Our attention has beeq frequently calledduring tfqe past year to tfqe claims rrjadeby the progenitors of Aqtikamnia, and asa result after careful investigation we sub-net tlqe following as a compendium ofour exanqiqation of its pathological andphysiological actiorp

The therapeutic properties are, Antipyretic,Antithermic, Analgesic and Anodyne. Klem-erer of Germany, makes a distinction betweenantipyretics and antithermics. He says, “Anti-thermics act only on the temperature; that is,they influence its reduction, while antipyreticsinfluence the cause of the high temperature.

Fever is an acute derangement of all func-tions, the most importantof which are acceler-ation of the heart’s beat, and disturbance ofthe circulation; nervous disturbance; elevationof the bodily temperature; disturbance ofnutrition, including secretion.

These four groups of symptoms may haveone or two relations. One condition may bethe cause of the other, or they may all besimply the result of a common cause. Thenervous disturbances of fever may be summedup as a paresis or convulsions, stupor, comaor delirium.

Jergenson has found that there is a regulardiurnal variation of temperature in health,precisely similar to that which is known tooccur in fever thus, the 24 hours is, as far ashuman temperature is concerned, divided intoa diurnal and nocturnal period.

Burdon Sanderson says : “The only mate-rial difference between the conditions is thatin fever the normal is 3°.267°F. higher.”

In health, there is in man a fixed mean anda normal temperature, having a regularrhythm, and this variation is beyond the con-trol of all disturbing causes, which do notforce the organism beyond the condition ofhealth. The maintenance of the normal tem-perature and its rhythm is dependent upon thenervous system, which within certain limitscontrols both the production and dissipationof animal heat.

So far as our present knowledge goes, thechief factor in controlling heat dissipation, isthe vaso-motor nerves, including in man suchnerves as control sweat secretions ; these nerves

The only nervecentre proven to exist capable of influencingthe heat production without affecting thegeneral circulation, is situated in the ponsvarolii or above it, and whilst it may be amuscular vaso-motor centre, it is more proba-bly an “inhibitory heat center.” Of whichever nature it maybe, it must act through sub-ordinate centres situated in the spinal cord.

In fever, vaso-motor paralysis, when pro-duced, is followed by an immediate fall oftemperature. Fever is, therefore, a state inwhich the depressing poison or a depressingperipheral irritation, acts upon the nervoussystem which regulates the production anddissipation of animal heat. Owing to its de-pressed state, the inhibition centre does notexert its normal influence upon the system,and consequently tissue change goes on at arate which results in the production of moreheat than normal, and an abnormal destructionand elimination of the materials of the tissue.At the same time the vaso-motor and otherheat dissipating centers are so benumbed thatthey are not called into action by their normalstimulus—elevation of the general bodily tern-

perature, and do not provide for throwing offthe animal heat until it becomes so excessiveas to call into action, by its excessive stimula-tion, even their depressed forces. The nervecenters, in some cases, seem to be completelyinhibited. Antikamnia removes the pressure,by dilating the capillaries and the other vas-cular vessels, thus causing local congestion todisappear. It reduces the pulse rate, therebyslowing the heart. It controls the vaso-motornerves, besides calming the whole nervous sys-tem, and thus has a general soothing effect. It isa valuableremedy as an antithermic; its actionin this regard is well marked, sometimes re-ducing the temperature 2° to 3° F. in a fewhours. It seems to have a better effect on thehigh evening temperature than upon the highdiurnal temperature. An extreme degree offever, with or without complications, is dan-gerous, and must be controlled ; in additionto the direct substraction of heat by cold ap-plications, we must, with caution, have recourseto antipyretic remedies. A distinction mustbe drawn between fever and its pathogenicagent. Such an antipyretic as Antikamniamay not act on this agent, butmay have an inde-pendent action, therefore, haveonly a transitoryeffect, or it may influence this agent in thesame manner that quinine does the germ ofmalaria or influenza.

fevers and all gastroenteric fevers by theadministration of Antikamnia in moderatedoses, is that the alimentary canal is renderedalkaline, and kept in an antiseptic condition,and this is a most important condition tomaintain in the treatment of all fevers.

