Observances This Week
We pray for the men who were ordained as transitional deacons last weekend, including Craig Best, Jarred Kohn, Andrew Smith, Nicholas White and Jacob Willig, who our parish has been asked to support through our prayers during his years of formation at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary. We also pray for Deacons David Doseck, Peter Langenkamp and Alexander Witt who will be ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati on May20.
Today we honor all the teachers who have touched our lives and we support the men and women who have an impact on the lives of young people today. Why not reach out to one of your former teachers by card or email and tell them how much you appreciate their dedication?
Wednesday, May 10: St. Damien de Veuster, Priest
The man who would become St. Damien of Molokai was born in Belgium on Jan. 3, 1840. He wanted to follow his older brother and two sisters who took religious vows. He entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He took the name Damien, after a sixth century martyr. In 1864, Damien's brother, who was also in the same order, was ordered to Hawaii, but he became ill, so Damien offered to go in his place.
Brother Damien arrived in Hawaii in March, 1864, and was ordained two months later. In 1866 Hawaii established a leper colony on the island of Molokai on the Kalapaupapa Peninsula and required forced quarantine of leprosy patients. In 1873, Fr. Damien made the trip to be with the people in their colony. The leper colony was to become his permanent home. Fr. Damien grew attached to the people and his work. He asked permission to stay at the colony to serve. His request was granted. Father Damien contracted leprosy in 1865. He derived the strength to continue his ministry from prayer and devotion. He often went to the cemetery to pray the Rosary or spent time in the presence of the Eucharist. "It is at the foot of the altar that we find the strength we need in our isolation," he wrote. After 16 years in the colony, Fr. Damien succumbed to leprosy on April 15, 1889. The day of his passing is a statewide holiday in Hawaii.

May Crowning May 13 -14, 2017

Next weekend we will have May Crowning at every Mass. We invite all mothers and daughters to participate in the opening Processional. If you would like to donate cut flowers to offer to the Blessed Mother it would be
appreciated.
Gabriella Zuccarello, a new parishioner, who just happens to be from Italy, has
graciously offered to teach Italian lessons to our parishioners while she is on summer
hiatus from her teaching duties at Xavier University. Gabriella hopes to have a small
class—8 students at most—who will meet once each week for one hour beginning in June. If you are interested in learning to
speak Italian and learn more about Italian culture, please call the parish office.

On May 13, 1917, three shepherd children named Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco saw a vision of Our Lady of Fatima who was dressed in white and holding a rosary. These apparitions lasted through October of the same year and brought messages of prayer, repentance, and
reparation.
The apparitions were declared of “supernatural character” by the Catholic Church in 1930,
and a shrine was erected near the original apparition site in Fatima. Since then, thousands of pilgrims have made their prayerful journeys to Fatima, including three popes: Pope Paul VI,
Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI.
During Pope Francis’ upcoming anniversary pilgrimage to Fatima, he will canonize two of the
Fatima visionaries, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, on May 13.

Holy Cross-Immaculata Parish is pleased to sponsor this special event!
“Music & Meditations” is a fundraising recital for our beloved cantor and outstanding ten-
or who will be moving to Meiningen, Germany, for a chorus position at the Meiningen
Court Theatre. In this recital, Pedro will be singing music inspired from the Bible (Dvorak’s
Biblical Songs), major sacred and oratorio arias (including arias from Verdi’s Requiem and
Rosini’s Stabat Mater), and a group of arias from operas and musicals that include a prayer
in them.
Please join Pedro Arroyo and pianist Christopher L. Koon for an evening of gorgeous music
inspired in meditations and prayers. Parishioners who regularly attend the Saturday Mass
are familiar with Pedro’s incredible gift of voice. There have been many times when the
congregation has had tears in their eyes—but smiles on their faces because Pedro has
touched their hearts and souls with his incredible voice. Others may have heard Pedro for
the first time at the Good Friday afternoon service. Someday Pedro will perform at many
of the well-known opera houses throughout the world. We have been blessed to have
him at our parish for the past few years. We invite you to attend a night of music that you
will long remember! Admission is free, but donations to assist Pedro with travel and other
expenses will be greatly appreciated.
