Pastor’s Perspective It is New Year’s Day as I pen these words. The ball at Times Square has dropped.
2017 is now history. The year’s first deadline for this Pastor’s Perspective is here. Some things stay the same from year to year. But I know one thing for certain. 2018 will bring changes. For all of us. Changes we are anticipating. And changes we don’t see coming. Changes we can effect. And changes over which we have no control.
December 31st is Gaye’s birthday. Two of our children and their families were still with us. Their vehicles were loaded for the drive home. The grandkids were all snuggled in bed. As midnight approached, we gathered in the kitchen for a toast to the New Year with our traditional sparkling apple cider. We talked briefly of the changes coming in 2018 for our family. Our daughter is due with her second child in May. One of our sons will finish his command at Fort Jackson in April and will get a new assignment from the Army. Our other son will leave the Army this summer after eight years on active duty. What he does next is still TBD. Either way, it will be a huge transition for him and his family. 2018 will be a year of change for our family. And these are only the changes we know about.
Every year, we experience changes we didn’t anticipate. All of us were saddened by the tragic fire on Christmas Eve at the home of Pastor Ed Beddingfield that took the life of his wife, Sarah. Others lose loved ones unexpectedly. Our health or the health of family members and friends can take a sudden turn for the worst. Acci-dents happen. We are constantly reminded how quickly life can change. For any of us. I am thankful we have a loving God who is sovereign. Regardless of what hap-pens in our lives on this earth, our future is secure with Him.
But it is the change we can effect that is on my mind today. I want 2018 to count for eternity. And I want to do my part. I will be teaching a 4-week class on how to share your faith on Wednesday evenings in January (starting on the 10th). I strongly encourage you to take part. Our 2020 Vision committee will be hard at work these next few months fleshing out the “Better Intermediate Future” for our church. I encourage you to be in prayer for them and provide your input. 2018 has great po-tential for God’s kingdom. Our God – who never changes – wants to change us for His glory. I’m all in!
See you Sunday! ~ John
