2. History & Reflections

Pride in your TownIn 1874 Benjamin Dunkerley arrived in Tasmania from England to start a hat making business in Hobart. As well as being a hat maker he had the ability to invent machinery and soon after his arrival he developed a mechanical method of removing the hair tip from the rabbit fur so only the under fur could be used in his felts for hats. In the early 1900’s he moved his business to a suburb of Sydney and built a small hat making factory.

In 1904 Stephen Keir, with hat making experience came from England and joined Dunkerley’s business. In 1905 Keir married Ada Dunkerley, the daughter of Benjamin Dunkerley while the business in 1911 had a mere nineteen employees. It was in 1912 that the famous brand name “AKUBRA “ came into use and a bigger factory was needed for the supply of the slouch hats worn during World War I. Dunkerley died in 1925 and ownership of the business transferred to Stephen Keir (I)..

From that time forward the sons in the Keir families have taken over the business when the fathers had passed on. It changed managers in 1952 with Stephen Keir (II) becoming manager, then in 1980 Stephen Dixon Keir( III) O.A.M. took over the reigns and then Stephen Maitland Keir (IV) takes over in 2007. Stephen Maitland Keir (IV) has seven children so the name “AKUBRA” and the Keir family could be connected for the next 105 years as it has been to the present time. The Akubra hat factory is now based in Kempsey in NSW having relocated from Sydney in 1974. It truly is a wonderful Australian icon.

Remember some editions back we covered sugar cane. The second plant that has changed the world is the BAMBOO. Aside from rice no other plant has played such an important role in the history of China and the East as bamboo. Its uses are edible, medicinal, commercial, and practical. Bamboo has been used for everything from the first world’s wheelbarrow to airplane models, but bamboo was also responsible for creating some of the most distinctive art on the planet. Bamboo produced some of the most striking paintings that influenced the famous Impressionist, Claude Monet (1840 – 1926). Official records in ancient China were inscribed on strips of bamboo before the invention of silk books. Bamboo has been used for centuries to make wind instruments such as the pan pipes of an organ. It is so versatile it has been used for fishing nets, paper and pens, wine cups chopsticks and tobacco pipes just to name a few.

Gentlemen should be as upright as the bamboo and equally as strong, and just as the bamboo culm is hollow so should the perfect gentleman keep his mind open and never entertain prejudice or secret thoughts. These words were written in about 772. Bamboo is still a remarkable item in today’s world.

Farewell with good wishes.CLARICE PIGRAM

Recently, we sadly had to farewell Mrs Clarice Pigram, a very long time resident of Mount Morgan. Clarice has had to move to Brisbane for medical reasons and will reside with her caring family.

Clarice has always been interested in arts and crafts and was one of the many who made many articles for our boys who were serving overseas during war years.

She was a stalwart member of the Arts and Crafts group at the Welfare building since its inception in the late 1980’s and was always willing to share her knowledge and many talents with others.

Many of her articles appeared in the Mount Morgan Show. Clarice will be greatly missed by the “Care and Share” group which she loved to attend on Thursday mornings.

Our very best wishes go to Clarice for a speedy recovery to good health and a very happy life in Brisbane with your family.

You and your exceptional talents will be missed by many folk in Mount Morgan.

ASK US HOW

A couple of days ago a lady asked me how this grinder worked; she said for the handle to wind it seems to be in the wrong place. I agreed with her, but then told her I think there is one or two parts missing, this is what I pieced together.

I started to research the Massey name several years ago, when I bought a bicycle that has the name Massey forged in the chain ring. This bike was probably made in the 1930s, by Speedwell; I don’t know how it got a Massey chain ring. In 1891 a Canadian company called Massey Manufacturing merged with A Harris and Sons to become Massey Harris Ltd; they made threshing machines, tractors as well as bicycles.

In 1953 they merged with the Ferguson Company and added Ferguson to the name. In 1958 they became Massey Ferguson.

This grinder was made in a factory in America; there is a brass plaque on it saying “Massey – Harris Grinder Made in U. S. A.”

There were several versions, each with small differences. There were different attachments that fitted onto the back to hold different tools that needed sharpening.

I believe it was made for general purpose work.

One thing that it was used for was to sharpen a sickle; the sickle would sit in a fitting on the back. The left side grinding wheel would have been changed to a grinding ball, about the size of a cricket ball.

I guess this would be so that different angles could be used on the blade, as well as sharpening the curve better.

4. Golden Mount FestivalThe Golden Mount Festival Wine and Cheese night was a great night with everyone attending enjoying the wide range of platters, chocolate fondue and much more. There were two highlights of the evening - the first was the Fashion Parade by the Mount Morgan State High School. If you wish to purchase a book, please contact [email protected]. Pictured above right with Tony Hope is Bette Broom.

On Sunday night the Golden Mount Festival held its free family movie and fireworks spectacular.

