enterprise team, who put the whole fund-raising idea together. Altogether, there were three people who guessed it right: Unais, Hamza and Ms Abbot Jones.

On Thursday 20th September, all 8 form groups had the challenge of competing against each other in the ultimate MATHS RELAY! Everyone thought it was awesome and had a great time. There were four rounds of questions about the times tables and they were very challenging. All the students and teachers loved the whole competition and really hope that there’s an opportunity to do it again. The Winners were 7N. They played well and were good sports. Well Done 7N ! Isaac Newton was his name, He worked hard and intelligence came. He started by making a mechanical kite, Later he discovered the colours of light. Isaac was born in 1642, It was a hard life but he came through. When he was born he lost his dad, His mother remarried and that made him sad. In Woolsthorp village he went to school, In Grantham High School he was a jewel. He read a book called the Mysteries of Nature and Art, On which Newton modeled a professional cart. He went to Cambridge University, The college he went to was called Trinity.

The law of gravity is what he discovered, For all those years he had suffered. His gravity laws described stars and planets’ relations Newton built a telescope and did lots of calculations. Hundreds of years later, new theories came that are great, But Newtonian ideas have never gone out of date. Newton’s inspiration came from the Mysteries of Nature and Art, He worked hard all his life with might and heart. Isaac Newton died when he was eighty-four, Still, years later, his theories can’t be ignored. By Zaynah Chaudhry

Mr Coughlin, Mr Robinson and Mr Morgan have organised the great Big Band

Project. In each class there are:

8 Saxophones

4 Trumpets

4 Trombones

2 Drums

2 Pianos

2 Guitars

1 Bass

All 180 students have received an instrument and will be learning it over a period of 2 years. We all at INA have already learnt to play one particular song, “Oh When the Saints”. Hopefully, in the fu-

ture, we will have 180 magnificent musicians who play their instrument brilliantly.

gets bullied by a bloke named Steve

Adams. However, his dad and his

team of magna.com made a new

game featuring extraordinary

graphics and outstanding bosses.

Phoenix soon gets addicted this

mysterious game, but it is evil and

wants to suck Phoenix into it, and

the evil man behind this scheme is

none other than... you’ll have to

find the rest out by yourself. Can

Phoenix defeat this evil person?

Ms Chamberlain Adores Biometrics

Mahrukh and Naveen interviewed Ms Chamberlain on Tuesday 16 October 2012. She answered all of our questions honestly, just as we hoped. She is part of the Senior Leadership Team. Her role is the Finance and Resources Director (FRD). We asked her questions about her passion: INA’s new biometric system.

Why did you choose the biometric system? It was chosen before I got my job. How does the system work? My understanding is that when you first put your fingerprint on the reader, it turns it into an encrypted code. It is then recognized by you. When you put your finger, it recognises the code. Do you like the system? Why? I do like it, because you’ve always got your finger, and you can’t lose it and it’s quicker. Will you use the system for the next couple of years? Definitely . On a scale of ten how much would you rate it? Why? 8/10 it is really good to have a cashless system. You don’t have to worry about losing or breaking cards. I did not give it ten because sometimes it does not read the finger properly In conclusion Ms. Chamberlain is a fan of the biometric system.

Alan Gibbons comes to INA

On Thursday 27th September 2012, Alan Gibbons, the author who wrote Shadow of the Minotaur, came to Isaac Newton Academy. It was a great day and many people loved his visit. Alan Gibbons held an assembly in the morning explaining his life and how he became an author. Furthermore, everyone wanted to get his signature because after reading Shadow of the Minotaur, everyone was completely in love with his fantastic, amazing book! In addition, students at INA created their response to Shadow of the Minotaur. Some people did fantas-tic drawings and art work: We really liked his visit and we hope he writes more great books.

TION TO CLUBS

Film club: Aishwarya Maheswaren and Harry Taak love film club because they get to watch different movies and review them! The theme this term is fantasy and they recently watched Edward Scissor Hands which is great movie from their point of view! Aren't we so lucky to have all these amazing clubs? (and these are just a few of them!)

A few words from Ms. Abbot-Jones… How did you come up with these ideas for extra curricular clubs? For the first term, I came up with these ideas from my old school and by talking to the teachers to get their opinions. Now that the students have arrived, I have been asking them for their opinion too! Why do you think it is important for students to attend these curricular clubs? It’s a great way to try something new and it’s the first term so it’s a good way to socialise with other students. What are planning to change in the future? We are going to start some new clubs like dance club, arts and craft, debating club, engineering club and Young Apprentice. Also next term we are also going to have some student leaders, such as Jaykishan Gohil, who is going to be leading the origami club. Are you happy with the end results of these clubs and why? Yes, everyone is enjoying their clubs and they all are attending them. The best thing is, that this is the only Academy that has these extra Curricular clubs– no other schools have these clubs!

FILM CLUB

SPECIAL!

REVIEWS

WE LOVE FILM

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Reviews

‘When I watched Charlie and the Chocolate factory, I thought it was very funny for many rea-sons and I find it hard to find a fault with the film. My favourite character is Grandma Georgina because of her being in her own little world and the random comments she makes during conversations. I especially like it when Grandma Georgina said ‘I like grapes’ and ‘despicable’. Grandpa George says “You don’t know what you’re talking about’ and then grandma Geor-gina says ‘Dragonflies’. Overall I enjoyed the film because of it’s quirkiness. I highly recommend this film and that’s why I’m giv-ing it a five star rating.’

