Power line communication (PLC), also known as power line carrier, mains communication, power line telecom (PLT), or power line networking (PLN), is a system for carrying data on a conductor also used for electric power transmission.
Electrical power is transmitted over high voltage transmission lines, distributed over medium voltage, and used inside buildings at lower voltages. PLC can be applied at each stage.
All PLC systems operate by impressing a modulated carrier signal on the wiring system. Different types of PLC use different frequency bands, depending on the signal transmission characteristics of the power wiring used. Since the power wiring system was originally intended for transmission of AC power, the power wire circuits have only a limited ability to carry higher frequencies. Higher data rates generally imply shorter ranges (Trade-off).
PLC Background
Better managing the energy capacity we have today is the most economical, available, and immediate form of alternative fuel. Smart device networks that save energy transparently (i.e. without affecting our daily lives) are the best way to manage and control energy use.
Echelon Corp. Sunnyvale, CA (Nasdaq:ELON) off-the-shelf LonWorks®
technology for control networking offers the only ‘no new wires’approach to networks, with high reliability, flexible deployment, and cost-free installation. Power line smart transceivers combine the applications and communications processing of a Neuron core with power line signaling in a single, low-cost chip.
Echelon's Networked Energy Services (NES) system enables open, bidirectional, and extensible/scaleable infrastructure, a comprehensive range of utility applications, going far beyond traditional AMR systems, with limited meter-reading functionality over proprietary, often one-way communication modules retrofitted to conventional electricity meters.
Echelon LonWorks ® based technology
Echelon Corp. CA (Nasdaq:ELON) in July 2000 announced American National Standards Institute (ANSI) open standard as the ANSI/EIA 709.2-A-2000 Control Network Powerline (PL) Channel Specification.
Designed to send information between everyday devices like appliances, electric meters, water heaters, security systems, and lighting systems through a home or building's AC power wiring, this technology employs advanced digital signal processing and error correction techniques to ensure reliable signaling.
Echelon's PLT-22 power line transceiver has been field proven worldwide on a large scale in appliance, meter reading, home automation, lighting, and energy control applications. (e.g. 22-million homes with AMR in Italy (Enel). Based on mature, robust, reliable technology, with built-in security & messaging services.
