Dear distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,I want to welcome you to the Annual ANPASouthern California Chapter end of the yearGala. You are all in for a treat tonight.

The Association of Nigerian Physicians in theAmericas (ANPA) was founded in Los Angeles in1995. The Association has since grown in num-bers and deeds. It was founded to provide aplatform for Nigerian healthcare professionalspracticing in the Americas to interact and sharescientific ideas that will benefit our communi-ties here and in Nigeria.

ANPA has since been formed engaged in scien-tific presentations yearly in its national conven-tions. These presentations have focused on themedical conditions that affect our communitiesboth here and in Nigeria. The 20th annual con-vention will take place in 2014 here in DisneyLand. You will all be invited to our 20th year an-niversary celebration.

In 2008 the association took its convention toNigeria for the first time. This enabled ANPA tofoster a symbiotic relationship with similar or-ganizations in Nigeria and the UK, the Nigerianmedical association (NMA) and the medical as-sociations of Nigerians across Great Britain(MANSAG). ANPA has continued to work withthese organizations to foster a healthier Nigeriain a healthier world. These efforts have of coursemet some challenges.

ANPA initiated medical missions to Nigeriashortly after it was founded. Many Nigerian

Community organizations have since engagedin medical missions to Nigeria. In 2011/2012,ANPA under the sponsorship of USAID ANPAspearheaded the review of medical college cur-riculum in Nigerian medical schools. We willtonight roll out our newest program, medicaland Allied health mentorship program. We cer-tainly want to encourage our kids to take up ca-reers in Medicine and Allied health. This willcertainly reduce the shortage of these disci-plines in our community and beyond.

We promise you all a fun time tonight. There willbe lots of entertainment.Youwill laugh until youcannot anymore.Youwill dance until your danc-ing shoes fall off or your heels start hurting. Soplease sit back, relax, put on your dancing shoesand have the time of your life.

Our Vision and Mission is achieved through thefollowing activities:

• The Annual ANPA Conventions -We ad-dress current issues of healthcare in Africa,such as HIV, women’s health, child health, envi-ronmental health, health care financing inAfrica, mental health, capacity building, educa-tion and training of physicians and otherhealth workers.• Our Medical Missions offer us the op-portunity to provide free healthcare to themedically indigent, in rural parts of Nigeria,Africa, the Caribbean, and other needy regionsof the world.We get firsthand experience ofthe issues and the nature of health problems ofthe local communities. It enables us to ex-change views, share experience and partici-pate in collaborative care with our localcounterparts. We are able to educate localhealth institutions, governments, non-govern-mental organizations (NGOs), and other stake-holders on the best practices for improving thehealth of individuals and populations.• Capacity building – Through our train-ing initiatives, advisory roles, and active en-


gagement with health workers and institutions,we help to develop critical skills and infrastruc-ture needed to run an effective health service inNigeria and other countries in Africa and theCaribbean.• Internet Communication - ANPA was thefirst organization to provide internet connectionto a number of major Nigerian Universities. Wehave also webcast our conventions and hope tofacilitate internet links between African institu-tions and their U.S. counterparts.• Through this web site and our other onlineresources, such as the e-group, message forum,and blog, we engage in lively on-going discus-sions on current healthcare issues that are of in-terest to our community.• Directory -We publish a directory andmaintain a database of Nigerian physicians in theUS, Canada and the Caribbean with the specialtyand location of their practices. Thus we are able toreach Nigerian physicians in general and whennecessary, can call on the appropriate expertise ofour members.• Networking -With over 4,000 Nigerianborn or trained physicians in the U.S., Canada andthe Caribbean, ANPA's Annual Conventions andlocal chapter activities provide forums to shareour experiences and pool our expertise for ahealthier Nigeria in a healthier world.• Policy Advocacy -We meet with African

leaders and officials in charge of Health Care, suchas the President of Nigeria, the Minister of Healthand other senior government officials to offer pol-icy recommendation to the Government on is-sues such as HIV, medical education and healthcare financing.

Other Activities• We participate in international forums andmeetings such as National Summit on Africa andGrantmaker Conference, to educate participantssuch as U.S. policymakers, US businesses and otherorganizations on the health system in Nigeria andthe healthcare needs of Nigerians and Africans.• We collaborate with well-meaning groupsand organizations providing specialized medicalcare in Nigeria, including other Nigerian born ortrained physicians in Europe, Middle East andAfrican countries outside Nigeria.• We participate in local health fairs in theU.S., Canada and the Americas providing educa-tion, information and health care to all.• Collaborate with other African PhysicianCommunities to form regional associations.• Extend ourMedical Mission to all of Sub-Sa-haran Africa and the Caribbean• Foster research and collaboration betweenAfrican researchers and their counterparts in theU.S., Canada and theWest.

Adanna Duru is a 17-year-old singer-songwriter, musician, dancer, and model from Southern California.She was featured on Season 3 of NBC's "The Voice" and made it onto Adam Levine's team with Mary J.

Adanna recorded a song with NBC Universal Records called "Edge of Glory" that she sang on the show,now on iTunes. She is also recording her debut album and just recently released a music video of an origi-nal song which she wrote, and directed and choreographed the video by herself; it became a success, hit-