The best results are obtained with Antikam-nia when exhibited in small doses, repeated atproper intervals, and the most desirable vehi-cle is sherry wine or dilutedbrandy.

The duration of the effect of Antikamnia islonger than that produced by any of the othercoal tar derivatives. It also seems indisposedto produce sub-normal temperature, as some ofthe others do.

In the pyrexia produced by exposure to therays of the sun, which is common in India andin our large cities during the summer solstice,Antikamnia, in addition to cold douches, is thebest remedy. Antikamnia reduces tempera-ture by increasing radiation of heat from thebody, and diminishing heat production. Itstimulates the glandular system, particularlythe sudorific glands. In many cases its actionas a diaphoretic is phenomenal.

In some cases it has marked action on themammary glands, producing an increase in theflow of milk. Antikamnia can be given tochildren without any ill effects, and is a relia-

6ble remedy. In pertussis, it keeps the parox-ysms in check, and makes the patient morecomfortable than any remedy we have. Thecyanosis induced by its administration is nil,unless there is a peculiar idiosyncrasy, whichis found sometimes, producing manifest heartdisturbance. These are to be overcome bystimuli, or intravenous injections of salt.Antikamnia acts admirably in the after-painsof labor, in dysmenorrhoea, hemicrania, mi-graine, ordinary sick or nervous headache, inthe pains of locomotor ataxia, the variousneuralgias, epilepsy, and in the aching painsproduced by la grippe and dengue. It exerts adecided beneficial influence in bronchial andpneumonic troubles, as well as the fever ofphthisis.

It acts as an analgesic by obtunding thesensibilities of the vaso-motor and sensorynerves. It seems to tranquilize the ganglioniccenters of the whole nervous system, and hasbut slight action on the brain. We mean bythis, that it does not stupify or produce uncon-sciousness. It seems to have no disturbinginfluence on the lt has a happy effectin nearly all neurotic troubles, and is destinedto occupy a permanent position in therapeutics.

Antikamnia is of the Amido-Benzole series,in combination, and is much to be preferred toany other of this class of derivatives.

October sth, 1891.Gentlemen:—The relief of suffering is the

object of philanthropy. The relief of paincommands the highest efforts of the physician.Remedies which are useful in the relief of painare always highly prized, and the discoverer isentitled to the highest honor. For many yearsnumberless remedies have been offered to theprofession as analgesics and anodynes ; thelist is a long one, and contains many productsof great reliability—the result of faithfulstudy and experiment. One especially, has re-ceived the confidence of the profession, theAntipyrin of Knorr ; but recently there hasappeared a product which bids fair to be asuccessful rival of this, and all others, and intruth to deserve the title “A Succedaneum forMorphia.”

Antikamnia is no longer a stranger to themedical profession, but is daily winning laurelsin its mission as ‘‘opposed to pain,” It is de-scribed as a new combinationof coal tar deriv-atives, of the series Cn H 2n_ 6 into which theamines have entered, forming the variousamido compounds. It is by the further com-bination of other organic bodies with the amidobenzoles that many of the valuableantipyreticsand analgesics have been brought into exist-ence. Antikamnia has as its base the derivatives of the amido benzoles, so combined as toobviate the bad effects caused by many of thisseries of organic bodies when administeredalone.

Briefly stated, it is indicated in Cephalalgia,Neuralgia, attacks of Acute Rheumatism, Scia-tica, and the disorders of menstruation, accom-panied by pain. In the treatment of Malaria,Typhoid and other fevers, it is fast winning itsway. In the treatment of diseases where it isimportant to exhibit quinine, the action ofAntikamnia will bo found specially desirablein preventing the disturbance of the nervoussystem so frequent when quinine is given inlarge quantities.

Several very interesting articles have ap-peared of late, describing its action. Hr. Hol-land, in the Medical Summary of May, des-cribes an interesting case of Dysmenorrhoea

promptly relieved by its use. My own exper-ience confirms this, I believe it to be one ofHie best remedies for the relief of pain in thisdisease. Experience with its use in cases ofla Grippe, Asthma, etc., has convinced me ofits efficacy. Indeed, to state the merits ofAntikamnia more fully, it would be necessaryto mention all the diseases in which pain is aprominent symptom. It can be used advan-tageously in the treatment of the various formsof hysteria where bromides have been indi-cated heretofore.

