It wasn’t until my first theology class after college that I learned about biblical covenants. At that point I had been reading the Bible for about five years, so there were some things I did know about it. I knew the Bible had 66 books that were the inspired Word of God; I knew they were written for teaching, correction, and training (2 Timothy 3:16), but I hadn’t grasped the idea of the Bible being one cohesive storyline, one book telling one story.

This covenants class began to teach me about the thread running throughout every Old and New Testament book. From the first page to the last, the entire Bible tells one grand story, a story centered on Jesus. It’s a story of God’s unchanging glory and faithfulness to His people (who themselves are frequently unfaithful and self-focused). And when the time came for the long-awaited Messiah to arrive on earth, Jesus became the fulfillment of this grand story.

Growing in knowledge of the overarching story of Scripture and its promises changed my adoration for God and His Word forever. I hope everyone has the opportunity to dive into a study like this that looks at the Bible as one big picture and discover the riches of Christ made available to all as a completely free gift.

Needless to say, I’m glad you’ve picked this study up! As we dive into this glorious story together, we will explore some legendary promises of God and the journeys of His people throughout the Bible’s history. I’m confident that God will reveal truth, stir our hearts, and give us a fresh perspective on the meaning of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection. Whether you’re running from God or working your tail off to please Him, unpacking the story of Scripture will challenge your view of God.

Imagine what God can do as you reflect on Him this semester. As you open His Word, search for Jesus. In the lives of Abraham, Moses, and David, you will see faithful forerunners for Christ, the True and Faithful, the Chosen One. And when you get to the part with Jesus at the Cross, be still there, and consider God’s love for you, for the whole world. See Christ, and you’ll see God’s heart for you.

Let’s jump in,

11. Whole Hearted Devotion of The Leader. Whole Hearted Devotion of The LeaderThe best preparation for leading a bible study is maintaining your personal walk with the Lord. Keep these things in mind:

• Spend time with God daily. Your relationship with God needs to be fresh and growing! You want your leadership to be an overflow from your relationship with God.

• Spend time in the passage throughout the week.• Pray with your co-leader for each woman in your group and for your chapter.• Prepare ahead of time and discuss with your co-leader. Make a plan (see example).• Your job is not to be “everything” to them or to know “everything.” God just asks you to

trust Him and be faithful with the opportunity you have.• Lead and walk by faith. Often we grow the most when we step out in faith.

22. Thoughts for an Engaged Small Group. Thoughts for an Engaged Small Group• Have a snack each week if possible, alternating healthy and “less healthy.” Maybe have

popcorn one week and a bag of candy the next. Everyone likes a snack, it helps create a welcoming environment!

• Set a regular meeting place and time. Consistency helps avoid obstacles that will keep people from being there and a plan creates an environment where people know what to expect.

• Regularly break up into smaller groups of 2-3, starting from the very first meeting. Smaller groups help people feel known. Keep the groups no bigger than 3. This will pay off in the long run.

• Have half of the time be in the Bible study passage, going over it and applying it. The other half should be like a “community group” (getting to know one another and for prayer). So if the Bible study starts at 7, then start the Bible study part at 7:45, ending at 8:30.

• Try reaching out to different women each week- grab lunch or coffee with one woman a week outside of group time.

Page 9: “Blessed is the the Lord.”...Out of God’s great love, He created a world that was good. He made people to enjoy a deeply He made people to enjoy a deeply connected relationship

l e a d e r r e s o u r c e s 9

Let’s say the group is starting at 7pm. Talk and snack until 7:15. Start the group about 15 minutes after the “start” time.

At 7:15 start off by building community among the group through small group discussion and prayer. You could get into groups of 2-3 (but no more than 3) with a question to discuss for getting to know one another and for prayer. Sometimes the question could be for fun and other times more serious. For example: “What was a highlight and lowlight of your week?” or “How did you apply last week’s lesson?”

Pray in the small groups. (Prayer at the beginning is a good way to help make it an emphasis.) Suggest something for them to pray for as a group- that is bigger than themselves and the group. Some ideas: For the chapter and girls who do not know Jesus; family members, friends, and classmates who they would like to point to Jesus; a missionary; a country/people group in need of the gospel.

Gather back as one group and have one person pray for the time. Read and hear aloud the passage together. Discuss the passage using the questions provided as a guide. Create a plan of action.