On Monday, the members convened to the Mount Morgan Golf Club where the Golden Mount Festival Association sponsored Ambrose Tournament was won by Melissa Lee and Simon Moss.

President, Eve-lyn Rogers said it was a great weekend and a fitting way to celebrate 40 years.

“Throughout the weekend the Golden Mount Festival Association provides community members with a range of free entertainment as well as opportunities to take home prizes.

“During the last three years the association has developed its business and marketing plan, a social media plan, completely rebranded the Festival with new logo and banners as well as some merchandise to maintain a revenue stream for the next couple of years,” Golden Mount Festival Association President said.

“There have been many changes within the organisation to set it up for sustainability; it’s now up to future committees and members to ensure that the momentum which has been gradually building for the past three years continues.

“In 2017, the Association applied for and was successful in receiving sponsorship from Tourism Events Queensland to develop an Independent Event Report which will put the association in a good place to receive additional funding from Tourism Events Queensland and other funding organisations should it meet the required criteria,” Miss Rogers said.

“2018 will provide plenty of opportunities for the Association to form cohesive partnerships – especially with the 2018 Commonwealth Games being held at the start of April, then the Golden Mount Festival and then BEEF2018; there are only exciting times ahead,” she said.

Anita and Allan Biggs certainly had no thoughts of buying a cafe in Mount Morgan when they accompanied their brother into the White Elephant Burger Bar in Morgan Street approximately five weeks ago. In fact they were “looking for a pub” according to Allan.

The Atherton Tablelands was where the couple hailed from until twelve years ago, when they moved to Central Queensland and have lived in Mount Morgan two and a half years.

“We chose to make Mount Morgan our home as it’s so similar to our home town and I’m a country girl at heart”, Anita said.

Previous to settling in Mount Morgan ,Anita and Allan moved around quite frequently due to Allan’s job within the Mining Industry and the couple also owned twenty-five acres of property at Gin Gin.

When asked how the trade over the May Day long week-end had been Anita said, “Really good, we were very happy with it. Although it was a long day on the Saturday as we were working from 5.30am to 8pm and feeling fairly exhausted at the end of it”.

The ‘Rainbow Cafe’, as it is once again called, is open from 10am-7.30pm, Tuesday -Sunday and closed Monday. They also have plans for a new menu board and some nostalagia on the walls after speaking to Ruth Marendy, the daughter of Paul & Christine Marendy, who locals may remember owned the cafe for many years.

The Rainbow Cafe can be found at 65 Morgan Street. Phone orders welcome 07 49 381 808

WildlifeMattersBy Trish Mathers - Phone 04005 91504

Time and time again wildlife carers receive animals that have been left too long before they are handed in. We are trained and know exactly what to do when a sick, injured or orphaned native animal comes into our care. We have on hand the medications and food requirements for these animals.

We know what temperatures to keep them at, how to treat them for stress (and believe me, they will be stressed!), how to treat any wounds they have, etc. Native animals, particularly kangaroos and wallabies, suffer from Myopathy.

This is usually known as stress or capture myopathy, and results from

an animal being put in a situation where they don’t have the option to flee from danger. The flight response causes metabolic changes in their body, such as a huge rush of adrenalin.

These changes convert to myopathy when they are unable to flee, and can result in muscles in the body virtually collapsing. This means the animal loses normal functions, and can affect them in many ways, often causing death.

This can occur anytime up to a few months after capture. Wildlife carers are trained to minimise the stress on the animals, to give them the best

chance of recovery. The longer an animal remains in your care, and not in professional care, the less its chance of survival. This is one of the reasons we advise to handle any animal, even birds, as little as possible.

There is also the chance of internal injuries which handling will make much worse. If you find a sick injured or orphaned native animal, please keep it warm, secure and quiet, and phone a vet or wildlife carer as soon as possible.

A really really big thanks to Mt Morgan Arts & Crafts Care & Share group for their generous donation toward veterinary costs. This will be a great help to us and the animals.

Tuesday 9th May was a busy morning for executives from The Mount Morgan Cutter Social Club in association with the Grand Hotel, as President Judith Crane and Secretary Kathy Griffiths visited the Mount Morgan State High School at 10am, followed by the Mount Morgan Central State School at 11am.

The ladies were on a mission to present both Breakfast Club Coordinators a cheque for $100 each to enable them to continue to provide students with a well balanced boost to their day ahead.

Nutritionists confirm that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There are varied reasons why students come to school without breakfast, however both schools are striving to ensure their students start their day with toast and juice at the Primary School while cereal, toast and spreads are available at the High School.

On the last day of each term the High School also offers bacon and egg rolls for the students. “It’s not just about the meal”, Donna Deasy said. “Students like to have a chat or just say hi, however we are flat chat until the bell goes.”

Principal Trevor Rickertt confirmed, “The Breakfast Club benefits students’ in boosting their concentration and energy levels, throughout the day”.

