Appendix A Rules of Play for the Rematch

1. The rate of play shall be 40 moves per player in the first two hours of that player's time (the First Period), then 20 moves per player in the next one hour of that player's time (the Second Period), then all the remaining moves in an additional 30 minutes per player (the Final Period). Any time not consumed during the first period is carried forward to the second period and any time not consumed from the second period is carried forward to the final period.

2. Kasparov has the right of choice of the chess clock to be used during the Match. In the event of there being a faulty clock and if a replacement of the same type of clock is unavailable, the ACM has the right to substitute a chess clock of a different type.

3. During the opening ceremony, Kasparov will draw lots to determine his color in the first game of the Match and thereafter the colors will alternate, irrespective of game postponement or forfeiture.

4. Deep Blue shall be operated by an operator provided for this purpose by IBM. Provided that it is not Kasparov's tum to move, the operator may be replaced at any time or times during a game or the Match at IBM's discretion.

5. The operator, at his option, shall sit at the chess table facing Kasparov. Although the operator is free to move about in a nondistracting manner when it is Deep Blue's tum to move, the operator may not leave the table or move in a distracting manner when it is Kasparov's tum to move.

6. In the event of a technical fault or problem in any way relating to Deep Blue, the operator may, provided that it is not Kasparov's tum to move, communicate with any person he chooses in such a manner as to avoid any distraction which may reasonably be regarded as disturbing to Kasparov.

7. When it is Deep Blue's tum to move, Deep Blue's chess clock must remain running at all times even though there may be a technical fault (excluding

power failure or other conditions which make the game unplayable) which prevents Deep Blue's move from being made in the normal way.

8. When Kasparov has made his move, the IBM operator must promptly communicate this move to Deep Blue via equipment provided for this purpose, such equipment to operate in a manner which cannot reasonably be regarded as disturbing to Kasparov. In addition, the operator is required to promptly communicate to Deep Blue information about draw offers and draw refusals.

9. When Deep Blue has chosen its move and communicated its move to the operator, the operator shall make Deep Blue's move on the chess board and then press Deep Blue's side of the chess clock.

10. If the operator makes a mistake either in communicating Kasparov's move to Deep Blue or in making Deep Blue's move on the chess board, when the mistake is discovered, the Arbiter shall set up the pieces on the chess board to their positions immediately before the mistake, and adjust the players' clock times. If it is possible for the Arbiter to determine the times that should be showing on the players' clocks, then the Arbiter shall adjust the clocks accordingly. If this is not possible, then each player shall be allotted a time proportional to that indicated by his clock when the error was discovered such that the proportion is the same as the ratio of the number of moves made by that player up to the time the error was made divided by the number of moves made by that player up to the time the error was discovered. In addition, Kasparov will receive a recovery bonus of five minutes on his remaining clock time to compensate for the disturbance caused to his concentration.

11. At any time during the game when it is Deep Blue's tum to move, the operator may indicate to Deep Blue how much time remains on either or both sides of the chess clock.

12. If, during play, Deep Blue is unable to perform in the expected manner, for example being unable to accept a legal move, then the operator may set up in the computer the current board position and status along with the clock times of both players and any other information required by the program, but all such work is permitted only while it is not Kasparov's tum to move.

13. At any time during play, IBM may replace any or all of the computer hardware and/ or software being used to play the games provided that any work carried out in the playing hall is only that which is absolutely

necessary and is carried out only when it is not Kasparov's tum to move. Any work which can be carried out via the mirror terminal in the Deep Blue control room shall be carried out there. In the case work is required to be performed in the playing hall, Kasparov will receive a recovery bonus of five minutes on his remaining clock time to compensate for the disturbance caused to his concentration by the onsite repairs.

14. The operator may offer a draw, accept a draw or resign on behalf of Deep Blue. This may be done with or without consulting Deep Blue.

15. Kasparov and the operator shall both keep a written record of the moves of the game at least up to move 60, after which it is optional for each of them to do as he wishes.

16. In the manner concerning the laws of chess and their interpretation, including those matters referred to in 1-15, the decision of the Arbiter shall be final.

17. The Arbiter shall be appointed by the ACM and shall be a person who is acceptable to the ACM, IBM and Kasparov. If the appointed Arbiter is unwell or unable to officiate for any reason, then the ACM may, at its sole discretion, appoint a replacement Arbiter but shall, if practical, consult with the players or their representatives over the choice of the replacement Arbiter.

18. The ACM shall be responsible for resolving chess rules during the Match and shall be responsible for the appointment of the arbiter and together with the arbiter will have the responsibility to oversee and to officiate the six games comprising the Match.