Connect in small groups (of 2-3) again. Discuss your plan of action and pray for one another.

T H E G O S P E LThe good news of how we can be reconciled to God through Jesus.

G O D ’ S D E S I G NOut of God’s great love, He created a world that was good. He made people to enjoy a deeply connected relationship with Him and to represent Him through our lives. (Genesis 1:26-28, 31) As a loving Father, He communicated boundaries to protect us and to allow us to fully enjoy our relationships with Him and with other people (Genesis 2:15-16).

B R O K E N N E S SYet, when we look around our world, brokenness and evil are evident everywhere - war, famine, disease, corruption. If we are honest, we also see brokenness and evil inside ourselves - deceit, hatred, greed, lust.

This is because we have rejected God’s design and chosen to follow our own way.

Our rejection of God and His ways is what the Bible calls sin. (Romans 3:23)

Our sin results in separation from God which the Bible calls death. (Romans 6:23a) Unless our sin is forgiven, we will remain separated from God forever.

J E S U SGod does not want to leave us in our sin and brokenness!

God graciously provided a way to forgive our sin and to freely give us eternal life - a life connected to God both now and forever. (Romans 6:23b; John 17:3)

God’s only Son, Jesus, died in our place. He took upon Himself the penalty that we deserve because of our sin. Then, Jesus rose from the dead, and forever defeated the power of sin and death. (Romans 5:8, 1 Corinthians 15:3-5)

B E L I E V EWe respond to Jesus by believing in Him for the forgiveness of our sin.

To believe in Jesus means that you no longer try to earn God’s approval through what you do, nor do you deny that you need forgiveness and rescue. Instead, you accept God’s free gift of eternal life. Belief or faith is simply being convinced or persuaded that something or someone is trustworthy (John 1:12; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Everyone who believes in Jesus is forgiven of their sin and receives eternal life. We can now know God personally and experience the life we were designed to live (John 3:16-17).

The entire Bible tells one grand story, a story centered on Jesus. In this study, we’ll explore the story of Scripture in nine words: Creation, Revolt, Promise, Law, King, Hope, Jesus, Church, Shalom.

What is meta-narrative?

Why is it important to know the story of the whole Bible?

What is the Bible about?

Read Genesis 1:1-5.

What does God do in these verses?

What existed before God created the universe?

Read John 1:1-4.

What are the similarities between these two passages? Who was there in the beginning?

Page 15: “Blessed is the the Lord.”...Out of God’s great love, He created a world that was good. He made people to enjoy a deeply He made people to enjoy a deeply connected relationship

o n e : c r e a t i o n 1 5

What do we learn about God from these verses?

Read Genesis 1:26-31, Psalm 8:4-5, and John 1:12.

What task does God give man in Gen. 1:26 and again in v28? What does that mean?

How is man described in these verses throughout the Bible? What does that mean?

R E F L E C T

What does God say about his creation?

Is God’s creation full of beauty or functionality? Both? How does this reveal what God is like?

Think about current pop culture: movies, TV shows, and internet culture. How does our current 21st century American culture answer the questions, “Why do we exist?” and “What is the meaning of life?” How does this compare to the biblical answer we just discovered?

Read Genesis 6:5.

Since the Fall in Genesis 3, things have only gotten worse; the world is in a terrible state. Who marks the beginning of hope for better days for the people of Israel?

Read Genesis 11:27-12:3.

What do we learn about Abraham?

Home Country: Married to: Number of kids:

Was Abraham worthy to be the chosen recipient of God’s promises? Why or why not?

What does that say about who God chooses?

Page 23: “Blessed is the the Lord.”...Out of God’s great love, He created a world that was good. He made people to enjoy a deeply He made people to enjoy a deeply connected relationship

t h r e e : p r o m i s e 2 3

What are the three specific promises God made to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3? What does each mean?

1. Land - 2. Seed - 3. Blessing -

This makes up the Abrahamic Covenant, one of four covenants in the Bible.

What does it mean that all the nations would be blessed through Abraham? (Matthew 1:1-17)

Read Genesis 15:5-6.

What did God promise Abraham in v5?

What do you learn about Abraham in v6?

Why was Abraham “counted” as righteous? How was someone saved in Old Testament times?

