Why is COVID-19 testing so complex?

For more information about testing, visitblog.ohiohealth.com/series/covid-19-coronavirus-toolkit/
Testing Q&AQ: What are the different types of tests? A: There are two types of tests for COVID, a viral test that tells you if you have a current infection and an antibody test that potentially tells you if you have had the virus.
Q: Why aren’t they testing everyone?A: There are currently not enough tests to test everyone. Testing for the virus is done based on a tiered approach for symptomatic people depending on risk factors and also whether you are having a surgical procedure.
Q: Why can’t I just walk into an Urgent Care for a test?A: COVID tests must be ordered by your family doctor or the Ohio Department of Health.
Q: I hear about retailers offering drive through testing. Is this effective?A: It depends on the type of test they are using. The best course of action if you are symptomatic is to call your primary care provider or the ODH to discuss best next steps.

Return to Work ManagementQ: Does OhioHealth provide return to work physicals or testing after someone has had COVID?A: They do not because return to work is based on specific CDC guidelines and do not require a provider sign off.
Q: What if someone was quarantined due to suspicion, what’s the process to ensure they are safe to return to work?A: It is based on CDC guidelines. It is safe to return to work if there is no fever for 72 hours, the symptoms are gone or greatly reduced AND it has been at least 10 days from the start of symptoms.
Q: What can employers do to ensure employees return back to work without symptoms? A: It is recommend there be a daily screening of employees before they enter work. This can include self-checks for symptoms and potentially temperature checking at the door. If the employee was diagnosed with COVID or COVID symptomatic then the CDC return to work guidelines apply (see slide 6).