So far as my experience goes, we need notanticipate unfavorable after effects; its actionis soothing, tranquilizing, and diminishes thetendency of a rise of the bodily temperature.Antikamnia has been found by Dr. Alyord, ofthe St. Louis City Hospital, especially valuablein the treatment of Phthisis.

Dr. Gayle, of Kansas City, Mo., reportsvery satisfactory results from its use in thetreatment of Typhoid, in an article publishedin the St. Louis Courier of Medicine, August,1890.

A very successful operation, performed byDr. A. Y. L. Brokaw, Demonstrator of Anat-omy and Surgery, Missouri Medical College,in a case of a severe stab wound of thorax andabdomen, published in the same journal ofDecember, 1890, shows how valuable is Anti-

kamnia as a remedy for the relief of pain. Itis best exhibited in doses of from three to tengrains every three or four hours, in powder ortablet form, taken in water or wine.

Its anodyne action is admirably shown inthe treatment of the insomnia of neurasthenicpatients, and for the treatment of many casesof sleeplessness in over-worked business andprofessional men. I am,

Among the many truly marvelous membersof the coal tar chemical derivatives whichhave displayed such power over two of themost dreadful features of disease, viz.—feverand pain, none seems to promise wider andmore permanent usefulness than the Americanproduct, Antikamnia. This name might benot incorrectly translated pain-killer. Thesubstance is in the form of a white powder,somewhat like quinine in appearance, butlacking disagreeable taste. It is soluble inhot water and in alcohol. A good vehicle forit is simple elixir, or it may be administeredin capsules, pills or tablets. It does not affectthe secretions, nor depress the action of theheart, but reduces temperature in fever, andsecondarily slows thepulse. Itdoes not impededigestion, nor produce unpleasant after-effects.It appears to be safer and equally as efficientas any of the members of this wonderful series.The purpose I have in referring to it, is to callthe attentionof the profession to the value ofthis new remedy as a substitute for opium andmorphine, hyosciamine and other dangerousalkaloids. The dreadful effects of abuse ofthese formidable drugs are not apparent in fullforce even to the medical mind, which has

not been especially directed to their remote,no less than their immediate consequences.Hereditary results of the morphine habit, forexample, may be worse and more terrible tocontemplate than the individual effects. It hashappened to the writer during his professionallife, to have been called to take part in thestudy and discussion of many difficult andimportant points in medico-legal practice, andhis mind has been directed to the study of thehereditary antecedents in which the lines ofevolution ultimate, which lead up to criminalcareers, and those sudden and violent outburstsof desperate crime which astound and appallcommunities. He has found the alcoholic andthe morphine habitplaying always a conspicuouspart in the hereditary influences which lay thegroundwork of these catastrophes of insanity,and of a whole host of evils which affect ourdefective classes, and darken and destroy somany lives. We are accustomed to regard itas a strange dispensation of Providence whichvisits the sins of fathers upon children of thethird and fourth generation. But when one ofthese heredities of these vicious bodily sins isonce established, happily it can not extendbeyond the third and fourth generation. Themerciful solution of the problem set for natureis annihilation. God is both merciful and just.Let the victimsof thesebodilysins andevil habitsreflect upon their tremendous responsibilitytowards posterity. The professional experienceis, that in Antikamnia we have found the bestsubstitute for morphia, chloral, cocaine and thelike, for the relief of pain and procurement ofrest in all ordinary cases.—3l. Quinine is the best germ destroyer we havefor the microbe of influenza. During the re-cent epidemic I aborted quite a number ofcases with Antikamnia in combination withsalol and quinine. The relief obtained by theadministration of Antikamnia where the ceph-alalgia wr as severe, as in the majority of mycases, was wonderful. When the pain seemedintolerable, I have seen a ten grain dose ofAntikamnia banish it. The combination spokenof was as follows :