What about you? How are you counted as righteous? Read Romans 4:1-5 and Hebrews 6:13-20.

So Abraham is saved, but he still has two problems: still has no child and still is not reflecting God’s character. God steps in supernaturally again and again to rescue when Abraham gives in to fear (Gen. 12; 20). Then God provides solutions for both of Abraham’s problems.

Read Genesis 21:1-7 and 22:1-18.

What did God ask Abraham to do?

Given what God has promised, why would this have been so hard?

If God loves Abraham and Isaac, why did God command Abraham to do this?

What does this story remind you of?

If salvation is by faith alone, why does your obedience after salvation matter?

Abraham’s success as a follower of God was directly proportional to his willingness to trust God when life got hard. When do you struggle to trust God? What circumstances make it harder to trust Him? What circumstances or choices make it easier for you to trust God?

What can you do to remain rooted and firm in faith when life’s tough storms hit you? What about when you are asked to let go of or step into something that seems impossible?

Lots of godly churches and people disagree about the details of our future. Here is what Grace Bible Church believes.

Church Age: Church Age: Where we are today!

Rapture:Rapture: Unknown day/time. All the Church age believers, both living and who have died, are raised and drawn up to Jesus in heaven. We are given our resurrection bodies; maybe/probably when we will be at the Judgement Seat of Christ.

Great Tribulation: Great Tribulation: Really bad time on earth; Antichrist rises and brings persecution on Israel so they again become desperate and cry out for a Savior. Finally the Jewish people embrace Jesus as their King, and the moment they do He comes back.

Return of Jesus: Return of Jesus: The anticlimactic battle of Jesus and Antichrist (Rev. 19:11-21) where Jesus will destroy all evil in one word. He then sets up his Millennial Kingdom on earth.

Millennial Kingdom: Millennial Kingdom: Jesus’s 1000 year rule on earth; he will reign from Jerusalem. When all the Old Testament promises to the nation of Israel are fulfilled. A time of unparalleled prosperity and blessing on earth. Ends with Satan being released and deceiving the people of Israel once again. God the Father shows up and the battle is just as anticlimactic as before. All enemies are wiped out (Great White Throne) and the universe disintegrates.

New heavens & new earth: New heavens & new earth: God recreates a New heaven and New earth that we get to enjoy forever.

Again, you can disagree on details, just remember 1) Jesus will return. 2) Jesus will win. 3) Jesus will judge all based on works (two judgements). 4) Jesus will fix all that is broken.

Now, knowing the whole story of Scripture, what does this study tell us about God’s character?

Over the past several weeks, we’ve learned about nine words that summarize the grand story of the Bible. Since

we want to be people who are marked by transformation and not just information, let’s take time to draw our

study to a useful conclusion with a process known as synthesis.

Our goal is to create an overall summary of the whole Bible that we can quickly review any time in the future to

remind us of the flow and content.

What is the Bible about?

Why is it important to know the story of the whole Bible?

What are the nine story of Scripture keywords that you’ve learned? Summarize them!

Break into small groups of 2-3 and let each person choose & answer one of these questions:

Which one of the nine words did you enjoy learning about most? Why?

Which one of the nine words will you continue to dwell on and explore further? Why?

What’s something you learned or experienced this semester that you want to remember forever?

Break into small groups of 2-3 and let each person choose & answer one of these questions:

How have you grown as a person and with God since you first started coming?

In what ways has God revealed Himself to you during this time?

How will you take what you’ve learned and continue to let it grow/change you?

How has this study impacted your perspective on Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection?

Why continue seeking God? What’s your plan? How will you feed your relationship with God, now and over the

summer?

We desire for every Greek student at Texas A&M to have the opportunity to hear the Gospel and respond to knowing Jesus. As Legacy leaders are sent into their chapter to make Christ known and see lives changed, they are trained in spiritual multiplication, biblical understanding, and the Spirit-filled life.

Legacy: Greek Ministries, a partner ministry of Grace Bible Church, exists to build generations of Christ-centered laborers who make and multiply disciples in their chapter, Greek community, campus, and around the world. Our prayer is that we would help each student leave a legacy of disciple-makers in their chapter while also taking with them the skills and desire to continue making disciples as a lifestyle wherever God leads them.
