Qualificationsi am a soon to be graduate of the Pennsylvania state university with a background in architecture, construction management, and real estate development. through my professional work experience i have completed 2,000 iDP hours and developed an advanced proficiency in developing construction documents and details. My goal is to obtain my architectural license within the next three years.

My professional experience has allowed me to work on a variety of projects with differing scopes, scales, budgets, and deadlines. i am capable of working on multiple projects at the same time and ensuring that all deadlines are met. the majority of projects have been retail build-outs for national merchandisers, but i am looking to expand my knowledge and gain experience in different fields of architecture.

My time at tricarico architecture exposed me to working on various aspects of the design process for a variety of commercial projects with different scales and scopes throughout the united states. i have been part of surveying teams and have gone to the site in order to document the existing conditions. During one summer i developed a new survey book format that is still used today.

i was also heavily involved in producing construction documents. at the beginning of my work experience i typically would work on correcting redlines and distributing final documents. However, in my more recent time i would began producing construction documents from the beginning and also crosscheck others work against a prototypical set.

this project required extensive investigation and detailing of both the existing storefront, during the survey period, and the proposed storefront during the construction document phase. Precision was key in regards to correctly dimensioning and noting the location of existing fi nishes which were to remain and which were to be removed. i worked closely with the client and tenant coordinator for the space in order to ensure both parties were pleased with the end result.

the opportunity to work for brixmor Property group provided me with invaluable knowledge on site planning and real estate development. i was brought in to assist with the production of presentation drawings for the icsc national conference held at the end of May 2013. however, i was called on again to assist in drawing production in December of the same year for the northeast Regional icsc convention.

Retail Rehab

by studying trends in retail architecture and design over the past few years the aims of this project were to provide a transformable and transportable micro-store that could be used to reinhabit defunct commercial sites. however, this micro-box could also be used as an information kiosk, pop-up store, or grouped together at a special event to create a small retail area. the box itself is designed to fi t on the back of a standard trailer and can easily be collapsed and transported to any site that would request its service. the branding consists of a panel that will slide in and out of the cap of the box in order to advertise to consumers that the store is open for business. for entities that require more space than that of just one box, the stores can be grouped together in diff erent confi gurations to accommodate their needs. this project aims to predict the change in physical retailing due to the forces of e-commerce and the showrooming of physical brick-and-mortar stores.

BETA RETAIL POD

Brand Display PanelThe brand display panel is designed to be easily removed from the retail pod in order to provide an easy switch between various shops. The 7’-6” x 7’-0” panel provides clear signage on all four sides of the pod for maximum brand exposure for the product being sold.

When the pod is open for business the brand panel is raised to a top elevation of 16’-0” providing clear sight lines from multlple viewpoints.

Aluminum Pod EnclosureThe aluminum enclosure provides lightweight covering for the pod that can easily be lifted by the hyrdaulic system in place. When the pod is closed the enclosure can be locked to the steel framed structure to provide security against theft of the merchandise.

Steel FrameThe aluminum enclosure provides a lightweight covering for the pod that can easily be lifted by the hyrdaulic system in place. When the pod is closed the enclosure can be locked to the steel framed structure to provide security against theft of the merchandise.

Hydraulic LiftThe hand powered hydraulic lift is capable of raising the aluminum enclosure to signal that the retail pod is open for business.

Mobility allows the retail pod to be moved from location to location for better brand exposure of a new product. When closed the pod can be lifted and moved via fork lift and be prepared for shipping.

the retail pod was designed to be shipped via standard flat bed truck. carrying over the standard width of a shipping container the pod can be placed on the bed of any truck and fit under standard highway overpasses for convenient shipment methods.

once at the desired site the retail pod can be open and closed via a hand pump hydraulic jack. operated by one person the brand display wall can be lifted in order to provide easy site lines to potential customers.

When open the pod provides a small and temporary physical retail store that leaves very little impact on its site. the retail pod can be placed at high foot traffic events such as concerts, sporting events, seasonal activities, parades, and conventions in order to maintain a strong and diverse customer base.

The project was intended to find innovative ways to use heavy timber construction for mid-rise apartment complexes while dealing with the possibilities of rising sea levels and increased numbers of floods. The competition was held in response to the effects of Hurricane Sandy on the new york Metropolitan area. the team consisted of myself, along with two additional architectural students. our concept involved mobile modular housing, that would allow the residents to evacuate, with their home, in times of disaster. this concept sprang from the knowledge of many people being unwilling to leave their home in times of disaster. if they could bring part of their home with them, however, they may have a greater chance at remaining safe.

in Rome i noticed the growing trend of street art, or graffi ti, being displayed throughout the city. the problem with this, however, is there is no place for graffi ti in Rome. The goal of Museo di arte urbana was to provide a home for street art in Rome. this gallery would allow this new art style to grow and thrive without defacing the eternal city. the project contains gallery space on the fi rst story, both on the interior and exterior, that will allow the students of the school to constantly transform the facade of the building in order to refl ect the current trends in urban street art.

PittsbuRgh Public libRaRy

for this third year design studio project we were asked to design a new branch for the Pittsburgh Public library system. i started with the conceptual idea of a the written word being capable of providing different levels of knowledge and how this could literally be translated to architecture. thus the program was out from social knowledge on the lower levels to areas of higher research on the uppermost levels. i wanted to push the capabilities of circulation as both a transformative architectural element that not only provided access to the different levels, but also acted as social and storage space for the library.During this project i explored various rendering techniques. the images on these pages were created with a combination of Revit and sketchup with extensive postprocessing in Photoshop. The final results evoke a playfulness that encourages exploration, much as reading does.

Design builD

Our fi rst year design studio culminated with a design-build project for the users of the state college community gardens. the group i worked with was asked to build a picnic area and partial shelter adjacent to the gardens. the team was comprised of sixteen fi rst year students and one professor. in the time span of ten weeks our group progressed from conceptual design to built product all while gaining valuable knowledge about construction and the reality of taking a project from drawing board to construction. the project allowed me to step up into a leadership role and manage the construction of the project on site. it forced me to organize the arrival of materials to the site from our building yard at the architecture building as well as the timeline for work being completed on site. overall, i view this project as one of the greatest learning experiences during my education.

beginning in october of 2014 and working through february of 2015 i assisted in the design and publication of llaW of Wall, a book written by the Penn state architecture Department head Mehrdad hadighi. i was primarily responsible for the design and layout of the interior pages of the book as well as various edits to images and photographs of the work by Professor hadighi. i was also in charge of gathering image permissions and organizing the fi nal submission to the publisher.

from this experience my knowledge of adobe inDesign grew tremendously along with my general awareness of graphic styles, layouts, and designs.

The Office of the Physical Plant at Penn state is currently looking to address the water needs of the campus by replacing the existing water tower outside of the stuckeman family building. however, their proposal has an incredible visual impact on the campus that was not addressed through their analysis. under the direction of Kelleann foster, the director of the stuckeman school, a weekend design charrette was organized to propose various solutions to meet both the needs of the campus and address the visual concerns of the current proposal. for two days in november 2014, various professionals in architecture, engineering, and water tower fabrication were brought into state college to work on the design problem at hand. as a core member i was placed on a design team and worked with this team through the brainstorming and design proposal phase. after this phase i helped organize the proposals into a concise presentation that was shown to both Dean Korner and the Provost of Penn state. through our efforts, the current proposal by oPP is being reconsidered as the underground water tank option is being further researched.