School Brekky Clubs receive more local support from Social Club President Jutith Crane, Coordinator Donna Deasy, Principal Trevor Rickkert and Secretary Kathy Griffiths at Mt Morgan High.

Secretary Kathy Griffiths, Coordinator Sandra Ireland, President Judith Crane and Principal Brad Carlson at Mt Morgan Primary.

THE WAR ON EVERYONEExtremely politically incorrect; violent, nasty, dark and outrageously funny, THE WAR ON EVERYONE may be the best ‘ bad cop’ comedy ever.

We laughed hilariously at stuff we really shouldn’t be chuckling about... But it’s healthy to poke P.C. in the eye now and then. There’s way too much of that anyway...

THE WAR ON EVERYONE follows corrupt cops Terry Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard, TARZAN) and Bob Bolano (Michael Pena, COLLATERAL BEAUTY) as they break the law for a living in New Mexico, USA.

Terry is an alcoholic who just loves Glen Campbell and Bob is a deep-

-thinking closet intellectual -come-philosopher who is devoted to his wife and kids.

The boys have an act, a routine, a well-oiled and practiced tag-team method of skimming the cash from the crims. But when Bob and Terry try to shakedown strip-club manager Birdwell, our crooked cops bump heads and lock horns with underworld Kingpin, James Mangan (Theo James).

Things suddenly get very, very personal, and Bob and Terry realize it’s not just about money anymore. It’s time for them to stand up!

Our unlikely heroes... anti-heroes?... Whatever... put everything on the line for the sake of an innocent child.

Shooting their way to rough justice could turn out to be their redemption... If they can get away with it.

Also featuring old favourite Paul Reiser WAR ON EVERONE is written and directed by the same guy who wrote THE GUARD, & CAVALRY, John Michael McDonough. It’s rated MA15+ for “strong coarse language, drug use and sex”, and runs for one hour and forty minutes.

Kickin’ behinds and getting away with it (in AFL-speak). THE WAR ON EVERYONE... Loved it!

The Mount Morgan Freemasons are in the process of painting the interior of the heritage-listed Mount Morgan Masonic Temple. They were professionally advised on a colour scheme of pale stone and jade blue, popular colours when the Masonic Temple was built just after Federation.

The foyer has already been painted (pictured). The first floor is next on the list. The original staircase from the entrance to the first floor will soon be painted in a rich dark brown.

Adorning the freshly painted foyer are framed portraits of 1888 foundation members of the Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge, many of whom were prominent Mount Morgan citizens. Portraits of the first general manager of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited, Wesley Hall (1839-1901), and renowned local photographer, J.H. Lundager (1853-1930), are included.

A portrait of foundation lodge member and engineer at the Mount Morgan mine, Charles Kolling (1858-1926), is also present. His widow donated funds to establish a medical laboratory in Sydney in the 1930s, now known as the Kolling Institute, the oldest medical research institute in New South Wales.

The portrait collection is the result of a combined effort between the Mount Morgan Freemasons and two descendants of early Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge members.

Gympie resident, Jeanette Roughley, donated two portraits of her great-grandfather, Thomas Glen Cornes (1842-1903). He was a foundation member of the Mount Morgan Freemasons and the building supervisor of the Mount Morgan Masonic Temple in 1903.

Article supplied by Catherine McIntosh

Sydneysider, Catherine McIntosh (pictured below with Mount Morgan Freemasons), is the great-granddaughter of Thomas Upsell Stubbs (1868-1954), who affiliated with the Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge in 1918. He was a member of the Mount Morgan Masonic Orchestra. A 1919 Stubbs portrait of the orchestra is in the collection.

Some of the older portraits were found in a cupboard in the Masonic Temple by Mount Morgan Freemason, Barry Batchelor. They are rare J.H. Lundager photographs from the 1880s, probably taken in his studio on Jubilee Hill, which was also used as the venue for the first meetings of the Mount Morgan Freemasons. The portraits were scanned, digitally restored and labelled by Catherine.

“When you walk through the grand entrance of the Masonic Temple, you feel as if you have stepped back in time. The historical portraits, coupled with the new Federation colour scheme, look impressive. The foyer’s new look enhances the old-world charm of this iconic building”, Catherine said.

A Past Master of the Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge, Dr Ray Boyle, added:“When one now enters the foyer of the one hundred and fourteen year old Mount Morgan Masonic Centre, one is struck by the wonderful restoration work that has been performed by the Brethren.”

Catherine has selected the subjects of the portraits carefully. Her selections reflect a wide ranging glimpse of these Brethren, and indeed, connect these men not only with Freemasonry, but with their influence on the civic life of the town and on the success of the famous Mount Morgan gold mine.

Freemasonry has been an important part in the life of Mount Morgan for almost one hundred and thirty years, and this display will remind visitors to the Centre of that fact. Many thanks to Catherine for her work.”