By Amreen

‘This is a great film that has comedy and drama all jammed up together! This is a five star movie, starring one of my fa-vourite actors, Johnny Depp! I personally love Tim Burton’s work as he directed my favour-ite movie ‘Batman Returns’. However, I wish that the Umpa Lumpas were orange like they were in the original movie. Overall, this is a great film and I would recommend it!’

Madagascar Film Review

Madagascar is a great film. It is a very exciting and fun film to watch. However, it is quite sad at the start because Marty leaves the gang to go and explore the rest of the world. Eventually, they all unite at the sta-tion and they get marooned on an island where they encounter lemurs. I would recommend this film to children of up to twelve. It is really good and I’d say that it is really worth watching it since it provides great family entertainment and I guarantee you that you’ll enjoy it. Other people’s quotes: ‘’It’s a hilarious film for small children’’ Abdul ‘’It’s funny, sad and entertaining’’ Ms Spencer ‘’It’s fun’’ Sabba ‘’Brilliant’’ Sam ‘’It’s an exotic family film that anyone will love’’ Rutina ‘’It’s great’’ Aishwarya I hope you enjoy watching Madagascar! By Naveen Haran

Mario Kart Wii Review Mario Kart Wii is a very fun and entertaining game that can be played by children and adults alike. It might not really interest teenagers but everyone else should be interested. It allows you to race against the Wii, which is very easy, or race against friends and family, or connect to friends over the Internet and race against them. It provides very well known characters and it has many race tracks to choose from. If you don’t want to race, you can collect coins in ‘’Battle Mode’ where you have to compete against other people or the system to collect coins. The game also provides teams, which is good if you’re not good at the game but bad if you are good at the game, since it either pulls your ranking up or down, depending on how good the rest of your team mates are. It is so much fun, especially ‘Coins Mode’ because it is challenging and entertaining since your whole team has to race against the clock to collect more coins than the opposing team. The game is tremendously improved because of the nicely made power-ups. In this game you get to race against friends or the system and you can battle in teams to collect the most coins and you get to make the other team lose using powerful power ups and by crashing into the karts from the opposing team.

However, there are some downsides, when you play against oth-er people the whole game gets three times harder and also, even though there are many tracks, most of the older tracks that aren’t exclusive to Wii are not really good. I hope you like playing the game and you don’t care about the downsides, since in the end it’s a really great game.

Diwali is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Diwali is an official holiday in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji. In some languages it is known as Deepawali, but in most languages it is known as something similar to Diwali It was based on the story of Rama and Sita. It is the festival of light, therefore many people launch fire-works to celebrate the event. This year, it was celebrated on November the 13th based on the Georgian calendar. But, on the Hindu calendar, which is based on the moon, Diwali falls on October 26th.

This is the story of Rama and Sita: There was a prince called Rama and he was the son of a great king. He was next in line to be king. Alt-hough, the king’s new wife wanted her son to be king, not Rama. She managed to trick the king into sending Rama into the forest for fourteen years of exile. Sita, his wife went with him to live in the forest. But, this was not an ordinary forest, this was a forest that contained demons. The worst demon of them all was the ten headed Demon King, Ravana. He had twenty arms and ten heads. To protect Sita from Ravana, Rama left Sita in a magical circle that stopped all things evil from getting inside. Ravana sent a deer along near the magic circle. Sita was amazed by the deer and went to chase it, leaving the circle. She ran into a trap. Ravana had messed with the deer’s mind and instructed it to go to Rama and Sita and then come back. Ravana took Sita in his chariot to the island of Sri Lanka, planning to marry her. Sita had cleverly left a trail of her jewellery which she continuously dropped from the chariot. Rama fol-lowed the trail until he met the monkey king, Hanuman. Hanuman agreed to help find Sita. After a long search, Hanuman found Sita imprisoned on the island of Sri Lanka. The monkeys couldn’t reach the island of Sri Lanka because of the sea separating them. They decided to build a bridge across the sea from India to Sri Lanka. All the animals in India came to help build the bridge. As soon as the bridge was built, they crossed over to Sri Lanka As soon as they reached Sri Lanka, they fought a huge battle against Ravana. It was a hard battle and af-ter fighting for a long time, Rama won and Ravana drowned in the sea between India and Sri Lanka. Rama rescued Sita and all the animals rejoiced. They soon returned to India and were back in the forest. They discovered that their fourteen years of exile was over, so they decided to make their way home. It would have been so dark if the animals in the forest hadn’t lit oil lamps to light their way home. After they reached the end of the forest, they found that the villagers had also lit oil lamps to guide their way back to the palace. Rama and Sita arrived at the palace to find the king die on the spot. The king’s wife got very angry that the king didn’t die until Rama and Sita came back from exile, meaning that her son would not be crowned king. That very morning, Rama was crowned the king. The king’s wife was so annoyed that she left the palace and lived with her son in a little hut as she had no money as all the money came from the king! Howev-er, Rama and Sita lived happily ever after. Diwali is the festival of light because of all the oil lamps that were lit on Rama and Sita’s way back. I hope you know all about Diwali now!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas holiday from everyone at the INA Student Newspaper team. During Christmas time there are usually lots of fun activities to do if you go into Ilford town centre. There are also some big attractions at theme parks based on Christmas. Or, you could just go to Oxford Street and see the Christmas lights. Christmas is also a great time to buy treats and presents as all shops have got an offer so that you can save £100’s of pounds on your favourite items. If you’re going to be staying indoors during Christmas, I recommend that you watch some of the great films showing on TV and I also recommend going online and downloading some festive activities from the Internet. We hope you really enjoy Christmas, no matter if you go shopping, look at the lights, do some fun activi-ties, go to a theme park or watch TV. We guarantee you’ll have a really fun day.