19. In the event Kasparov or IBM disagres with a decision of the Arbiter, the ACM Appeals Board will be called upon to make a final decision.

20. The ACM Appeals Board will monitor the playing hall and the accessory facilities used by both sides to ensure compliance with Match rules and to ensure that no inappropriate conduct by either side takes place. Any irregularities will be immediately acted upon and reported to IBM and Kasparov. The members of the Appeals Board will be agreeable to both sides.

Appendix B Algebraic Chess Notation

The games in this book are described using what is called algebraic chess notation. The rows, columns, and squares of the chess board are assigned numbers and letters as shown here.

The six pieces, the king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn, are abbreviated respectively as K, Q, R, B, N, and P. They are usually capitalized, though Deep Blue's printout in Appendix M shows white pieces in lowercase characters and black pieces in uppercase characters. A chess move can be characterized as being one of eight types.

1. Transfer by a non pawn from one square to another. The moving piece is named, followed by the destination square. If two pieces can move to the same square, the original column of the moving piece is

given before the destination square. If that leaves the move ambiguous, the row is given instead. In Deep Blue's printout of Game 6 of the Rematch, "full" algebraic notation is used where the moving piece is indicated first followed by the "from-square" and then the "to-square."

2. Transfer by a pawn from one square to another. The new square of the advancing pawn describes the move.

3. Capture by a nonpawn. The moving piece is named, followed by an "x" followed by the destination square. If two pieces can move to that square, the original column of the moving piece is given before the "x". If the move is still ambiguous, the row is given instead. Deep Blue adds the captured piece following the destination square.

4. Capture by a pawn. The original column of the capturing pawn is given, followed by an "x" followed by the destination square. This format is also adequate for en passant captures. Deep Blue adds the captured piece following the destination square.

5. Castling move. Kingside: 0-0; queenside: 0-0-0.

6. Promotion. The name of the new piece, a Q, R, B, or N, is added following the destination square.

7. Checking move. A // +// is appended to the end of the move description.

S. Mating move. A //#" is appended to the end of the description.

Consider the position shown at the bottom of the previous page. Assume Black last advanced its pawn from f7 to f5, or, in our notation, played f5. Then White's moves are KbS, bSQ, bSR, bSB, bSN, bxcSQ, bxcSR, bxcSB, bxcSN+, Rdxe6+, Rd7+, RdS, Rexe6+, Rxf5, dxe6, exf5, bxc6, g7, BfS, Bg7.

Appendix H Chess Program Strength, Search Depth, and Computer Speed

I n 1996, following Deep Blue's loss to Kasparov in Philadelphia, Bob Hyatt and I carried out the experiment described in this appendix. Its objective was to estimate how much the playing strength of a chess

program, such as Deep Blue, increases as a result of deeper search or, equivalently, as a result of playing on a faster computer [1]. At that time, Deep Blue was carrying out approximately 10-level to 12-level searches. It was expected that the Deep Blue that would participate in New York would be faster than the one in Philadelphia, possibly twice as fast, and thus able to search deeper. But how much stronger would it play? Our answer, based on the analysis that follows, is at least 100 rating points.

We fed several hundred positions into Crafty from games that appear in Kasparov Versus Deep Blue: Computer Chess Comes of Age. Positions were selected from the 55 games presented in Chapters 8 and 9. Positions on moves 7, 14,21, ... with White to move were selected no matter how easy or difficult. Crafty searched each position to a depth of 14 levels. Some positions took hours of computing to complete the deep search. Hyatt recruited a number of people who had Crafty on their systems to help us.

Data was collected on how often Crafty selected a different move, that is, changed its mind, when going from one search depth to the next. Similar data had been obtained using Belle a decade earlier, but only to a depth of 11 levels. In 1998 Dark Thought provided data similar to Belle and Crafty [2-5]. Because of the increased computer speeds in recent years, the data collected in the 1996 and 1998 experiments went three levels deeper than the data collected in the earlier experiment with Belle.

Crafty was found to change its mind when going from one search depth to the next, with the percentages shown in the table on the following page. It can be seen that even at search depths greater than eight levels, the percentages fall off quite slowly with increasing search depth, all the way up to 14 levels. The rate of change decreases to zero as the search depth increases, butthe decrease goes quite slowly. It strongly suggests that deeper searches - or, equivalently, faster computers - will continue to yield significant improvements in the level of play.

