The “We Scare Hunger” Student Council Committee collected 453 items for the Arnprior Food Bank with their

Playground Safety—Winter Advisory

Please note that students are not permitted to use playground equipment including swings during the winter months. The following winter conditions can make equipment that is otherwise in compliance with the CSA Standards for Playground Safety unsafe for use:

Freezing Temperatures - If the ground is frozen, play equipment is NOT safe for use.

Snow Build-up - Snow can cause two problems on a play structure. Firstly, it can make play surfaces very slippery. Secondly, it can create suffocation hazards if the openings at the end of tube slides or similar structures become closed in by drifting snow.

Ice or Freezing Rain - This can make play surfaces, hand grips, and stairways very slippery, increasing the risk of slip and fall injuries.

Winter Clothing - Synthetic materials such as nylon, reduce sliding resistance, particularly on plastic slides. This can increase the travel speed on playground equipment to a dangerous level, and, if combined with the frozen ground, can increase the chance of injury. Winter clothing is also bulky and more likely to have drawstrings or hooks and clips which can become entangled in components of the equipment.

It is under the recommendation of our insurance provider, OSBIE, that playground equipment cannot be operated safely under the winter conditions as described above.

After a read aloud and class discussion of the book “A Poppy is to Remember” by Heather Patterson and Ron Lightburn, Jorja Davidson wrote… A poppy is to remember

A poppy is for peace

A poppy stands for people who sacrificed themselves to give peace to others.

Following the reading of the book “Old Turtle”, the children discussed the points raised in the book about being thankful and grateful. Then they were asked to write about living with gratitude. Here is what Isaac Raudssus wrote…

I am thankful for happiness and joy that me and my friends share. I am thankful for my family that loves me and care. I am thankful for my teachers that give me my knowledge. I am thankful for the food and water that I get every day. But most of all, I am thankful for my life and everything in it. Yes, there are some bad things, but I try to make them good.

Classroom News

Veterans Week - Our school was fortunate to have LCdr Michael Wood visit our school on

Friday, November 8th. He spent the day visiting classes and sharing his experience in the

armed forces and answering questions. Classes visited included: Ms. Inglis-Herron (Grade 7),

Mrs. Staye (Grade 4/5), Mr. Somerville (Gr. 6), Mrs. Roberts (Gr. 2), Ms. DeJager (Grade 5 & 6),

Mrs. Blokland (Gr. 2/3), Mrs. Fransky (Gr. 1), Mrs. Sparling (SK/1) and Ms. Steele (Gr. 3/4).

Aboriginal Leader Skip Ross visited grades 5 to 8 students. Thanks to Mme Lecavalier for organizing this

event.

The MADD presentation was on November 14 for Grade 7 & 8 students. Thanks to our Student Council

President Taylor Gillan and VP Sydney Moore for making the introductions.

Author Rebecca Bender visited Mrs. Sparling’s SK/1 and Mrs. Fransky’s Grade 1 class, along with

Mrs. Callighen’s grade 3 and Mrs. Staye’s 4/5 classes on Tuesday, November 19th. She grew up in

Pembroke and now lives in Burlington and is an author/illustrator of “Giraffe and Bird” and “Don't Laugh at

Giraffe” (stories about friendship). She talked about how she became an author/illustrator then the

students came up with Characters and ideas for a story which she helped illustrate and guide them through

the process. Students have been preparing their own books that include these key elements to share with

each other at project time. Thanks to Ms. Bender who donated two of her books to our library.

Grade 8 students spent part of November 6th at Arnprior District High School spending time in classes and

familiarizing themselves with the school as part of “Take Your Grade 8 to High School Day”.

Our first Safe Schools assembly took place November 20th. Thanks to Mrs. Madore, Ms. Inglis and Mrs. Staye

and their students for providing skits/messages on our fall Bully themes. Each class had the opportunity to

share their class “Anti Bully Pledge”.

ADHS Musical Cabaret – Students from Mrs. Madore, Ms. Inglis-Herron, and Mrs. Morgan’s classes had the

opportunity to see this year’s ADHS Musical Cabaret on November 25th.

OYAP – Mr. Terry Hoelke visited WZ on November 26th to speak to our grade 8 students about the Ontario

Youth Apprenticeship Programs.

Kindergarten Registration The Renfrew County District School Board is pleased to welcome new JK and SK students to its schools for 2014-2015.

For Junior Kindergarten, children will be 4 years of age by December 31 of their current school year. For Senior

Kindergarten, children will be 5 years of age by December 31 of their current school year. Please note that students

presently in Junior Kindergarten are not required to re-register for Senior Kindergarten.

