Byron Lindsay, a past I.O.O.F. Grand Master for the State of Montana (2003) displays the pure seal ivory gavels he found yesterday while cleaning out the Odd Fellows Hall in Glasgow.

A rather sad time for Glasgow Lodge #51 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, as their chapter no longer had enough members to uphold the chapter and had to shut down in 2014 after being established here 120 years ago. In the process of cleaning out the Odd Fellows Hall, Byron Lindsay came across an old letter from 1925. After reading it, he went hunting for what was written. And finally, he found them pushed way into the beck of an old wooden desk drawer! Here is the letter he found, followed by finding the treasures: "On February 26, 1894, Glasgow Lodge, No. 51, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, was duly instituted. On February 1st, 1895, Charles Mason, a fireman on the Great Northern Railway, residing at Glasgow, was initiated into the Lodge. Sometime during the year 1895 Charles Mason left

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I hope the word on the street that was told to me this weekend isn’t true because if it is, this community is in for a surprising awakening when they need professional medical attention, and we have no Dr. Mirich available to fix us up. Rumor has it that Dr. Mirich is leaving us and moving elsewhere. And just why would this be, FMDH personnel? Do you not realize what a fantastic doctor we have available right here in our community? As far as I’m concerned, you will never find a replacement as true and talented as Dr. Mirich. Generally, when the community is in need of a professional surgeon, they discuss with others the pros and cons of where to get the surgery done, distance and time it would take to go out of town for the service, etc. It is unbelievable how many people, over the seven years that Dr. Mirich has been at FMDH that the conversations always lead to staying here to have Dr. Mirich do the surgery. Why go out of town when the main man is right here in Glasgow? Not once have I ever heard anything negative about Dr. Mirich! Not once! If that doesn’t speak favorably for a doctor who has done surgeries on many of my family members and friends, then I certainly don’t know what does.

Letter to the BuzzDr. Mirich belongs HERE!

I am a polio survivor from way back in 1951. Due to this crippling disease, I was left with limps that made my walking ability very difficult. Fortunately, in 2008, I fell in my garage and broke my leg. Yes, I said “fortunately”. For you see, like Humpty Dumpty, Dr. Mirich “put me back together” and he’d only been working at FMDH for a couple of weeks prior to my accident. Immediately after viewing my X-rays, Dr. Mirich announced that although he was unfamiliar with polio, he did his research, spoke to other medical professionals and had a couple of options in mind to repair my fragile broken bones. Not only did he repair the leg, he later on recommended me to a specialist who fits patients with braces (something at my age I was not aware even existed). To make a long story short, I now wear 3 different braces on my legs, walk so much easier and have significantly more balance. My braces even fit into “pretty normal-looking” shoes. Thank you Dr. Mirich. You truly are one of my many “guardian angels” and it brings tears to my eyes to think you will be taking your medical talents elsewhere. I’m thinking it’s probably too late to protest on the sidewalk on behalf of Dr. Mirich’s leaving, but I would hope the management at FMDH would take the opportunity to make amends and to renegotiate to keep our once-in-a-lifetime Dr. Mirich right here where he belongs. FMDH it’s never too late to admit your wrong doings and make it right! ~ Kathy Steele

Because of his stupidity and clumsiness, his teacher was always yelling at him, “You’re driving me crazy, Tyrone.” One day Tyrone’s mother came to school to check on how he was doing. The teacher told his mama honestly, that her son was simply a disaster, getting very low marks, and that she had never seen such a stupid boy in her entire teaching career. The mom was so shocked at the feedback that she withdrew her son fromschool and moved out of Detroit, relocating to Cleveland. 25 years later, the teacher was diagnosed with an almost incurable cardiac disease. All the doctors strongly advised her to have open heart surgery, which only one surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic could perform. Left with no other options, the teacher decided to have the operation, which was successful. When she opened her eyes after the surgery she saw a handsome young doctor smiling down at her. She wanted to thank him, but could not talk. Her face started to turn blue, she raised her hand, trying to tell him something but quickly died. The doctor was shocked, wondering what went wrong so suddenly. Then he turned around and saw our friend Tyrone, a janitor in the Clinic, who had unplugged the life-support equipment in order to connect his vacuum cleaner.

Fall Open BurningRestrictions Are Back The Montana Department of Environmental Quality reminds people that the annual fall open burning restrictions became effective on September 1, 2015. The restrictions are put in place to determine when it is safe to burn from an air quality perspective and where burning may cause health impacts. There may be additional burning restrictions put in place by local, state, or tribal authorities to prevent wildfires. Burners in all locations must also contact these local authorities before starting fires any time of year to provide notification of the burn and to obtain necessary local open burning permits. “DEQ regulates open burning because smoke can have serious health effects when ventilation conditions are poor,” said Rhonda Payne, a scientist from DEQ’s Air Permitting Program. “We try to give residents opportunities to burn without endangering public health.” Open burning is burning outside in the open air without a receptacle. In Montana, it usually means burning yard or field waste in the fall and spring. It usually does not include small recreational fires, flares, or construction site heaters. Until December 1, open burning is restricted to the time periods specified by DEQ. These times are available daily at www.burnclosures.mt.gov or by calling the 24-hour Ventilation Hotline at 800-225-6779. Both are updated by 5:00 p.m. each evening. The Burn Closures website also has information about what materials can and cannot be burned, frequently asked questions about open burning, major open burning permits, and local contact information.

Public Comment Meetings on 21% Electric Rate Increase The Montana Public Service Commission will holdtwo public comment meetings on September 24 and 25,2015, to provide the public an opportunity to commenton Montana-Dakota Utilities’ request for a 21% electricity rate increase for their approximately 26,000 electricity customers in eastern Montana. The meetings will be held in Sidney on September 24th at 5:30 in the USDA ARS Northern Plains Ag ResearchLab, 1500 N. Central Avenue; and in Miles City on September 25, 3 p.m. at Miles City Community College,2715 Dickinson Rm. 316.

for Alaska and the lodge has, at various times, received from his letters and he has kept up his dues and has never been suspended from membership of this lodge, so that on February 1st, 1920, Charles Mason has has been a mbmer of the lodge for twenty five years. "The Odd Fellows have a rule that when a member has been in good standing for twenty five years he is entitled to a Veteran's Jewl. Not many months after Charles Mason had been a member of the lodge for twenty five years, the lodge sent him the Veteran's Jewl. He now resides at Nome, Alaska. On the 7th of this month, Glasgow Lodge received a communication from Brother Charles Mason, and with it, two Lodge Gavels, made by the natives out of Alaska Seal Ivory. The one gavel bears the name and number of the lodge and the other has a carved cameo of a Polar Bear's head on one face of the gavel. These gavels were given to the lodge by Brother Charles Mason in appreciation of the fact of receiving the Veteran's Jewel from the lodge. The lodge is having carved on one face of the gavel the name of the donor, and the date of

his initiation into the lodge. This engraving is being done by Mr. Charles Bohner, Jeweler, and the gavels are on display in his show window at his place of business in the First National Bank Building." Byron Lindsay has no idea how long these gavels have been tucked away in the back of the desk drawer. And while he will be hauling the bulk of the I.O.O.F. odds & ends & memorabilia to

the Sovereign Grand Lodge in Great Falls, he chose to keep these gavels in Glasgow, presenting them to the Valley County Pioneer Museum. "I don't think they would be seen or appreciated in Great Falls," Byron said of these true works of art made out of seal ivory. "They belong in Glasgow." Wait until you see what the cleaners found next in an upcoming Buzz....
