What is time (for a child)?

Telling time is fundamentally a division problem - you are dividing up chunks of time and assigning a label to it.

It is also an abstract concept that the child is not taught, but is expected to understand once they are given the tools for the telling of time.

Time is imposed upon you by grown-ups.