Page 37: Appendix A - Springer978-0-387-21790-1/1.pdf · White: Boris Gulko Black: Deep Thought Reti Opening 1 Nf3 2

292 Deep Blue: An Artificial Intelligence Milestone

The table on the next page shows that in 15.3% of the positions, Crafty changed its mind when going from the 13th level to the final, 14th level. That is, on about one move in six, Crafty's 14-level search found a different move from its 13-level search. During the course of a 40-move game, Crafty's 14-level search would select six or seven moves that were different from its 13-level search. This 15.3% figure was not much less than the 17.3% figure, the frequency at which Crafty picked moves on a nine-level search different from the ones selected on an eight-level search.

Just because the computer picked a different move when searching deeper doesn't mean that the deeper choice was the better move. But statistically that seems to be the case: deeper search yields better moves. Further, the probability that the change in moves was better can be assumed to be independent of search depth.

The data allow us to estimate how much stronger a program would perform as search depth increases or, equivalently, as computer speeds increase. Let's see how. Suppose some chess program that searches to a depth of four levels has a rating of 1320 - this is approximately correct for Crafty. Suppose also that the same program, when searching to a depth of five levels, has a rating of, say, 1570 -also approximately correct for Crafty . Now suppose one observes that when making moves in a large number of random game positions, a program searching to a depth of five levels picks moves different from those picked by the same four-level program, say, 30% of the time. Further, suppose the same program, now searching to a depth of six levels, always selects exactly the same move as the program searching to a depth of five levels. From this information, it follows that the rating of the six-level program should be the same as the rating of five-level program. That is, the six-level program should also be rated at 1570. That's easy.

Now suppose, instead, that the six-level program picks moves different from those picked by the fivelevel program 30% of the time -the same percent that the five-level program picked moves different

Percent of time Crafty's Search d-level search picked a

depth d different move than its (d -I)-level search.

For 347 test positions, percent of time Crafty's d-level search picked a different

from the four-level program. In this case, it seems reasonable to conclude that the rating of the six-level program should exceed the rating of the fivelevel program by the same amount that the rating of the five-level program exceeded that of the four-level program. That is, the six-level program should have a rating 250 points higher than the five-level program, or the rating of the six-level program should be 1820.

The reasoning of the previous paragraph can be generalized. Consider three versions of some program. Suppose one searches to a depth of d levels, another to a depth of d+l levels, and the third to a depth of d+2 levels. Suppose also that Q percent of the time the program searching d+ 1 levels picks moves different from the program searching d levels, and that R percent of the time the program searching d+2levels picks moves different from the program searchingd+ 1 levels. Then, given the ratings of the d-Ievel program and the (d+ I)-level program, it is reasonable to assign a rating to the (d+2)-level program using the following formula:

Rating of (d+2)-level program = Rating of (d+ I)-level program

+ (Rating of (d+ I)-level program - Rating of d-Ievel program)(R/ Q)

294 Deep Blue: An Artificial Intelligence Milestone

Using this formula, the percentages in the table on the previous page, the assumption of a rating of1320 for Crafty when searching four levels, and the assumption of a rating of 1570 for Crafty when searching five levels, Crafty's ratings at search depths of from 6 to 14 levels were computed. The results are shown in the preceding graph. They show that an additional level of search always yields a rating improvement of more than 100 points over the search depths considered. For example, a 13-level search received a rating of 2858, an additional 118 rating points over a 12-level search, which received a rating of 2740. A 14-level search received a rating of 2983, an additional 125 rating points over a 13-level search.

Of course, one would expect the increase in strength when going from a 13-level search to a 14-level search to be less than the increase when going from a 12-level search to a 13-level search. The fact that the data show otherwise is probably due to an insufficiently extensive set of test positions. It may have also been due to the odd--even factor that crops up in many mathematical analyses of the search of chess trees. The graph does show an up-down behavior at search depths greater than eight.

Now, Deep Blue was carrying outlO-level to 12-level searches for which the graph indicates Crafty ratings in the range of 2464 to 2740. These ratings are likely approximately the same for Deep Blue; Deep Blue seemed to be playing approximately 2700-level chess in Philadelphia. An increase of one level of search by Crafty would yield ratings in the range of 2601 to 2858. A proportional increase - clearly more than 100 rating points - could be expected for Deep Blue. That is, because the SP to be used in New York would be twice as fast as the SP used in Philadelphia, Deep Blue could be expected to be at least 100 rating points stronger for the Rematch.

Deep Blue Junior played two practice matches leading up to the Rematch, one with Larry Christiansen, and the other with Michael Rhode. The games are presented here. A bug appeared in the first Christiansen game when Deep Blue Junior played 13 ... f5. In the second Christiansen game, Deep Blue Junior played 14 .. . Qa5, a queen move to open space similar to 11 ... Qa5 in the first game of the Rematch! This second game saw Deep Blue Junior outmanoeuvre Christiansen in a subtle bishops and pawns endgame.

