• imperialism = highest stage of capitalism– cap creates rich/poor classes– imp is a product of cap (think of the econ motive)

and creates rich/poor nations

• Exploitation and dehumanization of natives (ex. Congo)– pillaging of wealth– taking away rights– killing natives– killing the souls of the natives– forced labor

American Anti-Imperialist League

• Imp = despotism; it denies people of liberty, and all people are entitled to fundamental rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness)

• Imp defies the spirit of America (USA fought for its independence … why should it take over others?)

• There will be native opposition to colonial rule = difficult to govern