Registration will take place Monday, January 27-Friday, January 31 and Monday, February 3 to Friday, February 7th from

9:30 to 3 p.m. Please bring the following documents to register your child:

Proof of age (birth certificate/birth registration/baptism), Immunization records, Ontario Health Card,

Lot and Concession Number/Civic Street Address, Proof of Ontario residency (Ontario Driver’s License, utility bill)

Extended Day Program The Renfrew County District School Board and your school may be offering an extended day program for students from JK up

to age 12). Parents can select the before school program or after school program or both. The extended day program is

contingent on sufficient enrolment and is funded by revenue from parent fees. There will be some subsidies available for

families based on financial need.

The extended day program is expected to start at 7 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. on regular instructional days only (approximately up

to five hours per day). Please note the extended day program may not be offered on PA Days, weekends or board holidays (however this will depend on interest and agreements with third-party providers). Parents will be responsible for dropping off

and picking up their child from the program.

Parents wishing to show interest in the Extended Day Program can complete and return an Expression of Interest Survey

form available at the school office starting in January 2014.

Staff News:

This month our junior teachers (Ms. Steele, Mrs. Staye, Mr. Somerville, and Ms. DeJager), along with

Mr. Myers and Ms. Shoveller, spent a day at AJ Charbonneau working with Dr. Marian Small. They had

the opportunity to visit other junior classes and learn new teaching strategies for math.

Mme Steeves-Adam was invited to attend a French conference in Kingston sponsored by the EOSDN

(Eastern Ontario Staff Development Network). Mme Steeves-Adam was asked to present at a Board

French in-service day in early November.

Our teachers continue to work with our Student Success Teacher, Mrs. Margo Turpin, assessing

students with our math tool (PRIME) or PM Benchmarks (reading tool). They work together to plan and

ensure appropriate programming is in place for our students.

Mrs. Forrest and Ms. Shoveller worked with the Student Council on Halloween and then Christmas

activities including 2 food drives, door decorating contests and spirit days.

Thanks to Mme Robinson, Ms. Spratt and Ms. Shoveller for organizing the Remembrance Day

assemblies. Special thanks to student council members Mikayla Cardiff and Emily Parlee for their

wonderful emcee job! Thanks to Taylor Gillan and Sydney Moore for laying the wreath for our school at

the Cenotaph on Nov. 11th.

Thanks to Mrs. Staye for taking the grade 4s to swimming on Wednesdays.

Mme Lecavalier and Ms. Inglis-Herron offer “Opportunity Rooms” several days a week where students

have a place to go and finish work, catch up, or study during recess time.

Thanks to the following staff for hosting ADHS co-op students this term: Ms. Inglis-Herron,

Mrs. Dawson/Mrs. Iob, Mrs. Tarar/Mrs. Murch-D’Amours, Mrs. Sparling, and Mrs. Fransky.

Miss Mann attended a Music Conference in Southern Ontario last month.

Thanks to Mrs. Callighen for organizing the cookie campaign this year. Funds raised go towards paying

off the new Playground Structure in our Primary Yard.

Our School Support Counsellor, Liz Hildebrandt, took part in week long training on Applied Suicide

Intervention Skills. She will be a trainer for other School Support Counselors in the RCDSB.

Thanks to Ms. Inglis-Herron, Mr. Myers and Mr. Halpenny for volunteering to run Destination

Imagination at our school once a week at recess. Their purpose is to inspire and equip students to

become the next generation of innovators and leaders. The regional challenge takes place in Renfrew on

March 1.

Ms. Shoveller acts as a Mentor for newly appointed administrators within our County. She spent a day in

November working with her Mentees.

On October 28, Mr. Myers was the elementary principal representative for the RCDSB team at the Regional Session

for the Student Safety Initiative in Ottawa. The Ministry of Education engaged the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE) to "identify and collate a common set of provincial health and safety practices." This initiative

provides direction and resources for elementary science and technology in grades 7 and 8.

Thanks to the following teachers for volunteering their time to coach our Intermediate volleyball teams:

Mrs. Fransky, Mrs. Staye, Mrs. Blokland and Mr. Somerville.

Mrs. Cassidy-Rouleau successfully completed the Board’s Leadership Assessment Program in October.

Ms. Shoveller and Mrs. Cassidy-Rouleau attended the Special Education Conference, “Meeting The

Needs”, in October where they heard guest speakers and took part in workshops on various topics in the

field of special education.

We welcome Miss Amy Charbonneau to staff in our grade one class until February.
