PRESIDENT’S REPORT

For those who didn’t make it, you missed a great night at the

Glen Logan restaurant in Horsham this week. It was very

interesting to hear the four Deakin University medical

students present their Community Engagement projects. They

all showed an impressive knowledge of their topic and a

commitment to rural health. About 80 Rotarians and guests

from four clubs were present so we were also able to catch up on what each club is

doing. We have some more joint projects planned. Thank you Bernie for both

providing the bus and driving us.

Saturday’s lamb marking program was enjoyed by both Rotarians and Rotaractors. It

was a beautiful morning to be working outside. We had a production line working

with Peter’s new marking cradle and Sue doing all the catching. We soon had the

lambs tailed and had plenty of time for our scones, jam and cream thanks to

Bronwyn and Peter.

Sue has received a cheque from the Rotary Club of Wyndham for $4000 for our

breakfast program and drought relief. Their support is greatly appreciated. We look

forward to having them up in April next year.

Several of our members and Honorary Rotarians are travelling to Geelong on

Tuesday to join the celebration of PP Stan Deans’ 50 years in Rotary. We

congratulate Stan on his amazing commitment to service and wish him all the best

for an enjoyable night. We look forward to a report when our members return.

Have a great week.

Deakin University Medical Students These four medical students are living in Horsham for 12 months. They are the ninth group to have participated in this innovative program and all up, there have been 34 students who have had this first hand and extended experience in the rural health setting of the Grampians region. The ideal long term vision is for graduates to return to our region as GPs or specialists. During their time in Horsham they work with GPs, see patients under the mentoring of GPs, experience all departments of a hospital and undertake a Community Engagement research project each. Their focus is on public health problems and real life clinical scenarios. Each student spoke about their particular project– a health problem that has above average prevalence in our region. They reflect on what evidence is available to address these issues and present possible strategies to help reduce prevalence.

The four topics were as follows. Contraceptive use in Australia. Rural and regional Australia has above the national average level of teenage pregnancies. The Wimmera region has one of the highest levels.

Tooth decay is a health concern across Australia and the Wimmera has above average levels.

Obesity is an increasing health concern across Australia. It’s a major concern in the Wimmera and getting worse. This project focuses on strategies for reducing obesity levels in women aged 18-45yo.

Increasing levels of cervical cancer screening in the Wimmera is needed. In our region there is a higher risk of getting cervical cancer but a lower percentages of women taking the screen tests.

Suggested strategies ranged from sugar-free chewing gum for children to increase saliva, mobile medical clinics, increased education of the public, students and GPs with up to date information and training community champions to help others. The presentations were both interesting and thought provoking.

VALE: Olive Hewitt

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Olive Hewitt earlier this week. Olive was a

long standing member of our Rotary family. Olive was always keen to attend Rotary

functions with her late husband Wilf Hewitt, and then later by herself, where she caught

up with Rotarians, partners and other Honorary Rotarians. Olive will be fondly

remembered for her friendliness, her chatty, happy nature and her genuine interest in

everyone she came across.

Sheep Report (Peter)

Last Saturday, 57 lambs were marked. Thanks to all those who

helped- Rotarians Chris H, Chris G, John T, Sue & Helen and

Rotaractors, Megan, Samantha with her family, Shane, Cooper

and Emerson. It was a bright sunny morning with morning tea

provided by Bronwyn. A good time was had by all.

Youth Committee (John A)

We have three candidates for Defying The Drift: Lachie Golder,

Josh Bibby & Angus Jardine. Wednesday Sep 12th will be a

youth night, hearing from the Yarriambiack Youth Council.

Fellowship Committee (Rob deV)

Sept 26 is our Footy night, and we’d love every member to

think about bringing friends or colleagues to the night. Get out your club scarves and beanies.

Community Service (Peter Martin)

HELP NEEDED. We have been asked if we can do a lunchtime BBQ outside the PO on Friday 7th September as part

of the ‘We Love Warracknabeal’ promotion. It’s from 11am to 1pm. Please contact Peter if you can help.

News Flash

SALESMAN DEPOSED IN SCOMO STYLE COUP !!

Last Saturday the Club's top salesman (Rob de Vries) was deposed by an outsider with inside information. Pam de Vries, who within five minutes of arriving at the shop sold a lounge suite for $350.00 surpassing Rob de V's several sales for $250.00. As per the going's on in Canberra recently, the Shop Committee did not see this coming and while the knives may be out in Canberra the shop committee has locked up all cutlery with only plastic spoons for coffee now being available. Rob de Vries has been delegated to the back bench (well would you believe the chair closest to the heater and next to the biscuit tin) while Robin Mac is constantly now looking over his shoulder, unsure of Pam's ambitions or intentions. A recount was called for, however according to our returning officer Jean, the figures are correct and the result stands. A motion has been moved to ask our newest conscriptee (Glenda) to provide a chocolate cake for our next meeting this Saturday while we consider the ramifications should we conscript Pam on to The Shop Committee, A press conference will be called once a decision is made, with the results to be printed in our next issue. (Written from the chair close to the heater and next to the biscuit tin)
