SUGGESTIONS FOR USING BLACKLINE

MASTERS TO CONSTRUCT MANIPULATIVE

MATERIALS

Materials to Use

You can make your materials durable by using heavy paper, suchas cardstock, and laminating them. Cardstock is available atphotocopy and office supply stores. After photocopying yourmaterials, laminate them first and then cut them.

Store your materials in zip-top plastic bags. Put enough ma-terials for one child in each bag. Quart-size bags work well forindividual sets, and larger bags, such as gallon size, can holdmultiple sets. Usually one or two gallon bags will be enough tohold a class set. Freezer bags are a good choice, because theyare quite thick and durable.

Always make extras, because some will get lost or damaged.Make at least two extra full sets so that you’ll have replace-ments. It’s much better to make some extras originally than tohave to scramble to find a few replacements in the middle of alesson or make a few extras for the next day’s lesson.

Using Color

Consider the colors you choose for the manipulatives you make.Colors add interest to materials. If you will be using overheadmanipulative materials along with the materials you make, choose paper that matches the colors of the overhead materials. It is easier for children if the materials they’re using are the samecolor as those the teacher is using on the overhead projector.

Enlarging the Blackline Masters

The Blackline Masters in this book are printed in groups of fouron each page, so you will need to enlarge a Blackline Master be-fore making multiple copies. Choose the Blackline Masteryou’d like to copy, and then enlarge it to 200% on a photocopier.

At the end of this book, a few selected Blackline Masters areprovided on heavy cardstock and perforated. Take a few minutes

Because photocopiers vary, start by making one enlargementand check it before making multiple copies. Make sure to copythis larger image onto white paper for the best quality copies. Then make multiple copies on whatever color paper you choose.

TIPS FOR USING EACH BLACKLINE MASTER

The following section provides you with tips on using eachBlackline Master.

Base-Ten Blocks

Base-ten blocks are discussed in Chapters 6, 9, and 12. Base-tenblocks come in many colors, including yellow, orange, blue, andgreen. If actual base-ten blocks are available to the children, make sure to use the same color paper in your laminated versions.Be sure you make lots of extras, because they tend to need re-placement most often.

Ten Frames

Ten frames are discussed in Chapter 5. Copy these onto light-colored paper and laminate them.

Hundreds Charts

Hundreds charts (0–99 and 1–100) are discussed in Chapters 5and 6. Copy these onto light-colored paper and laminate them.Children can write on laminated copies with crayons and rub thewriting off.

Ten-by-Ten Multiplication Array

The ten-by-ten multiplication array is discussed in Chapter 7. Useany color you’d like. Provide each child with an L-shaped piece ofcardstock or tagboard to use with their array.

Dice Master

The dice master is discussed in Chapter 8. Copy this on anycolor but do not laminate. Cut out the dice master and fold care-fully on the lines. You can use a straight edge or ruler to makethe folds nice and crisp.

Fraction Circles

Fraction circles are discussed in Chapters 10 and 11. Copy eachdifferent circle (denominator) on a different color paper. You maywant to purchase a set of Fraction Circles Plus™ to use with yourfraction circles. If so, use the colors shown above right for the dif-ferent circles.

Laminate each circle before cutting (children can cut thesethemselves). Store each different circle (denominator) in its ownzip-top bag, with all bags in one large bag. (A gallon zip-top bagworks well, as does a large 9- × 12-inch mailing envelope.)

Fraction Bars

Fraction bars are discussed in Chapters 10 and 11. Copy eachdifferent fraction bar (denominator) on a different color paper.Laminate each bar before cutting (children can cut these them-selves). Store each different bar (denominator) in its own zip-topbag, with all bags in one large bag. (A gallon zip-top bag workswell, as does a large 9- × 12-inch) mailing envelope.)

Decimal Grids

Decimal grids are discussed in Chapter 12. Make lots of copiesof these on white or whatever light color you’d like. These areconsumables—children will use shading to represent a deci-mal—so have multiple copies available for each child.

Centimeter Graph Paper

Centimeter graph paper is discussed in Chapters 12 and 15.Make lots of copies of these on white or whatever light coloryou’d like. These are consumables, so have multiple copiesavailable for each child.

Geoboard Template

The geoboard template is discussed in Chapter 14. Make lots ofcopies of these on white or whatever light color you’d like. These are consumables, so have multiple copies available foreach child.

Geoboard Recording Paper

Geoboard recording paper is discussed in Chapter 14. Make lotsof copies of these on white or whatever light color paper you’dlike. These are consumables, so have multiple copies availablefor each child.

Tangram

Tangrams are discussed in Chapter 14. Tangrams come inmany colors, and you could have different colored sets avail-able in your classroom. Make sure to laminate them before cut-ting, and store each individual set in a zip-top bag.

Inch Graph Paper

Inch graph paper is discussed in Chapter 15. Make lots of copiesof these on white or whatever light color you’d like. These areconsumables, so have multiple copies available for each child.
