ANNUAL REPORT 2013/2014 Messages from Leadership Team Arnnon Geshuri - Chair of Board of Trustees The 2013/2014 school year was one of great opportunity. Yavneh students experienced stellar academics and celebrated traditional milestones. Maintaining our core values for more than 30 years, we are proud to say that the enriched academic learning environment and our culture of social justice and personal development has rewarded our students, both present and past. Looking to the future, the Board of Trustees worked closely with the parents, students, staff and faculty, and community to define the future and strongly invest in the school. We are honored to have an exceptional team of accomplished leaders who bring inspiration, energy, and values to Yavneh. Zvi Weiss joined as our new Head of School, Dr. Diana Wilmot joined as our new Chief Academics Officer and Principal, and Rabbi Laurie Hahn Tapper returned as our Rabbi and Head of Jewish Studies. This team will lead excellence in academics and Jewish learning and strengthen our connections to everyone in our community and beyond. Yavneh is an outstanding school for our students and together we will continue to build it for future generations. Thank you for your support, involvement, and ongoing partnership. Zvi Weiss - Head of School Similar to the root of the name Yavneh, which means to build, we are continually focusing on building our school - with greater opportunities for students in the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, with more project-based learning and innovation labs that allow our students to be the builders of their own educational experiences - in a supportive learning environment infused with Jewish values; with new ways for parents to gain a greater understanding of their children's learning; with more meaningful ways to engage our board of directors and the greater Silicon Valley community. As I begin my journey as Yavneh's new leader, I feel privileged to be able to partner with such a strong and committed community in building our future together. Dr. Diana Wimot - Chief Academic Officer/Principal Yavneh provides a rich, educational experience for students, grounded in a foundation of academic skills and enhanced by a constant drive to develop critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity. We are committed to a coherent curriculum model, designed around a developmental approach to learning that allows for flexible grouping of students based on their own potential and individual growth. We design instructional opportunities for students that allow for co-teaching and collaboration to happen amongst our faculty. This keeps our student-teacher ratio low and provides more touch points for the students to learn.

ANNUAL  REPORT  2013/2014

Messages from Leadership Team

Arnnon Geshuri - Chair of Board of Trustees The 2013/2014 school year was one of great opportunity.

By creating these educational opportunities for students, we are simultaneously offering professional learning opportunities for our faculty as they can observe each other teach, mentor one another, and generate a synergy to create a community of educators who focus on students and improve in their practice each day. Yavneh is a special place to learn. We have the freedom in this independent school environment to challenge ourselves and our students, to tailor the educational experience, and to empower every child to reach his or her fullest intellectual, social and creative potential.

Rabbi Laurie Hahn Tapper - Rabbi and Head of Jewish Studies  Yavneh Day School is a living laboratory for Jewish Life. Everyday students have the opportunity to bring the stories, lessons and values of our tradition to life and apply them to 21st century situations. At Yavneh, the Torah isn’t a book that sits on a shelf, it is brought to life in how the children treat each other on the playground, ask inquisitive questions in class and help those in in the broader community. Students have the opportunity to engage and experience the breadth, depth and vibrancy of Jewish life in modern America and are empowered to make their own choices as they shape their Jewish identity. Living Jewish values every day takes many forms at Yavneh. Through opportunities like leading their peers and parents in prayer, or being a teacher and buddy to a younger student, or presenting their thoughts on a Jewish holiday or text to the entire school, Yavneh students develop confidence and public speaking skills that last a lifetime. At Yavneh, Jewish values are brought to life and the children learn to make informed Jewish choices for their future.