Appendix K Analysis of the Final Position of Game 2

The analysis presented here of the final position from Game 2 is a composite of the analyses presented in references [1-5] combined with some help from Fritz4.

The conclusion of the analyses is that if Kasparov had played 45 ... Qe3, then 46 Qxd6 is only good enough to draw if 46 ... ReB! is played by Black. White's other alternative, 46 Qd7+, allows Black's king to escape: 46 ... KgB 47 Qxd6 RfB 4B Qe6+ Kh7, and then White will face the same perpetual check threats as it did after 46 Qxd6 ReB.

There was some speculation that Kasparov overlooked the strength of the crucial rook move 46 ... ReB because he had convinced himself that Deep Blue, after having played so strongly in developing its crushing position, certainly wouldn't give him the opportunity to draw with such a simple and obvious ploy as 45 ... Qe3. Moreover, if 45 ... Qe3 didn't lead to a draw, then Kasparov must have believed that it was destined to lose. The rather quiet 47 h4 was recommended as White's best way to try to avoid a draw after 46 ... ReB, but this is countered by 47 ... h5, leaving White's king no way to escape perpetual checks. The alternative, 47 ... Qxe4, was also good enough to draw. Robert Byrne revised his earlier analysis and published the following drawing line after the match: 45 ... Qe3 46 Qxd6 ReB 47 h4 Qxe4 4B Ra7+ KgB 49 Qd7 Qf4+ 50 Kgl Qe3+ 51 Kh2 Qf4+ 52 Kh3 Re7 53 QcB+ Kh7 54 Rxe7 h5 55 Rxg7 Kxg7 56 Qd7 Kh6 [6].

Deep Blue would have had to see lines of play to a depth of 20 to 25 levels to realize it was facing a draw when it played 45 Ra6. Specifically, it would have had to see that after 45 Ra6 Qe3 46 Qxd6 ReB White has no move that does better than draw; that, in fact, as the analysis shows, the six moves 47 h4, 47 Qc5, 47 Qc6, 47 Qd7 +,47 Bf3 and 47 Qc7 + all lead at best to a drawn game. However, for Deep Blue to see that 47 Bf3, for example, was drawn would require the program to decide after exploring the first 16 moves 45 Ra6Qe3 46 Qxd6 ReB 47 Bf3 Qc1+ 4BKf2Qd2+ 49 Be2Qf4+ 50 Kel Qc1+ 51 Bdl Qxc3+ 52 Kfl Qc1, giving White a bishop for a pawn that it needed to look deeper at the quiet nonchecking, noncapturing move 52 ... Qcl. And if it did look deeper, it would have had to search even deeper along this line after exploring three more moves, 53 Ra7 + KgB 54 Qd7, the last of which is

again a nonchecking, noncapturing move that leaves White up a bishop for a pawn after 19 moves. In positions of this complexity, with 28 legal moves on the board for White and 31 for Black, Deep Blue was probably carrying out a 12-level brute force search followed by selective search at deeper levels. These quiet moves would have had to be picked up and searched in the selective search region of the tree that Deep Blue searched in order for the computer to see a draw. There is a good chance that they weren't.

Appendix L Difficult Positions for Deep Blue from the Rematch

Twelve positions that Deep Blue found troublesome are presented in this appendix. Each took the computer more than five minutes to choose a move. In general, they can be characterized as positions in which the evaluation by Deep Blue dropped with increasing search depth. Game4had the most troublesome positions with four and Game 2 was next with three.

Appendix M Deep Blue's Printout of Game 6 of the Rematch

Murray Campbell provided me with Deep Blue's printout of Game 6 of the rematch; it appears below. Deep Blue selected its first eleven moves from either its opening book or its extended opening book. The printout of this phase of the game has been condensed and cleaned up to show only moves by both sides and Deep Blue's guesses of its opponent's replies. The search of large trees was responsible for selecting the remaining eight moves. The material in bold lettering explains and elaborates on Deep Blue's somewhat cryptic printout.

1. e4 39/119:46 Guessing cS

[Deep Blue predicted 7 of the first 10 moves by Kasparov. It guessed Kasparov's previous move, 9 ... fxe6, and then, as the following printout shows, began a 5-level search for its own 11 th move. When Deep Blue fails to guess correctly, it begins with a 3-level search. This time it is guessing Kasparov will play 10 ... Kd8.]
